2872621, Where does King Geedorah rank among DOOM's albums?
Posted by Funkymusic, Wed Feb-26-14 01:35 PM
this is also an appreciation post.
2872624, Third in my rankings
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Wed Feb-26-14 01:41 PM
I only dig five of his projects though.
2872861, That's still a pretty good amount
Posted by Adwhizz, Thu Feb-27-14 02:56 PM
to say an artist ONLY has 5 projects that you like.
2872625, Somewhere in the middle, I guess
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Feb-26-14 01:45 PM
It's not as good as Doomsday, Madvillainy, MM...Food, or Viktor Vaughn. But I still think it's good. It probably suffered a bit, because it was the first album that he released that featured beats from Special Herbs Vol. 1 & 2. It also featured what felt like too many cuts where a) He only rhymed on short verse, b) Other guys rapped, c) No one rapped, and it was an extended "cut and Paste" track.

But, back to the appreciation part of the post, "Fazers" and "The Fine Print" are still two of my favorite DOOM tracks ever. "Anti-Matter" is good little back-and-forth jam. The only "solo" song with a rapper I didn't feel was "I Wonder"; "Crazy World," "Fast Lane," and "Lockjaw" were all ill (Next Levels was okay, but not mind-blowing). And while "Monster Zero" went on way too long, the title track worked well as a cut and paste track.

Only counting solos, for me it's:

1. Operation Doomsday
2. Vaudeville Villain
3. MM..Food
4. King Geedorah
5. Born Like This

I would put MM..Food higher but I've always thought it has like 4-5 too many skits that make the middle of the album feel like such a drag to me. Definitely has my favorite overall DOOM songs.

Vaudeville Villain is #2 cause he was spittin on that one.
2872637, Why don't you consider Madvillainy a solo?
Posted by quikfit, Wed Feb-26-14 02:10 PM
It's only a "group" because Madlib does the beats.
I think it should be still considered a "solo", as DOOM is the primary MC. Sure it's got features, but so do the others.
Just wondering the logic on that?
2872673, Good point!

I wanna say because it's so distinct from his other joints and because Madlib crafted that album (with DOOM) so to me it feels like a duo record rather than a DOOM album produced by Madlib. Does that make sense?

I guess by the same logic Dangerdoom is a solo too. It's sound reasoning but there's just a different vibe there (despite DOOM being the main MC) that separates from what I'd call his solo joints. Although I admit I'm not a big fan of that record.
2872633, Zev Luv X interview from Source mag, 1994
Posted by dustin, Wed Feb-26-14 02:05 PM
Came across this a few weeks ago. It's after Subroc's death and you can kinda tell Doom was a bit depressed/jaded at the time. A few parts almost seem like foreshadowing.

2872645, dope!

2873013, This is nuts. I read some of the other interviews too...
Posted by Brew, Fri Feb-28-14 10:05 AM
on that site. Dood is even weirder than I thought. Made some great music tho.

Is he still alive?
2873050, the one from 99 was great and funny
Posted by A Love Supreme, Fri Feb-28-14 02:42 PM
why would you think he is dead?
2872636, I've never heard it
Posted by quikfit, Wed Feb-26-14 02:07 PM
I'm a DOOM fan, but I've never listened to this album.
I've only ever seen it for sale once, used on wax, but it was $45 so wasn't going for it.
Never think to D/L it. This is a reminder that I should check it out.
2872830, me too. glad i'm not the only one!

Behind Madvillainy, Operation Doomsday & Mm..Food. TMTYL has some vintage Doom production on it.
2872717, RE: it's dope. that cut with mr fantastik is ill

i always wondered who that guy is and why he didn't do more stuff. dude is sick with it.

Mr Fantastik is one of the biggest mysteries in hiphop for me... lol

Every time I heard "rapp snitches knishes" I google for him and only find forum threads asking what happened to him beyond those 2 DOOM features.

Same here. Dude was dope as hell. Has anybody ever asked DOOM during an interview?
2872719, remember when it came out how nuts the internet went

2872834, Next Levels man Next Levels
Posted by Geah, Thu Feb-27-14 01:18 PM
2872835, Only really liked Lil Sci's/John Robinson's verse on that
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Feb-27-14 01:24 PM
The beat was smooth as hell, but two out of the three didn't do justice to it.
2873051, for me I can't never get over Gigan's voice on Crazy World
Posted by Nodima, Fri Feb-28-14 02:46 PM
to me, that voice is what defines that album, even over the sci-fi samples and lo-fi whizz bang electronics.

Right behind Operation Doomsday.

That shit was a space opera classic.
2872937, 3rd for me behind Madvillainy and DOOMSDAY
Posted by Ishwip, Thu Feb-27-14 09:44 PM
Fazers could be my favorite DOOM song ever.

And Fast Lane made me pull over in my car on first listen.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Came across that article from '12. Written by the dude who directed ?/Dead Bent videos, pretty funny read. Has one of the more interesting unmasked DOOM pics I've seen.
