When it comes to popular moog themed albums, Walter/Wendy marked new ground with that album, about ten years ago I found "Switched On Beethoven" which is dope as well.

2694754, has synths, but i wouldn't consider this a synth album.

2694779, Why not? The synths were very prominent in the sound

Listen to "Chameleon" and tell me that's not what makes the song.
2695048, as far as Herbie and synths go... this is a start

(ditto for Sextant and Crossings)

but I'd probably put on something (strangely enough) like DEDICATION (with songs like "Nobu" and the weird take on "Cantaloupe Island" that is much unlike much other takes), SECRETS, or again... MR. HANDS (for "Spiraling Prism" and "Just Around The Corner").

HEADHUNTERS was the first real album where Herbie started to apply his own voice to the synth.

I'd say Substance paints an overall better picture of their influence, but I understand not wanting to name a compilation.

2695059, Useless bonus-trivia re:Subotnick
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri May-04-12 07:02 PM
When I was in my mid-teens, the main library started to sell their least borrowed vinyl albums for like $1 each since cd's were taking over. They sold Subotnick's '71 "Sidewinder"-LP and I bought it just because it looked cool. It was pretty damn close to being near mint which is VERY rare when it comes to records in libraries-I suspect noone had ever borrowed it. Unfortunately, it's not worth anything I guess since there is this big Gothenburg Library plastic shit stamped on the cover which I of course had to rip off and it became ruined in the process, oh well...

Anyway, really cool stuff IMO even if I suspect many people would just call it noise and I just love the sounds those old synths have. There are pictures of the synths on the cover and it looks like a factory or something-they are SO big! That album is recommended...

Phaedra would be my pick. But pretty much anything from the 70's is good.

Probably not a "cool" choice in hindsight, but Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells seems pretty influential.

And Kraftwerk, obviously.

It's hard to pick one of their albums but that's a good choice.
2695040, Have you heard Mike's sister Sally?
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri May-04-12 06:30 PM
I grew up thinking she was a big star since my mom played her album "Celebration" all the time but later found out that it was only a big record in sweden and germany. Anyway, she was a nice and somewhat new agey folk-pop singer who for some reason started to mix that vibe with disco on the aforementioned album and possibly before that. Check this out:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWn2kEs64yA

I have some investigating to do.

Thanks.

his little suite called "El Bozo" dominated a summer of mine years ago.

also on the RTF side of things, I'd definitely go w/The ROMANTIC WARRIOR. Words can't describe how geeked I was to hear the united RTF play "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant" live (ABROCK33, weren't you there for that?)
2695054, The Moog Cookbook, self-titled album
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri May-04-12 06:51 PM
it's from 1996, yet some of those tracks sound like they could have been recorded some 20 years prior. It can be a little "gamey" and at times borderline schmaltz. But I love what they did with Green Day's song.

I became familiar with this in the oddest way, Top Gear in its pre-2002 format used one of its songs as background music...
2695089, The System - Sweat and Dont Disturb This Groove?

2695677, I dunno if I mentioned them
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon May-07-12 10:38 AM
but yes, the System (and the acts they produced in the '80s) are very good examples of synth work in the period.

I got everyone of those albums (some I own 2 to 3 copies of too), everyone of them is great to listen to, what got me into Isao Tomita "The Planets" album, and since then I've been buying his albums (don't have his mid-80's to the 2000's ones yet but I will) but it's hard to say which one I like the most cause they're all good.

Because it's their most "new wave" sounding album (intentionally, most likely). It's like they realized their own influence and decided to imitate the imitators. Brilliant,

That album is amazing, he did some amazing things with synths on that album. I mean for it to rock that much with no guitars is quite a feat. Plus he was one of the first ppl to program their own

...that one along with some obvious classics which have already been mentioned by Stevie Wonder (SEVERAL from that killer 70's run), Prince (1999)...

I'd also like to throw in a Parliament /Funkadelic record, though i'm not sure which one specifically yet...

as for the Flat Earth...not sure if folks will consider it a 'synth' album per-se'...and the thing i think i like about it actually is its seamless combination/merging of synth use WITH 'natural' instrument use...

..i think thats what i like about ALL of the ones above...they have the 'right' ratio of synth/natural mix...

as for mr Dolby, dont sleep....'Flat Earth' and 'Aliens Ate My Buick' are both still in regular rotation on my ipod...very creative interesting stuff that have been underrated in my opinion...
