2727596, Inspired by Andre on "Sixteen";...what are the worst solos in history?
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon Aug-06-12 02:50 PM
I remember Phonte posting up this funny ass piano solo on a James Brown song before too. I don't know why, but horrible solos on songs are great to me...I can listen to it hundreds of times and still be entertained.

What's some more that y'all can post?
2727601, I'm trying to find that thread where ya'll went to town clowning the solo

can't find it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0ftcHN3PXE&t=3m53s

it's not even that the solo is really bad on its own, but it becomes laughable for the way he threatens to blow our minds with his axe skills and then goes into that bullshit while shouting out some of the best guitarists as if he's matching or even paying tribute to them in any way.

(Let's not even get into how he compares Jerry Wonder's stiff-ass bass playing to Bootsy's)

The whole thing just makes me cringe

Yeah, that's fucking embarrassing. You can hear a dozen different dudes playing at a higher level than that in any random Guitar Center, any random day of the week. It's not bad, it's just very rudimentary.
2727623, HA. I reviewed this album for a site when it dropped & killing this part
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Aug-06-12 04:35 PM
for the exact same reasons you named.
2727643, at least he's in tune, that's all I'll say

Dre was already playing guitar on Idlewild and TLB according to the credits, surely he was just really drunk and/or high in the studio that day?

I'm usually a big fan of Tom Morello's solos, but this one sounds like the prolonged torture of a cat...

It starts at the 2min 30 mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1mexmK6bDY

It's still a pretty good song though
2727690, I like that one.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Mon Aug-06-12 08:28 PM
2727919, he made that cat sound good, though.

2727776, That Andre solo is bad on a level rarely seen on pro recordings.
Posted by Stringer Bell, Mon Aug-06-12 10:34 PM
I can't think of a worse solo really, on a major label production.
2727852, who was in the studio and said 'yeah, keep THAT take'?

“The other dude after me didn’t help my case. It was just like…crazy nigga factory going on.”
Dre makes no apologies for his own eccentricities. “I was young, and searching, trying to find myself,” he says. “Never did.”-- Andre B
2727858, It's gotta be in Andre's deal
Posted by mrshow, Tue Aug-07-12 04:13 AM
100 G's and whatever I do, you gotta use it.
2727915, why does the guitar sound seriously out of tune?
Posted by rdhull, Tue Aug-07-12 10:04 AM

2728208, yup , man I didnt even know the guitar part existed til this post
Posted by Amritsar, Tue Aug-07-12 05:36 PM
I had always just cut the song off after 3 Stack's verse in fear of Ross coming back lol
2727864, Rick Ross just proved how far removed the black man is from the guitar
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Tue Aug-07-12 06:15 AM
No way a man with good hearing would let that ride on a proper release. You wanna throw that on a free mixtape, cool but Jimi himself couldn't sell me on that horrible solo. I would've been like "word, that's how you feel about me, Jimi?"
2727889, smh I kinda agree. White people, please help ensure this never happens
Posted by micMajestic, Tue Aug-07-12 08:48 AM

again. If you have to review this album or song, or even if you are just talking casually about the song, please make it a point to mention how awful this guitar solo is.
2728534, or how far they've moved from it in popular music

Prince wept
2728209, James Brown cracks me up on the organ.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Aug-07-12 05:38 PM
i wish i knew song titles so i could post links to video.

but damn i've heard some organ solos on JB's records and James Brown records that just...no, James. LOL

2728210, I think 'Dirty Harri' is a memorable one.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Aug-07-12 05:40 PM
EDIT: Listening to it now, I'm actually not mad

http://youtu.be/jbWTYhTDLlk

but as has been said above, "at least it's in tune"

That Andre solo is like 9/11... It's changed everything. Solos I used to call bad, I can't even call them bad no more
2728213, yeah.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Aug-07-12 05:44 PM
it just goes on. i remember that one after looking it up.

and then i found this on discogs:

and now I must have it.
2728512, i have that one...LOL.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Wed Aug-08-12 12:33 PM
can't remember what it sounds like though.
2728219, He was hit-and-miss
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Tue Aug-07-12 05:52 PM
He obviously didn't have much technique but his note-choices were really nice even if he had a tendency to play some really off-notes at times which I suspect had more to do with lack of technique than bad intentions. He kills it on "Funky Drummer" for example; that's some cool solos there IMO. For some bad examples, I can't come up with any off the top of my head but the "Sho' is funky down here"-album (which was allegedly his attempt at psychedelic rock) has some very awkward stuff which is sort-of predictable I guess-he probably wanted to "wild out" in that context...
2728229, i agree.

Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Aug-07-12 05:56 PM
Do the little keyboard noodlings in the breaks even count as "solos"?

http://youtu.be/R8AOAap6_k4

Whatever... they're pretty uninspired.

Plus, I'll admit to just looking for an excuse to post this vid because I never fail to be amused by the over-enthusiasm of the bass player and the coked-up, mega-mulleted engineer.

Also: Linda is so fucking cool.
2728515, lmao...this is hilarious. that "solo" is so unnecessary.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Wed Aug-08-12 12:37 PM

2728517, the song is Eddie Murphy soundtrack music at its finest! lol.

2728862, That song (Teardrops) was huge in sweden...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Aug-09-12 06:01 AM
They still play it regularly on the radio. Anyway, that's the type of non-Prince/MJ "R&B" that crossed over here. I always liked the song BTW, great melody even if it is repetitious and I dig how the girl sings it
2728984, yeah, that is a great, quintessentially 80s R&B song.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Thu Aug-09-12 11:52 AM
I love it
2728663, Never saw this before! Lol-love it.

Play the Guitar HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAH
2728617, I don't understand why he didn't put that song on the album
Posted by Menphyel7, Wed Aug-08-12 04:36 PM
and now he shooting a video for it? wtf? that easily would have been the best song on the album and who wastes an Andre feature..I mean Andre completely blew him out the water but damn.
2728612, George Harrison has some bad ones on some early records...
Posted by The Analyst, Wed Aug-08-12 04:32 PM
I'll Follow the Sun comes to mind.

His lead playing was so suspect that McCartney played the majority of the lead parts on Sgt. Pepper and even on George's own Taxman.

But he also had some really great ones later on (Something, for one) that more than make up for it.
2728859, Can I just say just about anything done by Kerry King
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Thu Aug-09-12 05:25 AM
Shit is almost always total off key nonsense. But I still bump some Slayer though.
2728861, See, I always liked his solos...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Aug-09-12 05:58 AM
On their own, they are tuneless wankery with no redeeming musical values but in the context of Slayer's often very tight and rigid songs, they give a sense of craziness and spontaniety to the proceedings. I also like the way he and Hanneman shifted the Judas Priest- alternating solos approach to the left while still retaining the dynamic. Basically, in JP, Glenn Tipton played the melodic, classical-inspired solos wheras KK Downing spazzed out with the whammy-bar and played more in a post-Hendrix (minus the blues) style. In Slayer, Hanneman pretty much played like Downing and King like a mongoloid but you still get the contrast.

I should also mention though that those tuneless solos became a cliche in more extreme thrash and early death metal as well so the concept has pretty much been played out for 20 years or so; it doesn't have much left to offer and most lead-guitarists in the at least more notable metal-bands seem to have abandoned it, at least as the dominate lead-style.
2728973, Not hatin' but
Posted by rtoriq, Thu Aug-09-12 11:34 AM
...Robin Thicke's last track on his most recent album Love After War, the track called "What Would I Be", he has a very short piano solo that i was unimpressed by. Of course i am not the best on the keys nor are some other artists i look up to (like Gil Scott-Heron), but still unimpressed. Probably because i was expecting some freal down home blues slash gospel jammin on the track. Still a nice song.
