Anyone else looking forward to this? I thought it was going to be called Prisoner of Consciousness?

Surprising no one seems to be discussing it. Or maybe people today only talk about album leaks for two days and then move on to find more disposable music.

He's got a new album coming out and people probably still asking him about that Black Star mixtape that's never coming out.

I haven't listened to anything yet. Hoping it will be good since I haven't been feeling his recent stuff too much.

How are you lames gonna blame this on Chief Keef and Waka Flocka?

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17943-talib-kweli-prisoner-of-conscious/

Read deliberately, Prisoner of Conscious isn’t that much less provocative a title in 2013 than Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead was in 2006. We're now a little more than three years removed from Waka's infamous "I'm not into being lyrical" comments, and about two and a half on from Flockaveli, a willfully boneheaded album approaching classic status these days. Talib Kweli, then, isn't cut out for these times. Songs like 1998's "Definition" and 2002's "Get By" still deserve all the adulation they inspire, but there's a reason the 37-year-old founding father of conscious-rap is now acknowledging his own antiquity. So when third song “Turnt Up” shows up on Kweli’s fifth solo album, it's probably right to perceive it as an allegorical jailbreak.

And, unfortunately if predictably, “Turnt Up” marks the beginning of Prisoner’s issues. The song knows what it wants to be but doesn’t have the wherewithal to be it. Its piano-lined, uppercutting pop aims for the radio, but, not even factoring in the club-unfriendliness of Kweli’s nose-pinched delivery, I just can’t imagine it fitting in next to “Fuckin’ Problems” or “Bugatti”. The track might be the only flail at relevancy here, but when guys like Kendrick and Miguel show up-- the former laying down one of his best guest verses of late on “Push Thru”, the latter as seductive as ever with his suitably come-hither-y hook for “Come Here”-- their appearances scan as misguided attempts at lending the album a vaguely populist hue. For a record that doesn’t have a binding identity in the first place, that’s a regrettably fragmenting problem.

As great as the jutting, soul-sampling production of 2002’s Quality was, Kweli’s saving grace has always been his well-intentioned lyricism, not his taste in beats. But Prisoner is marred by weak analogies (“colder than Minnesota,” “buzz like Georgia Tech) and Kweli’s bumpy writerliness (“ornithology” and “onomatopoeia” are just two less-than-melodious words used here), leading this to be his most underwhelming record yet word-for-word. And for every few lines that actually do stand up to some of Kweli’s smarter work (“Black Moses when the mic is on/ That’s why these rappers scatter like roaches when the light is on”), there’s a half-cocked concept, like this one from “Hamster Wheel”: “How she runnin’ the streets but still standin’ still/ She needa get up off the hamster wheel.”

Listening to Prisoner next to something like the new Chance the Rapper tape reveals the record’s biggest, most pervasive dilemma. Where Acid Rap is a seamless convergence of local and post-regional sounds, Prisoner takes on a bunch of things one by one without squeezing the most from any of them. Kweli’s absolutely owned his lane when he’s been committed to it but now he's jumping around from style to style with no destination in sight.

Because I hate when critics say stuff like this:

>The song knows what it wants
>to be but doesn’t have the wherewithal to be it.

But this is what I was worried about:

>Kweli’s absolutely owned his lane when he’s been committed to
>it but now he's jumping around from style to style with no
>destination in sight.

I don't want to put anyone in a box, but I do like having a general idea of what I'm looking to hear. These days I don't really know what to expect from Kweli. I respect an artist having range, but for some reason the way he and Common do it, it always seems forced like "I can make these songs too!"

The Roots style can change for album to album, but there's still and underlining consistency that I feel I can expect from them. Like I don't know what their new stuff will sound like at all, but I know it'll feel like "The Roots" to me, whatever that means. I don't really know what to expect from Common or Kweli these days.
2802425, it's like he's obsessed w/ not being pigeonholed as "that guy"

>But this is what I was worried about:
>
>>Kweli’s absolutely owned his lane when he’s been committed

his early rep was the whiny judgmental hip-hop purist (who, as is still the case, talks a lot about "wack" cats but never ever under any circumstances has the guts to name names)

i think he just is obsessed with not being the guy that he was judged to be when he first came in the game...he desperately doesn't want to be the "backpacker" that all the white kids like

and i don't know him personally so i don't know what's a real reflection (lol) of him as a person, but he just comes across as trying to serve many masters at once with his music, which makes his "old" fans not care and his "new" fans look at him as kind of just a novelty...

plus, he really just comes off as a prick so often it's hard to care...
2802801, You sound old and really, really, mad.

I'd throw it a 3 out of 5.

I think if you cut 2-3 songs off of Eardrum, it would be a masterpiece. Liberation was also great.

But everything since then has been lukewarm. RPM was good, but not great. Admittedly, had it been billed as a Kweli album, I wouldn't have felt so let down by it.

Gutter Rainbows was very meh and Attack the Block was cool for a mixtape.

I'll give this new album a spin because Kweli is one of my all time favs, but I'm worried. I dont understand why an artist this late in his career is so caught up with labels. No artist wants to be told he should stick to a certain lane, but he's one of the best in that lane. Plus he's been able to make some pretty cool pop-rap songs "Get By" "I Try" "Hot Girl" "Soon the New Day" to name a few. This whole thing just feels very contrived, but this is all speculation becasue I haven't heard the album yet.

And I agree with the Common comparisons, but he has yet to put together something together as awful as UMC.

But yes, I do not share the same opinion of the people who have not liked Kweli's past few albums. I have enjoyed most of his material, I think he has a pretty solid catalog. Kweli has only really horribly disapointed me one time: the recent Reflection Eternal album

Kudos for Kweli for keeping at it and not half-assing it like Mos with his music. Unfortunately, he's just not sounding good on most of these songs. He's dropping too many "dad jokes" here (see the Pearl Jam line). Should have cut this down to a decent EP.

Anyway

Is Mos' catelog really better? Or even to meet you half way, is it so much better its not even close?

Because, off the top-

1. Train of Thought
2. Ecstatic
3. Blackstar
4. BOBS
5. Quality
6. Liberation
7. Eardrum
8. New Danger
9. Beautiful Struggle (this would be a lot higher had they trimmed the fat and kept that Killer Mike track)
10. Write About Now
11. RPM

12. True Magic

13. Gutter Rainbows

Maybe its about even, but I definitely don't think its a clear Mos Def victory. And I'm a stan of dude.

I feel like I'm forgetting one or two releases. I was also going to cheat and include that fist Beautiful Struggle mixtape that had some joints on it, but I won't.

I really do think that many people need to drop their grudge of Kweli. So he's a pr!ck online? Aren't most of us??

mos' catalog is better to me bc hes consistentw/ his sound & what hes tryna do...apart from RE, Liberation & Quality (& the beautiful mixtape) i dont see any compelling statements from talib, he makes albums full of songs, not albums in the sense of cohesive projects & WHEN HE DOES notice that there's typically a sidekick involved (Madlib, Mos, HITek, Kanye to an extent on Quality)

its not a grudge fam, i dont know the dude, but in interviews, online AND IN HIS RHYMES he comes across typically as smug, overly critical & dismissive of others and a fence rider not willing to commit to what he professes in his raps...also, he seems like a very smart dude & i feel he genuinely loves his people

Six tracks in and I like what I hear so far. I like Kweli's flexibility over different types of beats.
2803535, I'm liking it so far, but I realized what's been annoying me about him
Posted by Cineno, Wed May-08-13 08:00 AM
I bought it, unheard. I hadn't listened to any singles, leaks, etc. so it's all new to me.

So far I'm liking it. But I have to sit through it some more. I listened at the gym which isn't really a fair listen.

I realized what's been annoying me about him. I feel like no matter my mood, I used to be able to play his stuff and enjoy it.

But now, with his seemingly forced identity/trend hoping, he may make good stuff, but I'm not always in the mood to hear it.

"Quality" had a good balance of what I like from him. Conscious stuff, straight spitting stuff, and a little R&B sounding stuff to balance it out. "Eardrum" too to an extent.

That's not a knock on his current output, just my personal tastes. Coming off a bad break up I'm not trying to hear all his R&B stuff right now lol.

It's like when you're chasing styles, you end up doing too much, and your music becomes disposable because it's only relevant to certain situations.

For example, I can like club music when I'm in a club. But I don't listen to the radio because when I'm not in a club I don't want to hear that.

If I felt like dancing, some of his recent stuff would be dope. But when I just have on my headphones walking around NYC, I'm looking for something I can relate to which he used to make more of.

Again, that doesn't mean his recent stuff isn't good. I'm just realizing it's not always for me at this point in my life. His older stuff I felt like I could throw on no matter what I was doing. Still one of my favorite MCs though.

Didn't really the last four tracks at all. A lot of the stuff before that was pretty damn good. Overall, not as good as Gutter Rainbows, and probably "Eardrum." But certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
2805747, this post got weird

Love the RZA joint. Might have been even better if he cut a track or two, thought it dragged towards the end, but overall it's a good listen.

Also gotta give him props for the album booklet, that thing is THICK.
2807672, tbh i like gutter rainbows better

And I must say that I'm disappointed at the reception that its receiving on here.

I was looking at the "1st half" post and some of the bullshit people were posting in there was sad while this album was noticeably absent.

The only bad song on here is Upper Echelon.

I really don't see Kweli trying to please everyone at all. This is a very soulful hip-hop album and it doesn't accomplish that by sampling soul records.

The album starts off strong as hell from 1-5.

Push Thru with Knedrick is dope.

Hamster Wheel is excellent.

RZA comes through hard.

The Nelly collabo is nice.

The Seu Jorge feature is perfectly sequenced.

And the closer is an actual closer.

Production is right throughout.

Songwriting is strong but I do get the complaint about some of the borderline wack punch lines that Kweli and Com are know to do at times.

The packaging of the album is real nice as well. I'm assuming most people didn't purchase the physical album though. Much more thorough piece of art than Gutter Rainbows was.

I will say this though, this post was just yet another disaster due to the completely ignorant OE who leads a sad existence of a life.
2815166, And hey yo Talib!

If you want to do a remix to that Miguel joint, I've had a verse that I've been waiting to use that couldn't line up any better!!

I know it will never happen but shit, throwing it out there lol.
