2858107, Come school me on Perri "Pebbles" Reid.
Posted by gritty, Mon Nov-25-13 03:32 PM
Back in the day was who was she on the level of? Like in the last 10 to 15 years, what female artist that's been around was she the equivalent too? I'm real interested in knowing more about her time as an artist and her story after the whole TLC story and all. Of course I've grown up listening to records by her years by way of the radio and whatever my pops had playing on the radio but what were her albums like? Was she really big as an artist? Did she hit her apex and if not is she like an Unsung type artist?

I was born the year she first made her mark as an artist so forgive me for not knowing, lol.

Class in session!
2858108, she was on that Christina Millian level.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Nov-25-13 03:38 PM
i was gonna say Keyshia Cole but i think Keyshia has more hits than Pebbz had.
2858305, Cristina Milian has had one song that could be called a 'hit'
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Nov-26-13 02:50 PM
Pebbles had 6 or 7... even if they were "hood hits." I'm not gonna look up actual chart positions or sales figures, but

1. Mercedes Boy
2. Girlfriend
3. Backyard
4. Giving You the Benefit
5. Love Makes Things Happen
6. Always

am I forgetting any?

She was kinduva big deal for a quick minute there...
2858462, yup.

thanks for including it b/c the ppl need to know.

Millian is more like Robyn S level if you going there.

you turkeys don't impress me much peebles was the pre cursor faith evans
2858518, I Agree. Pebbles was Way More Successful Than Christina Milian
Posted by J-Elijah, Wed Nov-27-13 01:40 PM
Pebbles and Christina Milian are both gorgeous, but Christina hasn't
had any #1 hits yet, and Pebbles had 4 #1 songs. Plus, Pebbles has written songs for other artists too.
2858541, Who knew the Pebbles Fan Club had so many members posting here??
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Nov-27-13 03:15 PM
I tend to exaggerate Christina's success. I figure she must have had a hit or 2 though I don't know them or even their names. Bc her name keeps popping up and she was even on DWTS. Lol. But I have Google and I have used it and found that Christina doesn't have any hits, really. I agree that Pebbz had a few more. Still, her popularity was brief and I don't agree that she was on Faith's level. Faith crossed over in a way Pebbz never did. Sure she was featured on her biggest hits but that's a level of success Pebbz never had. But I agree Pebbz was bigger than Christina.
2858554, I think Ashanti might be a better parallel. nm
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Wed Nov-27-13 03:58 PM
2858555, I bet you do.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Nov-27-13 04:00 PM

Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Nov-27-13 07:21 PM
though Charli Baltimore got as much of that, thats another day and story.

Ashanti and Ja RUle were on that Grease tip which while cute was no Peebles and Babyface. Whip Appeal alone>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>all them songs on Murda inc
2858588, turkey you stay tripping, Faith was a Bad Boys Production
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Nov-27-13 07:16 PM
that is the link alone turkey. Puffy married her off to Bigggie.

Faith wrote for Mary J Bliege early on.

faith though was always a 2nd/3rd tier act.

you gonna act like Faith had a song on her own as big as whip appeal? turkey Please.

or brought an act as big to a label like TLC? TUrkey Double Please!!

Peebles had a run that was tougher for black acts to cross over believe that one turkey.

Faith is the first lady of Bad Boy like Peebles was the first lady of Laface except Pebbles had a piece of the action.
2858627, I Disagree. Pebbles Had a Good Run as a Singer & Writer
Posted by J-Elijah, Thu Nov-28-13 01:02 AM
How many singers can say they had four #1 songs? Plus, Pebbles wrote songs for other artists like Con Funk Shun and Babyface. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
2858630, that turkey don't know much, he just likes to argue against me
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Nov-28-13 01:29 AM
we done put that turkey in check, broke the breaks off that Gobble head turkey. Peebles had a decent little run.

a lot.
2858667, Despite the TLC issue, Pebbles Achieved Success as a Solo Artist
Posted by J-Elijah, Thu Nov-28-13 12:58 PM
I would consider a singer successful to have achieved one #1 song in their career. Most singers wish they could get just one #1 song. Pebbles had several #1's. She was a success. There is no question that she was a successful solo artist. The TLC issue tainted her career and reputation but that does not take away from the fact of what she achieved as a singer and writer for many artists behind the scenes. She also helped La Reid and Babyface mold their artists at their peak of LAFace Records.

2858113, Pebbles was one of the start of R&B pop cross-over
Posted by c71, Mon Nov-25-13 04:06 PM
that late-80's thing that people say Luther never really achieved.

Pebbles first hit "Girlfriend" was very big with the suburban white kids I was around in the late 80's (I moved to the suburbs in my 11th grade school year).

Then follow up hits like "Mercedes boy" and "take your time" were very big with R&b radio (not too sure how much "Girlfriend" was big with R&B radio, but pop audiences loved "Girlfriend")

Pebbles was big with the Babyface LA Reid scene. Pebbles was the person who gave Babyface the idea for the song "Whip appeal" because Pebbles brought up the phrase: "she got him whipped" while she was in the studio with Babyface talking about some guy infatuated with some lady.

Pebbles was interviewed on Arsenio show a couple of times late 80's early 90's. Then her 2nd album was released and it had some hits like "backyard", "giving you the benefit" and "always" that were big with R&B radio and it seemed like she made a good sophmore album, not a fall-off situation.

Then..........Pebbles married LA Reid, and......seemed like....that wasn't good for her career.

Not even sure she did a 3rd album.

Yet, she was working with TLC but now it is known she and LA weren't too "together" while she was getting TLC off the ground (I say this because LA supposedly didn't know how "bad" Pebbles contracts with TLC were around then) so.........

Between working with TLC and marrying LA Reid that seemed to be it for Pebbles musical career.

She is now a preacher.
2858176, sits and bookmarks for Maxxxs post ....
Posted by QBoogie, Mon Nov-25-13 10:39 PM
... not only will it be one for the books, it will be a good schooling lesson. Especially if he brings up any of the TLC debacle the rags been talking about.
2858185, she was the Eli Manning of Music
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Mon Nov-25-13 11:36 PM
can't compare nobody out now to peebles because she had the right connections and had enough cross over without crossing over.

yeah she is unsung because she came along during a time that the door was opened by a Janet Jackson, a Jody watley which allowed a Peebles to cross over.

yeah the facts

she had some big hits and she took "girlfriend" from vanessa Williams and in some ways they mirrored one another as artists though Williams got more talent overall IMO.

what some folks don't know is that peebles was on the ground with La and babyface before they really took off.

gotta remember girlfriend hit right around the time the deeles two occasions and the other stuff Laface had out at the time.

Peebles got with LA Reid and her ex hand a price tag on LA's head and him and face hauled booty to the ATL in fear.

Peebles had some Suge Knight in his guts and she pimped TLC and got that get back.

Peebles was a low 2nd tier high 3rd tier act at best, however assocation made her seem more of a threat.

she did have a 3rd album however it went wood.

and no money was on her once TLC took off and she broke up with LA.

yeah she co write "Whip Appeal" for Babyface and they wanted to give it to Prince who turned it down.

anyway that song hit big time and again Peebles being in the right place at the right time.

Love makes things happen hit as a duet with her and Face and again timing and selling them off as duet couple.

rewind for a minute her ex paid out of pocket every Producer and writer on her debut album.

he had crazy cake and street cred, Peebles got turned out long ago.

"Loves train" by COn funks shun is about her. crazy stuff.

Peebles hooked up Tracy Edmounds on to Babyface and that was another company production if you will.

anyway Peebles got TLC and had a deal that linned her pockets up. had she and LA made it together longer she and him would have gotten there SUgar Hill records on. Peebles was all street on that paper work.

when la and babyface split up ad Laface got sold Peebles got taken care of nicely.

her first two albums went gold and i think the 2nd one went platinum.

TLC had to pay her 3 milion to buy the name back so i know she got some serious cake and bank. Peebles got some Pimp in that blood stream and she ain't nothing nice.

if the true story of LA and Babyface ever came out it would be a motion picture and book you couldn't put down.

i call her the ELi Manning because she been hit and miss and then throw a haymaker and wins and Win big.

right place, right time and the artists and songs,etc..

peebles helped put laface the Producers on the map and as a label on the map as well so her story is compelling though as a artist one of those acts that you would dig a few things, but the sum ain't as deep as the parts except when you put in association and then she becomes a big time player.
2858217, Wow, this is a really great post, thanks mistermaxxx!
Posted by gritty, Tue Nov-26-13 06:05 AM
Like I said, I've known of her singles for quite some time but she was one of those artist to me (being that I'm only 27) who had a couple of catchy tunes but I would probably only check out a "best of" album if I ever took the time to check out her music.

Her story seems like a very interesting one and right off the bat after hearing more and more about her since the whole TLC movie along with recent interviews she's done and then thinking back on the Vh1 Behind The Music, she reminded me more and more of Suge Knight, so I get that comparison. Because it seems like she's more of a hustler and all about her bread but all the while she has a vision and knows what it takes to get things cooking.

I'm always amazed at how someone like Pebbles or Suge can be so smart when it comes to knowing what works in the business.

Man, thank you again for this post. This is just astonishing and very interesting!

2858456, thanks man, however she was smarter than suge
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Nov-27-13 04:14 AM
the music business is a hustler's paradise and like any young act it ain't how it seems and acts tend to cash in on other's mistakes.

she made more cake off of whip appeal and tlc than her career combined.

she was in the right place, right time situation.

the suge connection was gangstering "girlfriend" from vanessa williams and she practically sounds like her on the track.

peebles was about that money and keeping it hood.

the business like life who you now not what.
2858668, I get and see exactly what you're saying.

2858451, Pebbles Co-Wrote "Whip Appeal" - 1 of Babyface's Biggest Hits
Posted by J-Elijah, Wed Nov-27-13 02:33 AM
I knew Pebbles co-wrote "Whip Appeal" by Babyface when I looked at the song's credits on my Babyface greatest hits albums. I was thinking, most people don't know they wrote this song together. "Whip Appeal" was the song back in the day.
2858452, Pebbles Had Four #1 R&B Songs & Three Top 5 Pop Songs
Posted by J-Elijah, Wed Nov-27-13 02:50 AM
Pebbles was definitely no one hit wonder.
She had 4 primary chart topping songs -
-"Girlfriend" (#1 - R & B, #5 - Pop)
-"Mercedes Boy" (#1 - R & B, #2 - Pop)
-"Giving You the Benefit (of the Doubt)" (#1 - R & B, #4 - Pop)
-"Love Makes Things Happen" (Duet w/Babyface)" (#1 - R & B, #13 - Pop)

Those songs have held up over time and still sound great today.
I think she was pretty successful as a solo artist if you ask me.
She still look fine too!
2858453, Pebbles Dope Remake of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" (Slept On)
Posted by J-Elijah, Wed Nov-27-13 02:58 AM
This was my favorite song on Pebble's 3rd album "Straight From My Heart" which was a pretty good album with cuts also produced by Diddy, Organized Noize, Chucky Thompson, and Mario Winans.
She did the song justice and it was a great remake that should have been a single.

I bought that cd when I was a freshman at Howard and "I Can't Help It" stayed on repeat. They should have centered that Pebbles album around that song. People would be surprised how good the song is.
2858504, Peebles was the precursor to Faith Evans
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Nov-27-13 12:35 PM
drops the mic and leaves the stage

think about the career, side projects and business blueprint and hustling
2858679, Oh wow, I get that and that's a great example.
Posted by gritty, Thu Nov-28-13 01:38 PM
It's a great example for me because I grew up on 90's R&B and Hip Hop so it makes the picture all the more clearer for me. Thanks maxxx.
2859014, anytime man, Faith is the first lady of Bad Boy
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Dec-01-13 11:32 PM
and the other irony they both got hustled by Clive davis in different ways.
2858670, never was really too impressed with her as an artist
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Thu Nov-28-13 01:11 PM
I mean she was cute and all...but to me I never viewed her as super talented...more taking advantage of opportunity...which is all good for her..

but again..as a singer and an artist I was never super impressed with Pebbles.
2858685, See and I would've thought she was almost like a Vanity
Posted by gritty, Thu Nov-28-13 02:18 PM
but with more talented. Well maybe not quite Vanity looks wise, cause there's only Vanity, lol. But she still seemed like the type of chick niggas would've kept posters up of or proclaimed their "dream girl" back in the day.

I was just watching this performance of her's from Soul Train the other day, she was fine as fuck too! The performance was really good. Here's a link to it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7md8rases5A

But judging by way of her songs and all, she sounded pretty good on record. I agree with what maxxx said in that she's like Faith Evans because Faith has a good voice and can sing. But she's also no Whitney or Mariah for that matter. Nevertheless there is talent there and I respect when a songwriter can sing and write their own shit. It ain't never been enough of that in the game; a pretty woman who can write and sing. Nice a triple combo right there.

I miss (cause even the era I grew up in -- the 90's) when you had a woman who was equally as talented as she is beautiful. Now it's just all image with no real great singles.
2858794, That was a Cool Soul Train Video Seeing Babyface Sing Backup 4 Pebbles

Babyface was gettin' it in for Pebbles on that Soul Train clip. He was dancing hard too. I always wondered why Pebbles married LA Reid instead of Babyface.

2858686, the way her voice works............she knows how to do that "humm"
Posted by c71, Thu Nov-28-13 02:25 PM
that vibe she gives off in songs like "Mercedes boy" and "always"

very melancholy....like Cherelle too

that's what makes some of her hits timeless (definitely not "Girlfriend"). Just the right touch....

Sort of like the melancholy vibe Patrice Rushen gives on "forget me nots" and "watch out".

A little bit of soul, restraint and melancholy can take songs to the stratosphere...

Aaliyah had that too...ability to communicate some melancholy
