For the past few years, I've been trying to see what the hype was about and I kept falling asleep. Like to me everything she does is done better by Jill and Badu. Plus, in my eyes, she's an OK singer.

I know a lot of people fuck wit her, but yea if I have insomnia, I YouTube her shit to help me go to sleep.
2828567, wait... she has hype? news to me n/m

badu and jill are more interesting, but she has her lane and does her thing i aint mad,

she has a few nice cuts but has yet to make it to the top tier imo but is true to herself and her craft
2828636, I don't care for her music myself

2828681, I've never had much of an opinion on her either way but

Brown Skin came on the radio yesterday. I wasn't mad at it actually.
2828684, Me and you both

She's very talented and seems like genuinely good peoples but...
India bores me musically.

While you can tell she means well, her lyrics are often Hallmark card-level pedestrian. Her production is similarly vanilla.

That said, I still believe that Strength, Courage & Wisdom from her debut is a beautiful song.

2828699, Half agree.
Posted by denny, Sun Aug-04-13 12:31 AM
Yah, the lyrics are cliche. But the music is far from boring imo. I'd rather listen to her play guitar than listen to most of her contemporaries sing. Probably cause I'm a guitar player. I wouldn't say she's a 'great' singer....but I'll say it in another way....I'd rather listen to her instrumentals than the other people she's compared to in this thread.

I don't know her entire catalogue, but my impression is that the instrumentation is more traditional than someone like Badu's records.....but also just plain better. She got a cool rhythmic, soul style on guitar and that's the thing that makes her stand out to me. I'd like to hear her do like an unplugged album...something with sparse arrangements and some great session players backing her up.

But I hear you that her concepts/lyrics might be considered a little bland. It's just that I'm equally unimpressed with those of Badu or Jonalle....and especially Jill. I say 'especially' on the sole basis of that video/song Scott did for 'Hate on Me'. Haven't seen something from Arie THAT BAD. I WILL say that J Monae puts on a hell of a live show....in fact, I thought it was shockingly good. Worlds better than the 2 Erykah shows I saw in terms of entertainment and vibe. If I wanna check out an act on the basis of concepts/lyrics/presentation...I'm not really checking for any of the mentioned artists.

So even though Badu and Monae might be more clever and artistic in their presentation. For pure musical enjoyment...I'm still taking India Arie.

I was kinda intrigued by her at first, but everything about her screams the soundtrack of like fucking pottery barn.
2828689, musically she would run the weaves off Beyonce and ALicia Keys
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sat Aug-03-13 11:29 PM
heads put together IMO. Indie just missing a money track, however she got a commerical sound.

she better than Janelle and badu as well, Arie just is boring in a sit down and read poetry Maya Angelou lazy day kinda way.
2828693, Her voice is her strong suit.

2828702, I had no idea she was getting props, especially here...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sun Aug-04-13 12:47 AM
As Orbit_Established said, this is a weird post, kind of like saying "I just can't fuck with Nickelback" (OK, maybe not like that but almost).

But yes, she obviously has talent (tm).

And she's obviously a strong and independent woman who would never put on a weave or shake her ass or sell her sex in order to make money.

And she's (obviously?) a complete fucking bore...
2828707, Comparing her to Jill and Badu is stupid.
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sun Aug-04-13 01:35 AM
You're better off just picking the handful of songs she has that fit
your tastes. I'm telling you now, there won't be many if Jill & Badu
are any indication of what you want stylistically.

This is because he's closer to folk as an artist than neo-soul... then
you mention her voice... she doesn't even have a neo-soul approach
to singing. She's like "black folk" or "afro folk" or something. She's
definitely not neo-soul or comparable to Jill or Erykah, musically.

This post is like saying "Ion't fuck with Lenny Kravitz, so link me to some
songs that are better than R.Kelly or D'angelo."
2828709, She's the artist I enjoy least who id be happiest if my daughter was a fan

one that many women have dealt with for much longer than however
long she's been singing.

Luther Vandross sang about love and heartbreak his whole career,
as did many others... plenty artists sing about the same things forever.
Raekwon been rapping about pitching cain for 20 yrs... but apparently, that's
cool because he raps for the niggas still doing it. Well maybe India sings for
the women around the world who are having body image issues.

I understand it just may not appeal to you, but all that extra stuff you sayin'
doesn't add up.
2829791, weird post indeed

Huh??

I didn't know India Arie was getting so much "hype".

Just pick any artist and say..."I don't get all the hype" then compare them to other popular artists with the same gender and race.

Is this a promotional post?

2829845, she's just a bad artist. In my opinion
Posted by cipha_2, Wed Aug-07-13 10:47 AM
People I talk to about music don't understand why I dislike her so much.

I think it's because she's so fuckin simple. Songversation?

That shit sounds like some shit you'd make up to mock the whole def poet movement.

Se's a clown.

She don't even write songs, just words.
2829855, are you posting from 2001?
