It's very close. If it's not, it's because Will Smith is ahead.

I can see how this could come up if you listen to some of the albums WIll and jeff did you hear some real raw Rhymes... just the commercial stuff was on the radio.

2813313, RE: Better Rapper: Fresh Prince or Large Professor Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sat Jun-15-13 02:02 PM
I mean, even if you listen to Large Pro's "LP" from 2009, many of the rhymes sounds like something Fresh Prince would have thrown away in 89. I know people like to hate on Will, due to his commercial success and "white people friendliness" white bigging up Large Pro for his lack thereof and the fact that he produces... But LYRICALLY, they really are neck and neck.

LP IMO made-and make-better music than Will Smith but as emcees, it's not like you are comparing Will with Kool G Rap or something. Will Smith was a perfectly fine mc-if at times corny-on the early records. LP may be a solid mc by rapping producer standards but it's not like he is some Mount Rushmore guy or anything; let's not forget that even on some of the rhymes on "Breaking atoms", he was just as corny as Will at his worst ...

And keep his hand around a hundred dollar bill.
(sorry, but that shit is just as corny as Will's corniest moments — and yet, just like Will, it worked in the song)
Both were middle of the road MCs. This is actually a very fair comparison.

2813402, I love Large Pro but he's far from a beast on the mic. Posted by third_i_vision, Sun Jun-16-13 12:26 AM
Listened to The LP tonight and a bunch of his rhymes were just awkward, especially from a word-placement standpoint. Really strange cadence even though his flow was on point.
I'll take The Fresh Prince over Extra P on the mic, but Large Pro's production puts him in my Top 10 of All Time. I'd also take Diamond D over LP on the vocals, but once again, Large Pro smashes him on the beats.
Just now realizing that this is how people rode for Kanye back in the mid-to-late 2000s, when he still had some kind of grasp on production.

2813521, Can anybody really show how Large Pro is an "elite rapper" Posted by Ashley Ayers, Mon Jun-17-13 03:28 PM
Nope... you can't.
Of course I knew this poll would turn out this way, because of reasons I've mentioned above... Will Smith came along in the time when winning grammys was considered being a "sellout", and even to this day, people leave him out of the "real hip hop" discussion, but he's just as much "real hip hop" as Large Pro. Try to explain why he isn't. There's no case for the argument. Funny thing is, Jaz-O and Jay-Z have a little joint called "Hawaiian Sophie" where they're trying to do exactly what Will Smith excelled at. Look at the video and tell me I'm lying. They just weren't good at it. Will had a gift for that humorous "corny" (or whatever you wanna call it) rap, but he also had technical ability on par with guys that are elevated to "elite" status like Large Pro. Hate if you must, but he's "real hip hop"... not to mention a talented storyteller.
DEAL WIDIT!

2813923, flows are similar..BUT... Posted by liveguy, Tue Jun-18-13 01:51 PM
LP had a better voice...
LP was less cheesy...
LP had better beats....
Fakin' the Funk >>> Brand New Funk (or any other Jazzy Jeff, Fresh Prince song)
LP wins by marginal means, but he is better....

2813943, people are gonna say LP because he's more "hip hop"... Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jun-18-13 02:30 PM
but this is not a landslide by any means. I've listened to EVERY Will Smith album...and even with the corny-type commercial joints on them, Will is a VERY capable lyricist. I love Large Pro, for sure. His latest album is one of my favorite shits to every drop, but that joint from 09...the LP??? Is line for line some of the most cringe-worthy rhyming I've ever heard. I would challenge someone to listen to "Lost and Found" album all the way through and honestly say Will is rapping his ass off.
|
2813974, LMAOOO this is hilarious. Mainly because the first reaction from most Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Jun-18-13 03:06 PM
people, especially Hip Hop heads and Lesson heads, is "WHAT THE FUCK?????" but when you really look at it with ZERO bias...(and if you don't count the Gettin Jiggy/Miami/Switch phase)....it's really not a huge difference.
I would even argue that Will's "corny" = more personality than LP.
LP being a producer automatically elevates his name to us, to where we might still give him more props as a rapper because of this, if that makes sense.
You can actually argue it either way. In Will's case, you can say that he was better in his lane (silly, partying, Kid n Play, Ahmad, Skee-Lo) than Large Pro was in his lane. Or...you can say that Large Pro's lane required more skill, and wasn't as lame/wack/for the kids.
|
2814247, Lol... It is funny indeed. Posted by Ashley Ayers, Wed Jun-19-13 05:41 AM
>I would even argue that Will's "corny" = more personality than >LP.
Oh definitely. Will Smith's personality on record was damn near unmatched, even back then when vocal inflection was more common.
>LP being a producer automatically elevates his name to us, to >where we might still give him more props as a rapper because >of this, if that makes sense.
Right, this and the fact that he's kinda considered a current preserver of "real hip hop". He's still doing his thing and producing... and has the video where he's showing all the old classic records to the little girl, etc. However, since I didn't ask who's the better ARTIST, anybody using that to determine the choice is answering the wrong question, lol.
>You can actually argue it either way. In Will's case, you can >say that he was better in his lane (silly, partying, Kid n >Play, Ahmad, Skee-Lo)
Yep, and I would say absolutely nobody excelled in that lane like Will Smith. As stated above, he had mad personality, but also his rhymes were coherent and easy to follow without being "wtf why did he say that?" status, and he was an interesting storyteller who kept your attention.
>than Large Pro was in his lane. Or...you >can say that Large Pro's lane required more skill, and wasn't >as lame/wack/for the kids.
When you say "required more skill" are you talking about the fact that he produced as well? Because him rapping definitely didn't require more skill, lol. As for being "lame/wack/for the kids", as mentioned earlier in the post, LP had wack and "corny" lines, but he wasn't for the kids. But concerning being for the kids... first, I don't think it takes away from rapping ability. On the contrary, it says more for his personality and delivery, because keeping a child's attention isn't easy at all. To do that and still entertain adults is quite a feat.

2814451, I can't call it, but I will say this Posted by spenzalii, Wed Jun-19-13 08:28 PM
Anybody that says Will can't rap has no clue what they're talking about. Dig into the albums past the commercial singles and Will was no slouch.
Extra P is a personal favorite from Main Source on, so I'd have some bias to work out (which is why I can't call it)

2814525, thats just a bunch of mamma-ja-hambo Posted by go mack, Thu Jun-20-13 07:57 AM
one of the corniest lines ever on one of the dopest posse cuts
I'd go with Fresh Prince as a rapper
|
2814526, It's closer than it appears on the surface Posted by Sleepy, Thu Jun-20-13 08:19 AM
Extra P is definitely been a part of more than a handful of classic tracks, but rhyming isn't his best attribute. "Lookin' at the Front Door" is one of my favorite songs of all time. That being said, he's more than competent on the mic.
The Fresh Prince on the surface seems like a very elementary rapper, but he's a clever emcee. "Brand New Funk" was when I really started to see this kid as being a gifted writer and emcee. Sometimes his style comes off as corny, but I think because he was always marketed as family friendly. I don't doubt the guy can rock anything that's presented to him.
|
2814534, Fresh Prince..... Posted by murph71, Thu Jun-20-13 09:20 AM
LP was always more "hip-hop" than Fresh Prince. Hell "Looking Out The Front Door" is easily one of the greatest hip-hop written songs of all time (it was grown man rap before that term became over used)....
But technically Prince was an all-around better rapper....Just a lot more diverse of an MC...Different flows...Different subject matter....
Just saying....
