2759692, what do yall think about a 'LikeWaterForChoc pt2'&Quest bring in madlib?
Posted by judono, Thu Nov-29-12 02:21 PM
What would y'all think of a new Common album. Like water for chocolate part 2. And quest brings in madlib in place of jay dee (rest in peace). For 2013..

?
2759700, meh

2759708, I think you're about 10 years late.
Posted by bentagain, Thu Nov-29-12 03:25 PM
Regardless, I would love to see some variation of the soulquarians

I would vote for MadLib to replace Dilla

but you also need to replace D'Angelo

John Legend?

IDK

it would have been awesome if they could have done an album before Common went the route of BE

but it is what it is

I'd definitely check for a Soulquarians produced album

whether it's with Common or not

probably better with a younger MC, IMO

2759892, RE: I think you're about 10 years late.
Posted by spidey, Fri Nov-30-12 02:09 AM
...on the John Legend thing replacing D, not even close....Mr. "Legend" ain't got the natural talent...duke reeks of contrived industry planning....
2760066, RE: I think you're about 10 years late.
Posted by judono, Fri Nov-30-12 03:18 PM
I feel u... that said...Who could be the new, younger, replacement mc? That would be a feasible and realistic possibility and who could hold down the majority of the album on the vocs?...
2760072, I only really check for 2 youngins
Posted by bentagain, Fri Nov-30-12 03:54 PM
Kendrick and Krit
2760228, i think i have a Golden Ticket idea below. i really think this will win
Posted by judono, Sat Dec-01-12 09:30 AM
if questlove / madlib / poyser / karriem riggins / and those engineers.. wanted to give a younger MC ... who has been recognized on a smaller scope for their talents---- and give them 60 days of studio sessions and the LikeWaterForChocolate treatment.... wait for it.....

on the really really. I'm saying put Blu in . and replace D'Angelo with Miguel. this will win.

60 days worth of full day studio sessions. or however many Common had for LWFC.

stay with me...

madlib & quest in the A room. Karriem Riggins in the B room. and everybody visiting each other in each room to see what the beats are sounding like and collaborating back and forth in both rooms.

if you want to break a new(er) young(er) artist to a more mainstream , commercially viable audience, for the next generation, and give them the same energy and push Common got on LikeWater, Blu is the MC, and Madlib is the Jay Dee replacement (RIP).

blu has already gained a following, paid dues, earned respect, garnered the major label attention, and now is ready to settle down with a strong , next level team, and make that LikeWaterForChocolate type of classic. Common already had his ressurection and one day it'll all make sense albums (both classics in their days), but that LikeWater was the 1. blu already had his below the heavens and a bunch of other shit. Now he is , this is my opinion, blu is ready for that Quest/Madlib/Karriem/Poyser/and those engineers and additional musicians.

this will help all the aforementioned artists named: make a new classic - - break a new, young MC and propel him to the forefront (j cole is getting his, Lupe is getting his, wale is getting his , kendrick is getting his) Why Wouldnt these guys want to take Blu to that Level on the LIKE WATER Vibe, the same way they did with Common?

Think about it.

and instead of D'Angelo --- since he is MIA---- Bring in MIGUEL, who's already down with Blu and has a HUUUUUGE fuckin buzz.

to me it's a genius idea, and i'm feeling like hiphop needs it. it'll take everyone to a new classic level in 2013 the same way Like Water took Common & the team to a new classic level back in 2000.
2760238, I could agree with Blu
Posted by bentagain, Sat Dec-01-12 10:55 AM
I was big on him

but I stopped checking for him after below the heavens

his output was too inconsistent

but I did love what he did on How I Got Over

I thought he sounded real comfortable in front of the band

Miguel...NAH

I don't think the D parallel is just about singing

I got an idea

how about Esperanza?
2760258, RE: I could agree with Blu
Posted by judono, Sat Dec-01-12 12:51 PM
i dont check tuff for blu like i was from the '06 - '09 either. but with the line up above, everybody would be in a different headroom. i'd still roll with miguel because he is the next/new/now on an alt R&B especially. he still hasn't made his best album yet either. both his solo's had a handful of those Classic classic songs.. but i think he can make a whole album full of those.

Not sure if I agree, but just adding to the convo.

J Cole is boring and run of the mill as fuck.

Common in his day had *some* personality and interesting rhymes.
2761235, some? resurrection, one day itll all make sense, & like water4choc

2761240, I was being kind.
Posted by Brew, Wed Dec-05-12 11:45 AM
I'm one of the biggest Common fans on here.

My point was that he doesn't have the personality of, say, a Busta Rhymes or Snoop, but he's not at the J Cole (boring) end of the spectrum either. So the Common/Cole comparison is an awful one. Not only is Cole not even remotely close to Common's lyrical level but he also is bland as shit.

Posted by CaliFornicater, Thu Nov-29-12 03:51 PM
lib is too lo-fi for that type of sound imo.
2759789, has you know who even ever acknowledge madlib's existence?
Posted by bavid dammer, Thu Nov-29-12 08:00 PM
most people IN the mainstream pretend madlib is a myth or something.
he very much is today what jay dee was while alive, people KNEW he existed but were afraid to say his name because then you've evoked a greater talent than your own for the world to discover.
all the posthumous worshiping of dilla after his death is like a proverbial sigh of relief from a lot of these producers and industry rats who treated jay dee like a scrub and relegated him to indie records that only a few thousand people even paid money for during the last 3 years of his career/life.
the worst career decision (aside from parting with tip) that jay dee ever made was being affiliated with the "soul aquarians" his career completely took a nose dive afterward.
2759862, figured it was known that Madlib helped Ye with Cruel Summer
Posted by spew120, Thu Nov-29-12 11:21 PM
Dave and Ansel Collins, Marcos Valle, Super Beagle... c'mon now.
2759866, if that was true i guess he coat-checked everything he's known for.
Posted by bavid dammer, Thu Nov-29-12 11:32 PM
so is it even madlib?
2759930, I don't think he did hands-on production
Posted by spew120, Fri Nov-30-12 07:37 AM
But I think Ye found a lot of these samples from Madlib's vaults, and got his 'blessings' to do so. Remember that meeting they had two summers ago? I think Ye put a picture on his blog or something.

I actually agree with this though. And I felt the same thing about Jay Dee when he was alive as well, at least after LWFC (that's when I converted)
2760062, yep
Posted by SP1200, Fri Nov-30-12 03:09 PM
that part I agree with. Not the Soulquarians part tho because no one else on major labels was giving Dilla the time of day, so why not.

not to mention Common in 2012.

Get someone like Waajeed, Black Milk, or even Georgia A. Muldrow to collaborate with The Roots and it's a bet; but from the looks of it, I doubt that Common will go back to do something on that level again but if he decided to get production with No I.D. then maybe it's still a chance will do something with The Roots again.

2760506, Black Milk would be the best choice I wonder what he could do

Id like to hear a qtip verse on the record. But madlib is the essential jay dee replacement. Put lib in a studio next to quest, james poyser, and karriem riggins, and questloves engineers and its a wrap

2760219, You right, Madlib by himself is a horrible producer.
Posted by Brotha Sun, Sat Dec-01-12 08:48 AM
But put him in the studio with artists that can help him focus and he'd probably make dope shit.
2760222, ?
Posted by judono, Sat Dec-01-12 09:09 AM
madlib is the best producer from the 2000's. put it in the hiphop history books. from 2000 - 2010. ranked #1 best producer of that generation with the biggest impact in hiphop. not mainstream rap. talking indie hiphop. people like to front on madlib because he became over-saturated with all the beat albums and shit, but that's all that is , is frontin
2760105, RE: what do yall think about a 'LikeWaterForChoc pt2'&Quest bring in madlib?
Posted by citizen, Fri Nov-30-12 06:01 PM
I would fucking LOVE to hear that. LWFC is my favorite common album hands down. some of the ummah/soulquarians best work imo.
2760173, thats not the ummah in any way shape or form

and not to Com working with Madlib or Madlib workin w/Questo & Poyser on some stuff for Com specifically, but it's corny to try & make it "LWFC2" or "replace Dilla w/Lib".

sequel's just for the sake of doing them off of the name is a corny concept.

2761098, So You Think Common Lost His Direction?
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue Dec-04-12 11:11 PM
I do think Common hasn't been rhyming about the same things since "Be" ("Finding Forever" was proof of that) but it seems like ever since his acting career jumped off he's been declining in the lyrical department subject wise.

If somebody like Mr.15 basically makes Common sit back and just focus on writing while they choose the music and what songs make the album and sequence of the songs then he can make another dope album that will have more feeling than the last couple of albums.

"Dreamer/Believer" was good but kind of boring as far as each song having any point to make, it was just him rhyming over good beats; and even though I still love "Electric Circus" he's not in love anymore and I can say we don't need another love album from him either, personally I want more of lyrical "One Day It'll All Make Sense" Common but with the "Like Water For Chocolate" production.

2761104, Yea, Common raps like a eunuch nowadays
Posted by guru0509, Tue Dec-04-12 11:17 PM
I just dont hear it in him anymore..."Be" was the beginning of the end (still a dope album tho)
