2681924, so who says Michael Jackson wasn't the Greatest R&B Singer?
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Apr-04-12 10:10 PM
i mean him as a kid murks alot of grown folks period. the man was soulful from 69-thriller with ease and had moments post.

acting like his voice ain't influenced cats that came after him.

ain't too many acts young, middle age or old seeing MJ vocally especially from 76-80.

who's loving you alone vocal perfomance when he was a kid can go toe to toe with anybody period.

i'm talking purely range, soul and depth and pre king of pop which in itself is a whole different chapter.

his lead vocal range, background harmony can hang.

don't stop till you get enough

you can't win

show you the way to go

range, range, range

turkeys can't tell me nothing always downplaying MJ

I think El Debarge, Tevin Campbell and Mic Murphy from the System are better singers.
2681949, r kelly

Curious... MJ's 'Get On the Floor' or the Jacksons 'Everybody' Which do you like more? The latter is pulled from the first one. Listened to Triumph recently and this time 'Everybody' really caught me. Don't know which song I like more now.

They are similar in that the choruses are related but yet you'll hear that they are different. His vocals on 'Everybody' are !!!
2682010, vocally hes not even in the top 5
Posted by Binlahab, Thu Apr-05-12 07:38 AM
i love MJ but singing wise

1) donny
1a) luther
2) al green
3) johnny taylor
4) lead singer from the spinners
5) marvin

nope.

no MJ. sorry.

what he lacked in vocals he made up for in sheer entertainment

so he's still the GOAT

2682012, I could name at least 10 better singers from the 80's alone
Posted by kysersozey, Thu Apr-05-12 07:51 AM
2682050, no, you couldn't.
Posted by ninjitsu, Thu Apr-05-12 09:51 AM
MJ is seriously underrated as a singer.
2682371, Luther, Jeffrey Osborne, Freddie, Peabo, Rick James, Charlie Wilson
Posted by kysersozey, Thu Apr-05-12 07:25 PM
Prince, El debarge, Will Downings(even though he's late 80's),
David Peaston

that's just off the top... all debatable tho. MJ def had them all beat
in terms of total package, but purely voice, I'd take any of these. In
fact, if MJ had to sing their songs he'd prolly flop(tho he could pull
off any el debarge song with relative ease)
2682393, turkey you is on that Gator from "Jungle fever" Double Crack
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Apr-05-12 08:41 PM
and doing the soul train dance with halle Berry pipe if you believe half of that.

2682409, michael has never been classified as a great singer... is he the GOAT
Posted by kysersozey, Thu Apr-05-12 10:07 PM
as a package, yes

singer... no. never has, never will be, and this will no longer
be discussed.
2682436, yes he was called Great as a singer
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Fri Apr-06-12 12:20 AM
vocal genius and all those acts he influenced or was I just dreaming it all up? you is buggin for real
2683028, you said the greatest R&B singer... he is not that, and has never been
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 10:54 AM
considered that
2683047, maybe not to you, however there are quite a few folks who feel
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sat Apr-07-12 11:27 AM
otherwise. and usually your takes are cool or close to on point, however that list you put up set you up to get clowned on Comeic view in a real way. you said David Peaston??? I dug David (Kirby Puckett looking) Peaston but naw he wasn't in that league of singers.

you might as well have said Phil Perry?? you still trippin, but cool usually peace
2683079, fam, I laughed when I was making that list... i was fixing to put George
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 12:26 PM
Michaels on there but that woulda blew my cover.

All I'm saying is MJ has never been mentioned with Marvin, Donny,
Stevie, Luther, Sam, Al etc and now everybody is jerking off with a glittered
glove. Mofos in here gon' start saying Janet is up there with Whitney's
voice in a minute.

I challenge anybody to show me an article that ranks MJ's voice in the
top 5 or 10 of all time singers in R&B/soul.
2683089, You're out of your mind.
Posted by bski, Sat Apr-07-12 12:53 PM
Could you picture Luther or Ingram singing 'The Way You Make Me Feel'?

Do you really think they could pull that off?

Michael was a MONSTER singer. And let's not even bring up his harmony/arranging work.

Fuck that Entertainer shit.

the 6 people in this post

MJ will always be the King of Pop... as a total package he is unmatched,
but all this he was the greatest R&B---> singer... SINGER!!!!? sheeeeit
2683111, You give credence to "lists"??

You need to read someone else's opinion in print to to agree with it?

Use your ears, homie!

I give a fuck about who the greatest is. My point is fuck all that dancing and other shit.

Motherfuckers weren't buying Mike's records to hear him dance on em.

That dude was an INCREDIBLE singer. That aspect of his many talents is taken for granted for some reason.

2683303, that turkey don't hear ya
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Apr-08-12 02:51 AM
we bought MJ albums because the Brother could SANG!!!!!!!!! that harmony and the way he did his thing was purely Magic.

and all the entertainment, etc.. stuff mind you was pretty much two decades into his career. folks was listening and feeling his voice from 69-82 before MTV and other outlets it was the voice and the songs we Loved.

that turkey ain't hearing us though.
2683492, Exactly. I didn't have Cable & MTV til like 89 or some shit
Posted by bski, Sun Apr-08-12 11:54 PM
But even as a kid i would listen to the singles from Thriller on the radio and think-holy shit, what a sound this cat has!! That voice & approach still amazes me today. The brother was truly special.

On what planet is MJ not considered a great singer?
Listen to Got to be there, push me away, whos lovin you, etc, etc.
One of MJs greatest strengths as a vocalist imo is that he was very versatile, he wasnt limited to just r&b.
Id love to hear a lot of those artists try to sing something like Morphine or Give in to me
2683032, yeah, bcuz MJ has always been called the King of R&B, and when
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 10:56 AM
the greatest soul singers are listed, MJ is always in the top 5 right?
2683035, knew u were set up for failure w/that claim but damn thats a shitty list
Posted by Bombastic, Sat Apr-07-12 11:06 AM
Rick James was a better *singer* than Mike?

Who in their right mind would rather hear Peabo Bryson sing anything than MJ?

Jeffrey Osborne? FOH.

It's like you tried to find the narrowest definition of singing you could find (basically 80s lite-airy-funk or torch song balladeering) but then even flopped there with picks like P or Rick.

I'm shocked Billy Ocean wasn't on that mess.
2683037, oh, you think i wasn't thinking about Billy... sheeeeit, he was #11
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 11:08 AM
2683038, but if we can't agree that Peabo has a better voice than MJ we might
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 11:09 AM
as well agree to disagree
2683048, yeah, we ain't navigating that gap, peace.

2683092, There are a million and seven Peabo Bryson type singers.

2683100, I think what we'll agree on is MJ distinct voice and sound... but I cannot
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 01:06 PM
classify him as one of the greatest singers, especially in R&B. I just
can't do it.
2683565, yeah, but you're CLEARLY an arseclown.
Posted by ninjitsu, Mon Apr-09-12 10:47 AM
we can make a list of people here who think the same if it makes it more digestible for you.

dear god.
2683086, Rick James? Prince?

2683090, Tevin could sing those with a mouth full of juju beans
Posted by kysersozey, Sat Apr-07-12 12:55 PM
2683093, Lol! Maybe hit the notes and even do em some justice
Posted by bski, Sat Apr-07-12 12:59 PM
But no way is he capturing that grit, plus the rhythmic quality Mike had innately.

You are not giving props due.

2682084, Johnny Taylor?? HA HA!!!!!!!!! I love Taylor's singing, but naw
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Apr-05-12 10:33 AM
he ain' touching no Young Mike.

nobody in the Spinners is touching no Young Mike either.

Marvin, Al Green, Ottis redding got arguments though
2682028, RE: so who says Michael Jackson wasn't the Greatest R&B Singer?

I love MJ...

But that's Marvin's lane...
2682106, i might agree with you
Posted by makaveli, Thu Apr-05-12 11:10 AM

MJ falls around 3rd. or 4th after GC Cameron.

Fact of the matter is he was such an amazing entertainer, some folks forgot how damn good he was vocally. Not me. I love all that moonwalking shit as the next guy, but to me he's 1st and foremost one of the best and original R&B singers ever.

And you're right. 11 yr old Michael murks a ton of cats. Fuckin brilliant-but
cats front on teenage to grown Michael too.

I get fuckin CHILLS at :59 on this joint.
