I think I only really liked one song "Who's Da Flava?". But I didn't cop the tape, cuz I could never find it at Strawberries or Sam Goody.

But I had that song a couple of self made mixtapes and played it in my walkman. I think it was around the same time as my Red Hot Lover Tone phase.

2846852, Drag-On. "Down Bottom" had me think he was gonna drop a classic
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Oct-09-13 01:30 PM
for some reason.
I was 14-15.

Also, Sage Francis... But I don't regret that one the same way though, because that dude can WRITE. But I was being influenced by the hip hop internet of the time.
2846854, The internet loved Sage

2846952, That they did.

It's just that back then, backpackers were the ones really dominating the forums and ANYTHING that was outside of the norm was championed as being so much smarter and better.

Same with Anticon.

Same wtih most of Def Jux. ESPECIALLY Cannibal Ox. I TRIED to like that shit. Cats STAYED raving up and down about how great the album was, but, I just couldn't get with the industrial beats.

Wonder where all those fans are today...

Kinda like how, back in the 90s how EVERYONE was a Bulls fan, and not because they like Jordan. THEY'D ALWAYS BEEN Bulls fans...

Can't find but a few nowadays.
2847146, uhh for Cold Vein they're pretty mcuh still everywhere

>got check ANY best of 00s list and thre cold vein is on their

I just STILL can never get into that album. To me, it's that weird, out there hip hop that tends to mostly be praised by non-urban denizens. Which is why I brought it up when Anticon and Sage Francis came up, because, if my memory serves me right, they were all lauded the same amount of praise by those same media outlets.

And, my main beef is that, at one point, the only hip hop albums that got praise by those kinds of guys was either Jay and Kanye albums or REALLY underground stuff like the aforementioned artists.

It wasn't until Pitchfork saw a market for praising lesser known gangster rap artist that everyone else followed tow and started to actually listen to these albums with a different, more OPEN ear.
2847664, Im hip, thats when I first realized the internet was
Posted by Alphabet, Sun Oct-13-13 03:26 PM
forming a whole separate sub genre of sorts of 'their own' style of what they call hip-hop.

Man i tired to give all that shit a honest listen..and I could NOT fuck with it at all..Im SO glad all that didnt stick.

I liked Aesop Rock in doses, but it seems like he started going more and more AWAY from that sub culture. El-P seemed to as well even though he's kind of the Godfather of that style, but it seem like he realized how asshole-ish that scene was and moved on too.

If I remember right didn't Murs put a nail in the coffin in that genre too with a song?

2846858, Yeah, I bought an Anticon-record once...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Wed Oct-09-13 01:51 PM
..."Music for the advancement of Hip-Hop" (LOL!!!) and that was also solely because of the internet and "everyone" there loving them and calling them the future and shit.

For me, it wasn't peer-pressure or any shit like that-I was too old for that-but rather me feeling I just HAD to hear them due to the hype and just felt the need to have an opinion (maybe that is some kind of peer-pressure). I didn't like it at all though so no regrets even if I could have bought beer for the money instead (=my other expense at the time)...
2846883, WOW, READ MY MIND!!! And I actually thought his single "Niggas

I can't even remember one track from them dudes now
AMG's Bitch Betta Have My Money was a Miami classic, and that's about it

2846886, LOL @ weed carriers. I donno...in L.A., the hood folks loved more
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Oct-09-13 03:15 PM
than just those songs. Jiggable pie, If you want it, Be alright, and a few of their songs back then were dope. And Hi-C's album in 2003 was FIRE...Quik got the hell off on "Do it." AMG has made a few randomly good songs since Rhythmalism as well. Oh, and 2nd II None "Classic 220" had GREAAAAAAAT production on it...Quik murdered the whole shit, with "Up in da club" as the main single.

But yeah, I'd say 220 were pretty damn average. Hi-C and AMG were funny as hell, all personality really.
2847214, AMG...a week carrier? not hardly. he had JOINTS.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Thu Oct-10-13 05:20 PM
that first album is a personal classic. and i know we used to run the hell out of numerous tracks when i did college radio and parties. AMG and 2IINone to a smaller extent had legit fans out this way.

One was half West Coast, with Mack 10, Ice Cube, Snoop, Quik, Suga Free, along with Outkast, DMX, Jay, Timbaland, a few more.

The other was.....................ALL NO LIMIT CD'S.

In 98, I actually felt "Da Last Don" might have been the greatest Rap CD of all time.

I even bought the Basketball compilation and the Lil Soldiers album.

However, I remember hearing a song by Young Bleed on the radio that wasn't too bad (don't remember which one) and Mia X was decent from what I remember.

Basically, there *might* be some gems on that label that I consiously avoided but I don't care enough to find out honestly...

I still to this day never seen as much dedicated devotion from it's core fans than that time period, outside of 2Pac.

I admit I copped a couple of those multicolored, Pen & Pixel designed collections myself. Mystical, Fiend, Bleed were some good artist tho.

Whats crazy is damn near everybody was die hard No Limit then all of a sudden, a unorthodox bounce by one Mannie Fresh with Juvie talkin bout "Ha!?" crushed those buildings all the way down.

Don't know if anyone remember them; it was Michael Franti's project before he went all "soulful" and "spiritual" with Spearhead. They did some industrial-meets PE-type beats with Franti rambling on top and got lots of hype in non-hip-hop circles (I don't remember the Hip-Hop media giving them much props at all). That was some bullshit in retrospect; nice "message" though.

I never dug Consolidated though, that's some kind of relief...

I'm like, Zoe ain't got that kind of content to warrent 28 mixtapes. He REALLY shouldn't have done that. That much product in such a short period of time will DEFINITELY expose his weakness.

Kind of like Lil B.
2847575, yep I remember that

The fact that a nigga threw 28 MIXTAPES in 28 DAYS out in the wind and not ONE song stuck? Damn...

He was my favorite rapper. I'd tell people he was (technically) better than Jay-Z, and that he deserved The Game's spot, even when I was in Game's camp I felt that way!
2847354, I'm starting to feel that way about Jay Electronica

The early freestyles and guests verses I thought he was the best thing out then the album dropped and it was all downhill from there

I think it actually showed MAD potential. Would have rated it a B+. But, by the second and everything after that, it was all downhill. And, then, he just CONTINUED to make bad career and personal decisions.

An Eminem Stan album? Seriously?!
2847562, i love that first album
Posted by Playa_Politician, Sat Oct-12-13 06:42 PM
I didn't hear it when it came out but a few years later i got around to it. shit is tight, hype-nitus, how we roll, channel zero, get retarded, what's goin on, i honor u, how come. i could see why people didn't get into it, but you like his style shit was cool.

2847301, not only did i own a copy of will smith's "willineum," but i wore it out.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Oct-10-13 10:41 PM
it wasnt a game.
i learned about the clash from the sample for Will 2 K.

i thought the MJ "working day and night" interpolation was hot.

that interlude where he raps with DJ Jazzy Jeff,
i thought they both killed it.

every corny line on the album, i thought it was hot.

anyway, i went back and listened to that album
after years of getting a crash course on hip hop from my roommate.
the album is unlistenable*

*noteable exception: "the rain," f/ Jill Scott is still awesome.
i still fuck with that record.

the rest is embarrassingly bad.
2847462, So Fresh is still dope
