2868359, beyonce's 'blow' (written by pharrell) is rick james 'glow'

I am so mad & in my feelings right now...please don't let me find out pharrell is out here hacking it up :(
2868361, ??? did you just hear the whole album?
Posted by astralblak, Sat Feb-01-14 09:04 PM
it's actually my second favorite cut on the album

if it is a bite Pharrell and Timbo are equally responsible since they both produced it
2868363, They sound way different
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sat Feb-01-14 10:29 PM
2868385, no they do jot the drums are extremely similar
Posted by fire, Sun Feb-02-14 11:11 AM
Glow + cold blooded = blow. Listen again it's both those songs
2868417, I heard Cold Blooded more so, but the drums aren't hittin as hard
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Feb-02-14 03:40 PM
2868365, The drums maybe?
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Sat Feb-01-14 10:50 PM
Outside of that...
2868386, the drums are glow & cold blooded
Posted by fire, Sun Feb-02-14 11:11 AM
2868391, after listening to all three songs again, i can kinda sorta hear it.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Sun Feb-02-14 12:06 PM
but it's not on the level of "slave for u" and "nasty girl"
or "blurred lines" and "got to give it up"

i never quite understood ppl's problem with this.
genius artists steal ideas from other people.
i mean if we start copyrighting drum sounds, grooves,
chord progressions, and vibes of songs... there's no more art left period.

2868488, pharrell, in particular, has been doing this for years.
Posted by come on people, Mon Feb-03-14 11:03 AM
from "give it 2 me (just wanna love u)" to "beautiful" to that song with justin, snoop, and charlie wilson...it's a key part of what he does. i dunno why folks are so shocked now.

and yea...hearing "glow" right now i can understand what fire is saying. i don't think it's as close with this one. there's more syncopation on "blow" and, in all honesty, "blow" is actually funkier.
2868366, I thought Timbo made that joint. Oh well. Sample whoever.
Posted by Yadgyu, Sat Feb-01-14 10:58 PM
All of that intellectual property shit is dead.
2868371, they both did it, i think.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Sun Feb-02-14 02:22 AM
my guess is that pharell did the first part (sounds like
it could be a kelis song) and timbo did the cherry change up.
2868418, Timbaland made the switch up/second half when she talks about
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Feb-02-14 03:40 PM
"Turn that cherry out"
2868415, naw.

i agree that both parts of 'Blow' sound like they include nods to Rick James' style, i disagree that either song includes a jack or interpolation of any particular Rick James song. there's nothing to be upset about, IMO. i see the song as Yonce honoring Rick's music. and as you know, all great artists borrow from and honor artists that inspired them. to me that's all this is.
2868520, this post is not about beyonce it's about pharrell
Posted by fire, Mon Feb-03-14 02:09 PM
Who we laud as an innovator.....the blurred libes controversy & other songs...side eye for pharrell
2868523, it's not a sample, or an interpolation, or a cover.

>Who we laud as an innovator.....the blurred libes controversy

everybody that knows about music
knows he copies grooves.

but where would it end?

do we chastise MJ for taking his "whoo!" from stevie?
or swiping the groove for billie jean from hall and oats?
or various dance shillouettes from bob fosse?
or the moonwalk and the robot from b-boys?

every innovator jacks shit.
every. single. one.

all the great artists are part of a continuum,
all the legends are standing on the shoulders of giants.
most of them would tell you that themselves.
2868541, Nah, ever single artist in every single genre of art does this.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Feb-03-14 03:49 PM
You draw on your reservoir of art you been expose to and you try to repurpose it into something new.

Bad art is very derivative and doesn't build on the older work.

Music is better off having all three of these songs in the world.

2868594, I didn't realize that Wanna love you girl & Hollaback girl = Housequake

2868697, Nelly's "hot in here" is "bustin loose"
Posted by naame, Tue Feb-04-14 11:05 AM
kendrick lamar "good kid" is "we live in brooklyn"
2868702, Exactly. The Yessirs highlighted all the interpolations/inspirations...
Posted by self_ish, Tue Feb-04-14 11:29 AM
For the beats on In My Mind. Slave for You is clearly Prince inspired, Let's Get Blown is Slave inspired. That new song that the guy from Franz Ferdinand was fussing about is James Brown inspired. This is what Pharrell does. I thought it was just seen as a standard operating procedure for him at this point.
