if they left the vocal sample close to normal speed it was cool. RZA used vocal samples too but he rarely sped them up to ridiculous speeds.

When I first heard Bound 2 off Yeezus I was like "Damn, he tryna bring that chipmunk soul sound back! He must've sped this shit up to 78 to get it to sound like that."
Turns out it was just a straight loop, not sped up or nuthin...

I don't think many rappers are picking those type of beats anymore but I still hear beats on cloudsound and various other places where a producer will have one or two sped-up/chimpmunk sounding samples in their beats.
I don't think it was ever a bad thing to do it, it just got out of hand cause everyone started to do it and some producers where going too far with how fast/high the pitch of the sample was to the point it was funny instead of listenable.

I used to really dig his stuff especially Personal Legend Vol 1 and a couple of the joints after but his sound is so dated now
