Still waiting for a vinyl release to be announced. Def Jam didn't release Ghost and Redman's albums on vinyl last year, nor did they put out Watch the Throne, so I'm a bit worried. One would think that Quest would insist on a vinyl release though..

Does anyone have some info on this?

Def Jam is apparently pretty good about putting off vinyl releases.
You'd think with a band like The Roots they'd be hip to put it out on vinyl too.

2636473, No, most covers on his shows are "album slicks"
Posted by johnbook, Tue Dec-06-11 05:47 PM
There are a few he features on the show that are actual vinyl pressings, but most covers are specially made. Best clue is when he puts the "cover" down and it's completely in black. The Steve Martin album they showed last night? That was an actual LP, and you could see that it had a gatefold sleeve.

"Album slicks" is the term record labels use when they would set up displays at record stores to promote the album. You might see a cardboard display or poster, or maybe a section with multiple album covers. It would be too costly to staple/Scotch tape actual album covers as a display, so they just print up "slicks" with the front cover. Most are tossed out, but a few are collectibles since a few labels in the late 90's (Universal) would press up vinyl but place them in generic covers, without making a sleeve. The "album slick" would be the only way you could have the album cover as a proper 12", instead of taking a picture and attempting to do it yourself.

thanks for sharing your knowledge on this. I've noticed a couple of times that he has had full size covers for albums that weren't out on vinyl, this explains it.

On a related note: I was about to pick up a vinyl copy of Things Fall Apart, which is one of the few Roots albums I never got on vinyl (the other two being dywm and alive), however I noticed that the tracklisting for the US version does not list Act Fore (the end) contrary to the EU and Clean promo pressings. Do any of you know if it's on there, but just not listed, or if they actually omitted it from this pressing?

Thanks

Did Freud say of the Irish "This is one race of people for whom psychoanalysis is of no use whatsoever."?

This remark is discussed in the Oscar-winning movie 'The Departed'. However, there is no evidence Freud ever said it.

2635778, Its been years since I've been this GLUED to a Roots album
Posted by DVS, Mon Dec-05-11 10:56 AM
I dug Game Theory...I liked How I got Over...but THIS SHIT?!?

1st off...the brevity really plays into the ADD Ipod generation format that I am kinda victimized by.

2nd...the connectivity of it really takes you through. I we can all say "Kool On" is a favorite...but I couldn't even imagine taking that song out of the suite. I mean...maybe as a "See...the album is dope...listen to THIS!!!" type situation...but its a narrative and it should be consumed as a full-on animal a la "Here, My Dear"

3rd...where this album excels past its only similar offering..."A Prince Amongst Thieves"....is that the narrative is non-linear and implied. There is a genius there in that its not a movie you are going to watch and understand the full nature of. It actually reminds me of **shameless plug** me and tREBLEFREE'S album "THE BALLAD OF CJ MEMPHIS" in that it takes particular scenes from a larger object and weaves them together...but even in that...we kept the format more linear than this. I can honestly see myself listening to this album for years...and to say that for a Roots album in 2011 not late 90s-early 2000? That's a fucking accomplishment.

4th...the fucking music suites...the general orchestration...I've been waiting for a Roots album that would make both use of Thought's writing and the band's reputation...and this is it. You can REALLY tell that the Fallon show has helped to gel their sound and hone it in a way that incessant touring hasn't. I also like the fact that Thought is very understated in that he is tied to a larger narrative...so MC posturing and bravado is at a minimum...eliminating one of the greater cliches of this genre.

This shit is a knife. And its sharp.

I'm not going to sully my opinion of the album by trying to add a rating to it...but I'll say that this is easily a top 3 Roots Album of all time.

* Still not a fan of the singing hooks, maybe mostly because I'm not a fan of the singers. Which isn't to say they aren't serviceable but The Roots have worked with singers. I imagine Bilal in more spots, Jill Scott on that one joint. The voices themselves would turn the whole thing around.

* Thought is exponentially better on the tracks featuring Greg Porn. And he still gets got on the one he drops that clunker about being the toast of the town like Thomas. But Stomp. Best verses all around.

* The instrumental bits stand out like a sore thumb. Nothing about them scream The Roots to me. They fit in with the whole cinematic feel, but they almost overstate it unnecessarily so.

* LMAO at them going 'out'. I mean I've seen something in that vein live but within a 'suite'. Kudos for that.

* Speaking of sound and design, the snare on Lighthouse. At first I was mad that it wasn't cracking (yo shout out for all the cracking drums on here though), but then I realized with the spaced out verb it created the sound of the ocean. Nice touch.

for 14.99. I was hoping for another 9.99 album, but oh well, it's worth it.

Would've loved a t-shirt with it, but I dont wanna wait 2 weeks to go to a Best Buy for it, especially for an XL shirt.

But this album is great. it flows so perfectly. If you play it backwords, it's also seamless. it's def top 3 Roots album imo.
2636558, got the BB Edition with the XL shirt. gonna let the girl use this as PJs

I listened to How I Got Over more than any other album in my life. I love that album and it has been my sound track for the last year and a half.

Just got Undun earlier tonight. Always buy the clean on iTunes so that I can play it in my classroom, then pick up the dirty hard copy later. On my third listen, and this shit has me at a loss for words. The music is beautiful. I'm looking forward to listening to this over the years and really digesting the lyrics.

Thanks to the Roots crew, you guys have provided the soundtrack to my life for 13 years.

2636745, Copped Fan Pack Edition from Best Buy

Also copped the mp3 album from 7digital, was selling for the low low of $4; encoded at the highest mp3 bitrate (320k)...for that price how could I not?

Posted by mrhood75, Wed Dec-07-11 07:37 PM
Bumped it on the way home, way to work, and twice at work. This shit is really dope, but I'm still fully absorbing it.

As of now, I'd say my favorite tracks are "One Time," "Lighthouse" and "Kool On."

Regardless, job well done.

2637963, Greg Porn is a beast on his guest features.
Posted by PierreOrdinaire, Fri Dec-09-11 05:58 PM
More impressed with him than any of the other guest features (K.R.I.T. got busy, though, too) in best capturing the mood of the album.

Anyway, scooped it up Tuesday @ BB, and the record has been on repeat in the stinkin Lincoln since then.

Shit is LIGHTYEARS ahead of HIGO.

Listening from the desk right now. I avoided leaks too. I just like the 'push play' experience for albums when I haven't already heard half of the album if I can pull that off. Especially with cats like the Roots who go out of their way to make a front-to-back jam.

I'm on Kool On...jamming of course.

And I'ma prolly Best Buy the deluxe for my mama (but I'm keeping the t-shirt!). She BE listening to the Roots stuff that I blessed her with. I know I'll be in there getting the car audio upgrade I have been putting off forever since I'm keeping the ride for 2 more years or until it dies (whichever happens first). Nav, touch-screen, USB, all of that. Might do some slight speaker upgrades too. May as well.

i purposely avoided the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th videos and all the lyric posts so that "make my" would be the only song i knew the first time i played the album. that's how i like it.
2638704, Undun at 8,120 copies sold with 36% of sales reported in
