2704783, Your Favorite Rendition of "World is a Ghetto" | Classics w/ 3+ versions

War (Original)
slow, sorrowful, haunting blues harmonica, romping chorus

Malo
unfortunately this live version from 2006 doesn't really do the original recording justice but in case you've heard it, it's faster, more Santana-esque with clear warm-toned guitar and latin percussion

BJ the Chicago Kid w/ Battlecat & Kendrick Lamar
slick lil sample usage in the beginning, great melodic interpolation of original chorus, beat and live instrumentation is of course incredible

To add to the discussion
What classic tunes can you name off the top with a similar variance of covers spanning an equally large period of time with as much variation in sound as this example?

Being that War was a Los Angeles band that was as much a part of the Black as Chicano communities this lent itself to being covered in a wider variety of styles and settings. Of course modern R&B often gives nods to the classics of yesteryear but rarely with this much success in retaining original spirit while instilling completely modern style.

the beginning may sound familiar to some in here

and a lot of folks know about Ahmad Jamal's

on Youtube, I found a cool take on it by Mike Phillips (saxophonist) he played live. He rolled it in to Jay-Z's "Show Me Whatcha Got"/"Darkest Light".
2704789, nice I knew there were more that I forgot / was not aware of

i even like the interpolation mos def threw into the unreleased black jack johnson song "ghetto" they used to perform live
2704793, Damn I forgot there was this other latin version of it too. Starts with

just the bassline and the congas and then the clave / cowbell comes in and it's really smooth. even kinda loungey

I got in on wax too I can't believe I forgot it.

I want to say it's off Fania or something but it's that same type of Latin Jazz - Funk fusion that you would find on that label
2704797, i always liked this version

so iconic

(or maybe just was so heavily referenced in the 90's i.e. Dead Presidents)

That's the type of spread I'm talking though

It's only officially a classic if it's inter-genre AND inter-generation

LOL
2704863, ha you know what? that would be cool thrown in a live set
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu May-31-12 11:29 AM
just off the familiarity of the song w/ the bizarreness of tone in this cover

It's not bad musically but just... the "if you see me walking down the street and I start to cry, it's time we meet WALK ON BYYEE" like with no transition and with a fanciful air

it's just hilarious
2704979, how about
