Posted by HellToDaNaw, Fri Jun-07-13 04:41 PM
it's out there. thoughts?
2811063, Its not as good as i was hoping but its way better than his 1st album
Posted by Menphyel7, Fri Jun-07-13 04:46 PM
Its a great 1.5 in there. I might like it more later but he def released some heat this year.

Him rhyming over 2 classic songs was ambitious as hell. He still 2 earnest imo
2811064, man you all about them 1.5s lmao.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jun-07-13 04:57 PM
2811090, lol yes GKMC probably the last album I ain't really ain't change
Posted by Menphyel7, Fri Jun-07-13 07:01 PM
I added cartoon and cereal to start it off with it but the rest stayed the same
2811086, Its crazy how much better this is than his first
Posted by Poetic_Truth, Fri Jun-07-13 06:37 PM
2811102, hmm liking it more than last album.

That one kinda worked.
2813331, i swear i thought i mistakenly d/l'ed a cole mixtape when this
Posted by DonWonJusuton, Sat Jun-15-13 03:13 PM
came on..... wow.. 2nd song in and i'm borderline mad lol.. dude needs to start letting other ppl produce for him..
2811216, Did people really not like his debut? Like, at all?
Posted by Oak27, Sat Jun-08-13 02:05 PM
Keep seeing comments every where saying how much better this is than his first and such (even here, already). I thought his first album was really good. So much that after a few listens I'd say if I end up liking this new one more, it won't be by much.

Besides that bullshit track with Missy and the one that track that followed I thought Cole World was great.
2811219, RE: Did people really not like his debut? Like, at all?
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sat Jun-08-13 02:15 PM
I didn't. He's not strong enough a producer to carry an entire album IMO.
2811226, nah too many songs about women and there struggles
Posted by Menphyel7, Sat Jun-08-13 03:21 PM
IT was not a good overall album and he left some heat off it
2811244, hell no that shit was bad.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sat Jun-08-13 05:45 PM
2811245, Guess I really am in the minority then haha

2811282, RE: Guess I really am in the minority then haha
Posted by stone_phalanges, Sat Jun-08-13 09:02 PM
Not really. The first album was dope. This is just typical OKP stuff. If you made a post right now about how Good Kid Maad City was dope the at least the first two posts would be about how it was waaaay overated.
2811294, I didn't HATE it.
Posted by Ketchums, Sat Jun-08-13 10:16 PM
But I don't revisit it much either.

I thought the singles were cool, but not as dope as the highlights of the album. I thought the production was boring; too many songs sounded so much alike that I couldn't tell them from one another. I've grown more sympathy after learning that much of Cole World was supposed to be Friday Night Lights, but that he had to take the L and drop a free tape to keep his buzz from going away; I thought FNL was incredible. Off of one listen, Born Sinner does seem more entertaining.

I think Cole's perspective is one that's very necessary in the mainstream rap perspective, and I REALLY want to see him win. I think there are rappers out there who are less technically skilled than him who are making better records in general though. Going to run back Born Sinner though.
2811521, I'm with you on this one
Posted by L0WD0WN, Sun Jun-09-13 08:36 PM
Never understood how somebody that likes hip hop music could not love this album. I can't argue it because it's a matter of taste but I truly am shocked when i hear somebody say Cole World is a bad album. For me, it's one of the best hip hop albums in a long time. Haven't listened to Born Sinner enough yet to judge but if it's better than Cole World, sounds like a classic.
2811535, It had some really good joints on it.
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sun Jun-09-13 09:39 PM
>Besides that bullshit track with Missy

You mean "Nobody's Perfect"? That's the only track I still play consistently
independent of the album. The rest I kinda have to be in a Cole mood
for. Come to think of it, I think that's the result of his overall sound
and vibe being very unlike anything currently out.
2811224, HUGE improvement over the first one..but it's a 3.5 stars at best
Posted by Hellyeah, Sat Jun-08-13 02:49 PM
i'm about to add a few tracks from the recent EP to make things more interesting
2811255, God I'm glad no one here is giving him much praise
Posted by blinded by the lights, Sat Jun-08-13 07:03 PM
The Nas comparisons this guy gets are so ridiculous. People are far too desperate to create 'this generation's X'. And it's so unnecessary, when there are so many great rappers out at the moment, why do people even try and force themselves to latch onto J.Narcolepsy.
2811283, RE: God I'm glad no one here is giving him much praise
Posted by stone_phalanges, Sat Jun-08-13 09:12 PM
Its sad that hip hop is such a zero sum game. No he isn't the next nas, or even the hottest out right now, but he still makes dope music. I like this album and the first was dope too. He talks about stuff that a lot of rapper don't (which isn't that much of an accomplishment in and of itself) but his music isn't defined by his subject matter. He just tries to make dope music.
2811300, like what? humor me.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sat Jun-08-13 11:02 PM

>too. He talks about stuff that a lot of rapper don't (which
>isn't that much of an accomplishment in and of itself)

because i aint hearing shit that isnt derivative of Kanye & Drake. shit even Wale.
2811318, His content isn't derivative of any of those guys actually.
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sun Jun-09-13 02:22 AM
He talks about his life, accomplishment, worries, failures successes,
etc.

He actually went to college and graduated. Seein' as how he graduated,
he can't be taking that from Kanye, because Ye talked about being
a dropout.

He talks about that and his desire to succeed and be a good man
and make his moms proud. Not sure who you're saying he took that from.

I'm not really sure what you're saying he took from Drake unless it's
talking about women, which would be ridiculous because he's a
hetero male too.

And Wale? No idea.

Feel free to try and explain.
2811425, without really thinking about it.
Posted by stone_phalanges, Sun Jun-09-13 02:40 PM
The decision to have an abortion or keep the baby even though you know you are not ready for it.

The only thing I meant it that he talks about things other than money, hoes (not women), and violence. It isn't much, but that still puts the variety of his subject matter 100 miles beyond 90% of rappers. It is a sad comment on hip hop but still true.
2811526, damn ain't you the nigga who love Cudi and Wiz?
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Jun-09-13 08:54 PM

Posted by 2nd2Nun, Mon Jun-10-13 03:15 PM
So do you not like him because you don't like the music, or because you feel he doesn't deserve the Nas comparisons?
2812047, Both.
Posted by blinded by the lights, Tue Jun-11-13 06:18 AM
I actually was a huge fan of his second mixtape. But I feel like he's got worse and worse since then. Or maybe just hearing him more has opened my eyes to how fucking boring his flow is, and how he tries way too hard with everything.
2811372, I have not liked him before, but the production on this is excellent
Posted by Admbmb, Sun Jun-09-13 10:45 AM
The raps are passable...decent stuff here and there. Nothing too mind blowing. But the production/mixing/mastering are excellent. Pure ear candy. Doesn't really sound like too many other albums out there right now. The song compositions are pretty catchy too. Huge step up from the last album, which I thought sucked really bad.
2811442, I wish he made harder music
Posted by urbgriot, Sun Jun-09-13 04:18 PM
Just saying his beats should hit more.
Lecrae makes harder music.
2811584, RE: J. Cole - Born Sinner
Posted by Benedict the Moor, Mon Jun-10-13 01:20 AM
I can respect his writing ability, but his subject matter and overall vibe/persona just bores me. i turned it off after the 5th song and went back to albert einstein.
2811739, Great album, digging the improvements in the production
Posted by Oak27, Mon Jun-10-13 01:12 PM
Though I liked his first album I can definitely agree that a lot of the songs sound the same, beat-wise. Definitely enjoyed this one just as much as the first though. Only track I'm not that into is the track with Miguel.
2811906, Let Nas Down...
Posted by _Torchbaras, Mon Jun-10-13 07:49 PM
was dope.
2812350, That horn.
Posted by cidolfas, Wed Jun-12-13 05:01 AM
The idea for the song is wack, however.
2812351, I lightweight cracked up when he said...

2812065, RE: J. Cole - Born Sinner - SOLID!!!
Posted by sandmann, Tue Jun-11-13 07:52 AM
The new album is pretty damn solid.

Cole is one of the best out today. Mainstream w/ heart....

2812331, I'm really surprised by this.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Wed Jun-12-13 12:37 AM
I listened to this straight through today and it is the first J. Cole release that has grabbed and kept my attention production wise and lyrically.

He was spittin on this shit and it was ALOT more fluid he has up to this point.

That being said......that Outkast sample....ehhhhh. Not as bad as Lupe spittin over T.R.O.Y. though. lol.
2812465, No way, Lupe over TROY >>>> Cole over Storytelling
Posted by Oak27, Wed Jun-12-13 02:23 PM
Lupe is a much better rapper and actual made a great song whereas Cole took essentially the same OutKast beat and spit rhymes WAY inferior to Kast's on the same beat.
2812636, I'm with Oak27
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Jun-13-13 01:20 AM
I could barely stand to listen to the J. Cole track...
2812615, Just got done listening to the whole album
Posted by dundee, Wed Jun-12-13 11:11 PM
I wasn't impressed at all. I def see this thing MAYBE getting one more listen and that's a big maybe :)
2812810, Loving these beats..
Posted by Original Juice, Thu Jun-13-13 02:33 PM
They have a strong 2-step garage vibe to 'em.

Diggin' this so far, and I've never been a big J.Cole fan. I may cop this.
2813310, shit's okay
