The first I heard of him was through Zappa. The chemistry he had with Zappa and Napoleon Brock was incredible. "Inca Roads" really is incredible to hear, the first time or the thousandth.

http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/news-mainmenu-139/70-2013/12804-jazz-breaking-news-keyboard-legend-george-duke-dies-aged-67

It has been reported veteran jazz, R&B, funk and fusion keyboard virtuoso George Duke has died aged 67. This news comes after a difficult period for the acclaimed keyboardist and composer whose wife Corine passed away just over a year ago. The Radio Facts website states that Duke died on 5 August but no other details have yet been confirmed as to the cause of his death, which comes while he had just launched his latest album, Dreamweaver, which he’d dedicated to his wife’s memory.

Former Supremes member and friend Sherrie Payne stated: “I just received the devastating and sad news that the great musician, George Duke, passed away this evening at St. John’s hospital in L.A. It was just one year earlier, 18 July that his beloved wife and my friend, Corine, went to be with the Lord. Please keep his sons, Rasheed and John, in your prayers.”

Other leading musicians including Headhunters bassist Paul Jackson reacted with sadness to the news of Duke’s death: "Just lost a great brother and friend George Duke RIP I know Heaven awaits you my sympathy to all your friends and family Paul Jackson." While jazz flautist Bobbi Humphrey posted on her Facebook page saying: "I am so hard trying. Too much to lose George! Please pray for me! George Duke! Forty years, my friend! Lord, why? Heaven! A little bit funkier! R.I.P. Dear Heart!"

Duke’s career spanned jazz, funk and fusion beginning with his modern own jazz group in the 1960s backing the likes of Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon, but he was soon moving into the fusion terrain that would define much of his career as he began a longstanding musical partnership with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty in the early 1970s. He was invited to join Frank Zappa’s ground breaking band The Mothers Of Invention and worked with them from 1969-1975, while also going on to work with Sonny Rollins and co-lead a band with Billy Cobham. His solo career began to take shape too as he released a number of classic albums for MPS and Epic including Faces in Reflection, I Love the Blues, The Aura Will Prevail, Brazilian Love Affair, Master of the Game and Thief In the Night.

In the 1970s his producing credits also began to mount up and included work with Raul de Souza, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and A Taste of Honey as well as many funk and R&B artists such as the Pointer Sisters, Smokey Robinson, 101 North, George Howard, Gladys Knight, Najee, Take 6, Howard Hewett, Chanté Moore, Everette Harp, Rachelle Ferrell (his key collaborator in the early-1990s), Gladys Knight, Keith Washington, Gary Valenciano, Johnny Gill and Anita Baker. The 1980s saw him team up with bass icon Stanley Clarke in their ongoing Clarke/Duke jazz fusion project as well as sessions with Miles Davis, while the 1990s and 2000s saw Duke focus on his solo career as producer/composer and performer – leading one of the leanest and meanest live bands around.

Duke had recently returned to form in the studio and remained a hugely popular live draw at festivals and jazz clubs around the world. He will be sorely missed by his legions of fans from both R&B/soul and jazz-fusion worlds.

God bless the man.....
2829462, Nnooo, Not George aka Mr. Dukey Stick!!!!!
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Aug-06-13 12:30 PM
Damn, I didn't even know that George was sick or having any health complications, and the sad part about it is that he just released a new album "Dreamweaver" a few weeks ago.

What's even worst is that his wife passed away a year ago, I guess he was too heartbroken, even when recording his last album; but now both of them can be together, I know his two songs & Dianne Reeves will be really sad as well, rest in peace George M. Duke. :(

2829465, Sad day.

and I mean this Cat could stretch and still have his own sound. i mean he could and would play with anyone and still hold his own.

he had an ear for detail and the way he went about it.

Prayers go out to His Family,Friends and Fans worldwide.

He is united with His wife and I know she meant a great deal to his being and soul. i know he was hurting. he doesn't have to hurt no more

I never knew nor met the man but damn this has me shook... Just realizing now how much this man and his music has meant in my life. making it more surreal is the fact he just dropped a new album and I ended my last show with one of his new tracks.. I ain't really dug much of his work these last 10-15 years but I'm feeling parts of this new album... and now he's gone. Shit

Sad, sad news. Mr. Duke had JOINTS! I've been a fan since a kid when my first introductions to his music were "Dukey Stick" and "Reach For It". It would blow my mind years later when I discovered and explored his catalog. He was so versatile and skilled in whatever genre he chose to play. Of course, I didn't know him on a personal scale but through reading and watching interviews of him (like his personal musings on his website for instance), he seemed like a beautiful spirit. Huge loss.

I was kind of curious to hear "Dreamweaver" mostly cause just a week ago I was jamming to "Dukey Treats" and was amazed how he still was making funky jazz tunes, so when I went to the record store and saw that he had just dropped a new album I knew it had to be on the same level.

That video of him talking about it and hearing snippets of the songs makes you want to go cop it, I'm glad he had a chance to put this out before he passed instead of afterwards; the way he was talking about how "these are the songs that made the album" got me wondering how many songs he recorded for "Dreamweaver" that didn't make it.

What album(s) do I start with?
