2700742, Are Above the Law unsung?
Posted by go mack, Sat May-19-12 12:06 PM
It seems most people under 30 don't know anything about the group. One of my favorite groups ever with 5 solid albums before they became completely irrelevant. Do they have any classic albums or just really good albums? I'd argue for Livin Like Hustlers is classic and Uncle Sam's Curse borderline. The tommy boy albums shouldn't be slept on either but after that they just couldn't keep with the times and everything seemed pretty stale altho Hutch's first solo album was pretty solid.

How do you feel of Cold 187um as a rapper and producer? KMG? Will they ever get their due as pioneers of the west coast sound along with Dre or will they remain forgotten for the most part with the young audience?
2700751, I think so...
Posted by ry 213, Sat May-19-12 12:56 PM
I agree with what you said. Living Like Hustlers is definitely a classic, and the group is so underrated. Time Will Reveal is actually my favorite of their albums. They had a 5 album run that is almost unmatchable in hip hop.

You cant overlook 187's production work either. Kokane Funk Upon a Rhyme is considered a near classic, plus all the tracks he produced for Eazy, Ren, Frost, Kam, etc...

Im not going to get into how Dre stole his sound from ATL...
2701502, Good, you shouldn't waste your time.

2700758, definitely, I'm 35 & know em but if I hadn't moved to LA awhile back

I very well could have basically forgotten about them by now.

I kinda had a hard time as a kid not feeling like that wave right after NWA (CMW, ATL, even to a lesser degree Quik for a brief second) wasn't sorta riding the wave that Ice-T but especially NWA had carved out (and I still don't buy the claims that ATL somehow 'created g-funk' when Dre helmed the first record and to me they didn't fully embrace that sound until after Muggs & NWA's last album) but I've come to understand them more along with the nuances that separate ATL from NWA as well as Pomona from Compton.

Uncle Sam's Curse is my favorite even though it's probably less 'important' than Livin Like Hustlers. Love both though.

Can't remember if Black Mafia Life came before or after The Chronic, think it might have been slightly after but could be that Dre heard Hutch working on the beats.

2701486, Black Mafia Life definitely came out after but to me Dre had been

making records in that vein dating back to the time he was still in NWA with 'Alwayz Into Something' & Muggs was messing with similar whiny/high-synthisizer sounds on Cypress Hill's debut from that same year (both predating ATL's record by a good year and a half maybe two).
2701055, My boy from Pomona is 28 and said they got more love out there

the definition of them.

and strangely enough when I became really aware of them... it was through a STANLEY CLARKE/GEORGE DUKE record of all things.

Cold 187um is as good as any of them. I don't think people really started paying attention until BLACK MAFIA LIFE hit.

2700812, see to me the peak of their 'attention' was Livin Like Hustlers

Untouchable & Murder Rap both got a lot of run on the main rap video programs.

After that back east they became less & less visible from my memory.
2700898, that was the peak, but I think 'V.S.O.P.' was their first widespread hit
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun May-20-12 07:55 AM
at least that was the first video of theirs I remember seeing multiple times.

They had been out a couple years at that point.
2701491, you don't remember these joints on 'Yo' being show multiple times:

^^^LOL, I guess Santa Monica looks more like the backdrop for an 'untouchable' boss than Pomona. Now that I wouldn't have been able to differentiate back when I was making 'VHS Pause Tapes' after school with rap videos.

Anyway, I remember these videos from back then, that Ruthless stamp of approval, Dre production & Eazy cameo was pretty huge in 1990 (particularly since we were in a holding pattern with no NWA album in 89/90).
2701597, wow, I haven't seen that in like.... 10 000 years.

this video, I remember. But I only saw it once.

"Murder Rap" I never caught the video, but that song was one of my favorites by them. The good old days of NOISE rap!

man, the dramatic Dukey keys-intro had me hooked already when i had bought a fresh album copy from the store when it was just out.

and one of Rahsaan's first recordings, about 5 or 6 years before his debut.

(in response to reply #6)
2700996, LOL, yeah! he looks hilariously young in that video.

that live version from Arsenio is fire, BTW.

lolz, yup... and the video quality surprised me as well
2700960, RE: definitely.

kind of wish I would have made this post before Old Pro made his departure. Know he was a big fan, says a lot for someone that genuinely doesn't care much for hiphop lol He could have probably added a lot to this post tho.

Oh wow, sorry to read he left. I'm checking here on the board occasionally so i wasn't aware of that. Had some cool chats with him before and enjoyed his mixes and tributes on his radio station, such as for Cameo, Slave, The Time, and iirc also a mix from Zapp.
2701071, RE: definitely.
Posted by go mack, Sun May-20-12 06:08 PM
he may be back someday and may still lurk, board was taking too much time away from his life which is understandable

ah okay, i see
thanks again for the feedback
2700829, They put the U in Unsung
Posted by Record Playa, Sat May-19-12 07:15 PM
They had a solid run.

5 solid albums

1 GREAT album. Uncle Sam's Curse is a GREAT album.. Many artist cant claim a great album.

Big Hutch Cold 187 is the master of G Funk.
NOT Warren G or Dr Dre..
2700901, from the late 80s to the late 90s they had one hell of a run
Posted by Hellyeah, Sun May-20-12 08:48 AM
then they completely disappeared

damn shame...they were ahead of their time
2700915, Most of the group got locked up...
Posted by ry 213, Sun May-20-12 10:18 AM
I know Cold 187 was locked up for a few years and only recently got out. You can tell prison really fucked him up because he doesnt have the same musical talent any more. His voice is harsh and angry and not smooth like it used to be. He has some new music coming out on Insane Clown Posse's label Psychopathic Records, and its tailored towards their fan base. Its a damn shame, if he could make music for his old fan base and stick to the smooth g funk he could make enough money off touring to make a decent living...
2700940, I love Livin Like Hustlers and Black Mafia Life
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sun May-20-12 12:01 PM
Uncle Sam's Curse had some very strong cuts but was a bit of a drop off from the previous two albums IMO. I stopped checking for them after that. What did I miss?
2700957, RE: I love Livin Like Hustlers and Black Mafia Life
Posted by go mack, Sun May-20-12 01:17 PM
The Tommy Boy albums Time Will Reveal and Legends are definately worth checking out, anything after that nah.

Here's one of my fav cuts from Legends:

2701081, You missed a damn solid album "Legends"
Posted by Record Playa, Sun May-20-12 06:36 PM
Hutch music and production had more original instruments, less sampling and they matured but still kept it OG.

It was grown folks and gangster all at once.
2701053, They are, especially in L.A.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun May-20-12 05:17 PM
For people under 30, I'd even say 35, they just don't get love from most folks here...I feel like they never really appealed to the youth in the way that DPG/NWA, Quik, and all of them did.

I rarely even heard "Black Superman" on the radio from like 93 on.
2701060, Black Superman is one of the most gangsta beats of all-time!
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sun May-20-12 05:33 PM
2701489, that song is epic!
Posted by ABROCK33, Mon May-21-12 05:22 PM
.
2701493, They played Black Superman on KDAY a lot when I first got out here in 04
Posted by Bombastic, Mon May-21-12 05:33 PM
at least Julio G did, everytime he'd say 'we're gonna take it to Pomona' I'd get excited on my ride home knowing that was coming.
2701612, as someone who just got hipped to them via my westcoast roadtrip post
Posted by fontgangsta, Mon May-21-12 11:01 PM
ID SAY YA
i was doing a skim of "livin like hustlers" afer it got reccomended like "how have i never heard this before"
and it seems like half their shit isn't even on itunes for whatever reason.
so ya, def. flying under the radar
2702610, This thread made me pull out Black Mafia Life again
Posted by Record Playa, Wed May-23-12 07:03 PM
2702613, Murder Rap was an epic cut back then
Posted by Yank, Wed May-23-12 07:20 PM

2702635, hell yeah (c) dead prez fucking right (c) wheel chair jimmy
