2812116, What album have you been stuck on lately??
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Jun-11-13 12:06 PM
Man, I been on "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas" for like a week now. Shit just keeps gettin better. Plus it's long as hell. I did a 30 mile bike ride Sunday morning and it lasted damn near the whole ride. It went off and I stopped and threw on "People Hear What They See" and only got to track 3 before I was back at the crib. SOOOO many dope beats. "Bullyshit", "Players of the Game" and "Bartender Says" are my standouts, though. What about yall?

P.S. I would pay to have like a 5 minute instrumental of the beat that starts at the 6:22 mark here:

I used to think this was a very overrated album. Thought the highs were some of Kast's best, but the rest of the album was meh to trash. Probably would have given it a 7 out of 10. The last few days I've reevaluated it heavily, finally HEARD some tracks I just dismissed in the past, and would give it a 9 out of 10 if you asked me today.

Stopped sleeping on Oddisee's People Hear What They See, and also checked out The Uncluded's Hokey Fright and the new J. Cole and Mac Miller.

2812306, AZ - Pieces of A Man
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Jun-11-13 10:17 PM
I always group this album with In My Lifetime, Vol 1

I think with a few cuts and better sequencing both could be AZ's and Jay-Z's best album respectively.

I remember when the video for Hey AZ dropped and how much I wasn't feeling it.

Especially after the Firm album, I felt like I was going to get more commercialized bullshit from AZ.

The album dropped the same day as Goodie Mob's Still Standing.

The album starts off strong with New Life and I'm Known.

Then the monster Nas collabo, How I'm Livin' which just continued the strong track record AZ and Nas had on features.

Trading Places was the official single and while that track was "whatever" back then, but now I like it even more.

What's The Deal is actually a good commercial track. I'll forever hate rappers for putting a sex interlude on the album. Same with someone getting shot. So the fact the interlude is at the beginning of this joint kinda knocks it back for me.

Love Is Love is probably the best song on the album. Great guest verse by Nature. This is what the Firm album should've sounded like.

The Payback and Sosa are two great 1verse songs. Beats are both tailor made for A.

Just Because was a slacker and just another extension of Hey AZ and the commercial shit on the Firm album.

It's a Boy Thing was horrible and I just remember hating that beat. It's not that bad now and I can play it but it definitely would've been cut.

Pieces of A Man and Last Dayz are both great tracks. 2 of the top 5 on the album.

Whatever Happened is one of the few times RZA did production outside of the Wu and RZA's need to mention "pussy lips" aside, this is a great joint.

Trial of the Century should've been cut. The beat is actually dope but I don't know who allowed that dude to do hooks.

Betcha Don't Know was like Just Because...more nonsense.

I've actually grown to like Hey AZ and probably wouldve taken off Just Because and Betcha Don't Know and just kept Hey AZ.

It's a Boy Thing and Trial of the Century also go.

My track listing would've looked like this

1 New Life
2 I'm Known
3 Trading Places
4 How Ya Livin'
5 Love Is Love
6 Hey AZ
7 Sosa
8 What's The Deal
9 Pieces of A Man
10 Whatever Happened
11 The Payback
12 Quiet Money (intro joint on Love Is Love later found on Half-A-Mil's album)
13 Last Dayz
2812348, RE: AZ - Pieces of A Man
Posted by melanon, Wed Jun-12-13 03:01 AM
'What the deal' is no joke one of my favorite AZ songs of all time. The sex intro is irritating though. But yeah, I have every bit as much love for that tune as the Rather Uniques etc.

Rip Kenny Greene. I also was a big fan of Intro.

2888555, My cousin sent me a copy of Silk Pyramids by Meyhem Lauren
Posted by dilslot, Wed Jun-11-14 01:28 PM
He's got a weird shaped head (there's a picture of him without a hat on the inside of the cover, he kind of looks like Mr. Potato head or a beluga whale with glasses, I'm torn between the two) but when you look past that the album's pretty good. I told my cousin on the phone that I thought it was solid queens street shit and he just laughed at me. He never told me why though so maybe he was just laughing at something his brother (Daryl) was doing in the background. His brother's pretty funny in a "you laugh at him" kind of way, so it's very possible. There was one time when we were eating dinner with Daryl and he was eating coleslaw. Every time he took a bite of his cole slaw he would get some on his cheek and he never even noticed it. At first it was kind of annoying but then it just got funnier as dinner progressed. My cousin and I were cracking up and couldn't stop laughing the whole time and Daryl started getting really pissed. Of course that made us laugh even more, and finally after we had been laughing at him for about half an hour out of nowhere Daryl picked up one of the hot dogs that was on his plate and stuffed it in his pants. I looked at my cousin like "What the heck is your brother doing?" Then he unzipped his fly and pulled the hot dog out and started screaming at us. He was really cursing up a storm and he kept screaming "SUCK IT YOU LITTLE RANDY'S!! SUCK IT!" And by this point me and my cousin were really laughing hysterically, I mean almost choking on our food. And then Daryl goes "WHAT!!?? IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!!??" and he starts squirting mustard all over the hot dog in some kind of crazy rage and suddenly runs over to where I'm sitting and just starts shoving the hotdog in my mouth and mashing it in my face, but he's like half humping me, half just smushing the hot dog in my face with his hands. It was crazy. You ever have something send you into hysterics but then suddenly something makes you angry too? Like if someone tickles you and at first it's funny but then it gets really annoying but you're laughing too hard to show how annoyed you are? It's very frustrating. I got really pissed when he started mushing my face with the hot dog and messing up my glasses but I was laughing so hard I couldn't stop and so I just started swinging at him since the words wouldn't come. Then my cousin was like, "Break it up! Break it up, you guys!" and came over to separate us. Everything got real quiet and awkward after that and we ended up finishing our dinner in silence, but when I look back on it now, it was really funny. Classic Daryl.

So anyway, the Meyhem Lauren album is pretty good. He's got this one song, "Can't Fuck 'em All," that's probably my favorite. The chorus goes something like, "I can't fuck em all, I can't fuck em all" and my neighbor Cliff loves to sing that part. I told Daryl he should make a remix called "I Can't Fuck Any of Them" and he just gave me a blank look. I don't know if Daryl's all there. His family probably should have gotten him tested at school when he was little, but they moved around so much I don't think they ever had the time.

Can't test 'em all.

He is on such a streak right now it's not even funny. Everything he's done the last few releases, both instrumental and otherwise, is so solid.

I've been known to put "Lusitania" on repeat and just let it play for a half hour, no joke; same with "Three White Horses" from Hands of Glory.

I thought Hands of Glory was just going to be a toss-off of unreleased stuff from Break It Yourself, wasn't expecting much... but there's a lot of good material on there. Not the sequential masterpiece that BiY was, but definitely worth a listen.

My only complaint about BiY was it ran just a touch too long. Don't know what I would cut, but I always found myself losing interest on the last few songs, even though they're all just as good as the rest of the lp...
