2599898, isn't 'Empire State of Mind' one of the most deceptively
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Sep-12-11 11:14 AM
saccharine songs in the Jay-Z catalog? like... this song borders "Bonnie and Clyde '03" levels of pure Splenda sprinkling, despite having drums straight out of the Hitchhiker's Guide to Hip-Hop.

peace to dEs, Lee Lee squatted and spread DA PEE PEE all over that track like R. Kelly in the rafters of a junior high girl's locker room.

lest you think that this is a Jay-Z hate post, I'd rather hear an "Money, Cash, Hoes" with extra Sun Ra keyboard knuckledragging action over that shit. Jay better than that BS.

shit, I'd rather BLAST the most "Shower to Shower"-ass Drake song over that shit. at least it'd feel honest in its Tresvantiness.

man, I'm glad Jay came out with WTT...that'd be a wack note to go out on BP3.
2599906, I really don't think it's a bad song
Posted by CMcMurtry, Mon Sep-12-11 11:24 AM
It's just

a) tremendously overexposed.

and

b) made into something it's not.
2599907, I would agree with this
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Sep-12-11 11:26 AM
>a) tremendously overexposed.

>and

>b) made into something it's not.

maybe that was the intent... which is why it's so deceptive.
2599918, Agreed

2599922, such a rip off of Nas' "Ny State of Mind" it's unreal.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Mon Sep-12-11 11:50 AM
2599925, sounds nothing like it cause its about New York?
Posted by Menphyel7, Mon Sep-12-11 11:52 AM
its an ass of songs about New York
2599944, of course nothing like it... but conceptually it's a rip off
Posted by Artful Dodger, Mon Sep-12-11 12:19 PM
and considering the long history of Jay ripping off others lyrics and ideas... well let's just say this isn't a stretch.
2599953, lol wut.

2599972, How are the concepts similar
Posted by s t a r s k y, Mon Sep-12-11 01:05 PM
Other than the names and the fact that both songs are about NY?

2600202, Then by that logic Nas bit Billy Joel's 'New York State of Mind'!
Posted by The Analyst, Mon Sep-12-11 09:37 PM
Stole the title and everything!

And Billy Joel bit Sinatra!
2599927, lol wut.

2599923, I think of it as an Alicia Keys song
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Sep-12-11 11:51 AM

Because Jay's verses are horrible

2599935, i still like it.
Posted by woe.is.me., Mon Sep-12-11 12:03 PM
for what it is (a hip hop city anthem that is palettable to wider audiences), i don't think its bad at all.
2599938, You see the way Jeetz nods his head to it
Posted by T Reynolds, Mon Sep-12-11 12:11 PM
with the smirk of a toolbag winner

Song was epic but yes it's quite hateable now due to being played into a shallow grave

2599940, I started off disliking that song
Posted by debo40oz, Mon Sep-12-11 12:14 PM
after that phillies yankees world series I hate it with a passion.
2600220, ^^ Sen Jayz at Powerhouse in Philly before the World Series
Posted by HeadNodda, Mon Sep-12-11 10:23 PM
he said to the audience...yall gonna hate this song in about a week..then made a bet with a random dude in the front on the Phillies and Yanks
2599947, that shit is what you call an anthem
Posted by mwasi kitoko, Mon Sep-12-11 12:22 PM
I dont really listen to either alicia keys or jayz but I love the shit out of that song
the verses are whatever jay doesn't say anything incredible but that hook???
Wooooooooooo!
I'm from NY tho so maybe I'm biased
2599950, ^ in Neeeeewww Yooooooooork!!
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Mon Sep-12-11 12:27 PM
hell yeah, you biased. LOL. it's cool tho.

that chorus is epic. can't front on it...although i'm not a fan of the song.
2599951, I can only imagine NY'ers liking that song...
Posted by 8-bit, Mon Sep-12-11 12:28 PM
2599954, that State Farm commercial w/the kids screaming it
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-12-11 12:30 PM
made me want to turn my tv off yesterday.
2599956, mugs in my TL yesterday were talking about how touching it was, etc.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Mon Sep-12-11 12:34 PM
i paid attention to the commercial when it came on today (i tuned it waaaaay out yesterday) and i was like, really? this shit here?

y'all crying over this?

i wish they would only air it on that day, but it looks like it might be around for a minute. *groans*
2599960, ...MESSATSU.

2600213, I cringed at that shit...
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Mon Sep-12-11 10:06 PM
And they played it during every fucking game yesterday. I was like, "Is someone really trying to turn THIS into some sort of endearing song of human spirit and triumph?" Like using the kids' choir was supposed to soften our hearts. lol smh
2599967, Nas lost again
Posted by go mack, Mon Sep-12-11 12:54 PM
by picking to go with Kevin Rudolf instead of A Keys. lol I actually like Nas's verse here better than any of Jay's verses

2599971, lol kevin rudolph lol.
Posted by Guinness, Mon Sep-12-11 01:01 PM
nas lost.
2599980, holy shit, that song is absolutely awful
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Sep-12-11 01:18 PM
Empire State of Mind is a good record that's just relentlessly overplayed.
2599975, It's pretty rare to actually like a number one song though

most are better (and less exposed) than this
2599983, standardfor 2011 is Effective. NOT Good
Posted by 15, Mon Sep-12-11 01:21 PM
i see why the song is effective.

and im glad ray goodman and brown are getting checks.

win win
2599990, so effective it's good?
Posted by movinonyoleftAHHHH, Mon Sep-12-11 01:35 PM
i think that's the argument... it's undeniably effective (see: fucking children singing in front of the fire station in that commercial, jay's first no. 1, etc), but some people see it as just being empty bullshit pandering – understandable.

it does what it does so well though that i think it's a good song even though jay is in cruise control. song bangs in concert
