2854536, why do we even get excited for new rappers at this point?

this is a spin off from another post

seems like every year we get a rapper thats supposed to "save the game!"

when the artist first drops we get heated over strong examples of brilliance, then the PR machine starts up, the public takes notice and before you know your favorite artist essentially becomes a shiny suit rapper.

I cant think of a single rapper that crossed over and still kept it...hip hop once they got big*

*in recent times, this excludes the roots and a few fringe examples.

**yes, I am still bitter as fuck over what happened to Wale

***I hope my point was undestood

****I'm not saying this happens 100% of the time, but its happened enough for me to not even get hyped off of new talent because in the back of my head I think "....will soon be doing a few bars on hot euro dance rnb track in a few months"
2854541, there's no new ground to break, its all been done so rap is boring

me, mr show, mash comp, brooklyn what, mgmt, mccurty, ashley, nodima, justin_scott, ect

but according to the hip hop police around these parts, we're all just easily manipulated posers pretending to like new rappers to stay young and hip

2854555, Man, I'm just looking for good music. And there's plenty of it.
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Nov-07-13 05:21 PM
I gave up looking for someone to "save" hip-hop almost 20 years ago. It is what it is and there will pretty much always someone making music that I like. And that's all that it takes to make me happy.

2854560, Because we love Hip Hop?

That to me is like asking someone why do you get excited to see the sunrise or why do you get excited to go to the beach. There will be good days and bad days but it's a part of my life so I tend to focus on what I like rather than bitching about someone rapping on a song that I don't like. I just don't listen to that particular song if it doesn't move me. No artist in the history of recording has made music that everyone in their fan base 100% loves. Jazz fans complain that Jazz died like 40 or 50 years ago. Rock fans whine that real rock is dead and so on and so forth. Hearing new voices and new perspectives always excites me no matter what genre of music it is so I guess I just can't relate to the idea that there is no reason to listen to new voices.

2854570, i dont think you got me. Im up on whats going down.
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-07-13 06:08 PM
the point is just straight up fear when everybody is on your favorite rapper and what happens when they cross over.....
2854592, I think I understand.
Posted by stone_phalanges, Thu Nov-07-13 07:37 PM
But at the same time. You might end up with b.o.b but you could end up with big krit, yeah his album is wack, but he still puts out dope mix tapes. I feel you though sometimes you want that collective excitement when you and everyone else can just vibe on a great artist (like what's happening with Kendrick) but most times cuz many of the dope rappers don't get much shine you feel like its just you vibin' to dope music by yourself when sometimes you want something to rally around.

2854709, I can't really think of any rappers that disappointed.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Nov-08-13 10:28 AM
But I am probably not as picky as you, because MMG Wale makes as much sense to me as Go Go Wale did.

But I did find the more social concepts-oriented Wale more intriguing and relatable than girls, girls, sneakers Wale.

kindly go above your post and listen to Muggs...he's 20x better than Wale and they are from the same area. I'm not trolling or spamming, just stating facts.
2854762, I don't care about Wale much at all.

Just responding to the OP.

I'm just saying, from Wiz Khalifa to Waka Flocka Flame to Guilty Simpson to Young Roddy, new rappers tend to deliver exactly what I expect from them. And then some legitimately go beyond my expectations like Kendrick and Chance.

But I can't think of anyone that's let me down for many reasons other than slowing down the pace or disappearing. Rich Boy, for example.

2854729, You don't feel as though Kendrick has lived up to his hype thus far?
Posted by self_ish, Fri Nov-08-13 11:14 AM
2854731, He definitely didn't become a "shiny suit rapper"
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Fri Nov-08-13 11:25 AM
2854736, exactly, hes still holding tight to hip hop while still being major

2854739, Here are some ideas.....
Posted by , Fri Nov-08-13 12:03 PM
I'm an old ass man and I love listening to new Hip-Hop music. Not sure why people think Hip-Hop needs to be saved. Hip-Hop saves me every day from the monotony of most american pop music....and my job... I don't think it needs much help at this point.

BTW, I think there are plenty more avenues to be paved.

How about more super group collabs.

How about rappers dropping Acapellas and letting the masses make the beats... (see every em post this week)

How about looking back at classical music and finding inspiration
from that genre to move production forward.

How about more woman in the game getting shine.

How about better concept albums.

Where the fuck is OutKast!

2854758, every era has one that falls into 3 categorys
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Fri Nov-08-13 01:01 PM
one you embrace

the second one you either love or hate

the third is the one you are on the fence with.

Kayne fit in all three category's ten years back and still does depending who you ask.

now does Kendrick Lamar fit in that bag? does Drake fit in that bag?

was Lil Wayne ever in that bag?

Hip Hop is the only genre that still makes you ask those questions still

i cant think of one that started out as purely hip hop
so their crossing over wasnt that hard to swallow

i really dont understand what people mean by this

What makes for an interesting MC is very much personality-driven, and personality is not a replicable thing. Flows can be imitated, not so much the complete package of temperament + experience (and subsequently: worldview, identity, sense of humor, etc). If the skills are up to par, what a good rapper has achieved is conveying that personality to you, making you feel what he's about. Enthusiasm about a new rapper is less for me about "are they pushing the technical side of the craft" as much as "is this unique and making me feel something in a new/different way?"

(edit: not so concerned whether they lose it down the line, someone else will always pop up to hold my enthusiasm)
