2809446, What do you think about this queer rap movement?
Posted by zoop, Sat Jun-01-13 02:23 AM
or whatever it is called and artists like

Le1f https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqs7iXKc93Q Spa Day

Mykki Blanco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSgVZEGpo6U Haze.Boogie.Life

Zebra Katz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oUmG7Tu50E Y I Do

Cakes Da Killa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mfc4EVHlNu0 Goodie Goodies

pitchfork wrote a big article on them last year http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/8793-we-invented-swag/
2809466, The "Goodies Goodies" joint was nice.

I like the totally in-your-face gayness of it, the "I don't give a fuck what you think about me" part...Some of them can rap but I kinda ain't feeling the kinda played-out "futuristic" beats on most of them.

More power to them though. Culturally, It's more interesting than the average.
2809526, do you think it sounds futuristic?
Posted by zoop, Sat Jun-01-13 02:08 PM
i always think of flying lotus and la beat scene as "futuristic production" which i agree is now played out, had been for the past year really.

le1f, mykki blanco, etc. sound more like a$ap mob, odd future or flatbush zombies which is like current hip-hop sound. i hear trap and southern hip hop when i listen to them.

i agree that they are more interesting than a lot of current rap artists. they sound more sinister and badass even if they are gay, lol.
2809483, Cakes is HEAVILY underrrated, the other dudes need more work
Posted by BigReg, Sat Jun-01-13 10:21 AM
LeIf and Blanco have superb production, but as MC's go they are kind of lacking, particularly Blanco. I haven't heard much Katz although what ive heard hasn't really impressed me. He clearly had one of the best singles of 2012 tho.

Cakes is the fucking truth tho. Just a technically solid rapper, funny, and good club friendly beat selection.

-edit- checking out Katz's last mixtape...still not super impressed with him as an MC, but he seems to make it work for him (and he's got a solid commanding voice)

is dope off that katz's mixtape
2809485, Le1f is okay with me
Posted by johnbook, Sat Jun-01-13 10:27 AM
When I saw his video for the first time, I thought WHOA, what is this? His new video looks like it was done in a cross between a gym and a sex club a la Plato's Retreat, but the song is nice. I guess it's a bit like queer punk, either you accept/tolerate it, or reject it. It's like discovering that a band like Pansy Division covered "Jack U Off". You think "hey, I liked the song originally, let's see how it can be twisted."

I haven't heard the others, but I've always liked hip-hop that may be different from the "accepted norm", be it Paul Barman or clipping. Bring everyone into the mix.

2809535, Never heard of Cakes before this post
Posted by DolphinTeef, Sat Jun-01-13 04:00 PM
instantly d/led his mixtape after hearing Goodie Goodies tho...FIRE.

been showing Le1f love but like Reg said...he needs to work on his flow. Spa Day is redic

these other dudes i can pass on.

honestly, whenever i see their videos i think about how far hip-hop has come. Of course you'll have a large populace shitting on/ignoring them because they are gay. But the fact that they are getting some attention is dope to me.

I see Cakes getting on a song with Rhi or Nicki and blowing the fuck up. Not sure of any mainstream rappers who'll fuck with dude besides Danny Brown...but someone should.
2809539, you forgot kanye west & a$ap rocky...

2809562, Are you using "queer" as an insult?
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sat Jun-01-13 10:34 PM
Probably so, because I don't know either of them to be openly queer.

Wrong post for that.

2809566, let him cook. don't pay his homophobia no mind

2809542, I think Nicki Minaj fucked shit up

2809563, Can you elaborate?
Posted by Ashley Ayers, Sat Jun-01-13 10:34 PM
2809592, I'm cringing at the word "movement"
Posted by Fructose Soda, Sun Jun-02-13 03:31 AM
Everything has become so macro that whenever people say "movement", it sounds too self-important.
Anyway, Cakes is a fuckin beast, but Mykki Blanco is more razzle-dazzle.
Cakes has the potential crush his competitors, but mainstream-wise, people are usually only accustomed to seeing just 1 representative of an idea/theme.

All these dudes spit and swallow. No homo.

Seriously though...get this shit directly the ruck outta here and I'm not even a little bit homophobic.
2809628, most of them are below average, even by today's standards
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sun Jun-02-13 11:35 AM
2809929, not a factual statement if you've listened to Cake's tape
Posted by DolphinTeef, Mon Jun-03-13 12:17 PM
