Can I just say... this sentence is funny:

"Burial gets better with each release by becoming more and more like Burial, not a statement it's possible to make about many modern artists."

WAT!!

wat because you don't understand or wat because you don't agree? personally, and this is before hearing this new work, i don't share the enthusiasm but understand the appeal. IMO he's had a singular sound for a long time, maybe always, but with each new work, people hear that specialness about him and maybe get a sense of him being one of the all-time greats. i do crave a little more variety and experimentation, but the massive attack remixes were enough of that to keep me quiet about it.
2639195, *shrug*

It's just not impressive anymore. It's cool but not impressive and that sentence basically summarizes why. Where he's excelled is in spacing releases. If he were flooding the market I think folk would have tired of him long ago. But since no one really does it like him and he doesn't overdo it, for many his new stuff always sounds fresh. Not to me so much.

2639199, There is something to be said about it tho

Here's what usually happens as time goes on (and in order of frequency).

1)They keep on making the same song over and over again, with diminishing returns. (Half of all hip-hop mc's, Nickelback, etc).

2)They flip the scrip totally, not realizing that while in their lane they are Dale Earnhart JR, but in that other lane they are sunday drivers getting lapped. (See any third album by a popular rock band. If they are mega popular, they pull this the second album).

3)They get more insular in their world. (Lots of IDM artists)
2639200, For art sake I go with #3
Posted by imcvspl, Wed Dec-14-11 10:00 AM
I mean I understand the whole market trend thing, and I'd like to think a good artist can play that for four albums then they have to choose their exit path. I hope they go with #3 because decades down the road they'll be remembered positively for it. The other options always end up limiting artists to 'those good years.'

is he considered Dubstep?
2639350, Yes.

2639351, No

Actually you are right, he is 'considered' dubstep, but he doesn't consider himself that.

i've seen the term used to describe him, yet everything that is spoken of as Dubstep sounds NOTHING like his work
2661322, depending on when you first started hearing the term "dubstep"
Posted by Nodima, Mon Feb-13-12 06:56 AM
nothing that is currently referred to as dubstep sounds anything remotely like what was once called "dubstep"

as in like five years ago.

which is cool, but...ya kno.
2661791, this ep is definitely a progression and enhancement in sound.
Posted by Ghetto Black, Mon Feb-13-12 11:39 PM
yet still within a similar realm as previous work.

this may be the ep of this decade, lol.

hyperbole aside it's a phenomenal release.
2661877, I made the mistake of

cueing this up followed by Passed Me By. Kinda makes the Burial laughable. Maybe if I had played Scuba or Sepalcure.

2661931, youre saying Andy Slott shits on Burial?
Posted by amplifya7, Tue Feb-14-12 11:22 AM
I gotta hear him then...cuz IMO NOTHING shits on this release, this might be the best Burial release yet
2661963, Disclaimer: I'm reaching to make the comparison
Posted by imcvspl, Tue Feb-14-12 11:58 AM
Andy is in a wholy different lane. I'm way more into that lane. Burial only flirts with it on the new EP. Andy has been going full tilt for two years now. If that's the lane Burial is headed toward he's got a long way to catch up. But it's doubtful that's where he's going anyway. I don't know I hear this EP as a flirty album. Flirting with things without moving too far beyond his bread and butter. I'm personally tired of his bread and butter and his flirtations don't impress me. *shrug*

Posted by rhymesandammo, Tue Feb-14-12 02:11 PM
primus just mad because he knows some dude that did a show with burial or something and he found out that burial uses the same sequence/save file for all his music, just swaps out the samples and messes with the EQ.

if it aint broke dont fix it i say, also burial's music has more feeling than basically anyone...very emotional
2662101, is ne-yo "on" the new EP?
Posted by howisya, Tue Feb-14-12 02:15 PM
i was trying to figure it out yesterday without doing any searching. do you know?

I actually like "Untrue" as an album. Very cohesive. He is talented but I just feel like he doesnt switch up his sound that much. Theres always 2 sides to the argument, where one says progression and the other says if its not broke, dont fix it. Im content enough with just having Untrue in my collection. But I do think Scuba is good as well. Perhaps on the level of Burial, but thats just off Triangulation. Because his new album, Personality, was not for me.
2661149, its 'out'...off one listen it sounded amazing to me
Posted by amplifya7, Sun Feb-12-12 04:45 PM
and like he was using some new sounds and styles while still sounding like Burial

with every new release. not heard this one yet, but the last ep just sounded like a rehash. i know hes like hyperdub's madlib, but everything since that first album dropped has been lukewarm or rehashes to me. im cool with him exploring his sound, but it just doesnt do it for me like the first album and those first eps.

anyone who says kindred EP + truancy EP sound like his earlier work is either real deaf or real stoooooooopid.

granted i'll say the street halo EP was more of the same but this year he's seriously took his sound to a whole another level.

if u can't hear the growth from shit like the final few minutes of truancy then i don't know what 2 say.

maybe yr mind wuz made up already. mAYBE UR A HATER.
