2567031, come clean: classic songs where you heard the remake first.
Posted by come on people, Thu Jun-30-11 09:14 AM
and didn't know it was a remake.

as i mentioned in that doggystyle post: "lodi dodi."

also, "at your best (you are love)" and "work to do" by the isley brothers.

there are probably a few others i'll come up with, but those are probably the most egregious examples.
2567043, Most of Luther's early discog, "I feel for you".....
Posted by DickGrayson, Thu Jun-30-11 09:25 AM
Mary J - "I'm going down"
EWF - "Got to get you into my life"
2567048, lol....luther is just utterly sick w/the remakes.
Posted by come on people, Thu Jun-30-11 09:29 AM
i literally had no idea "havin' a party" was a remake (sam cooke) until a few months ago. same with "creepin" (stevie wonder) and "anyone who had a heart" (dionne warwick).
2567096, RE: lol....luther is just utterly sick w/the remakes.
Posted by DickGrayson, Thu Jun-30-11 10:35 AM
My dad used to call it "Luterized" or would say "You know he had to 'Luther' it up".....
2567049, i don't think "i feel 4 u" or "nothing compares 2 u" are fair lol
Posted by come on people, Thu Jun-30-11 09:31 AM
the remakes were HUGE hits while the originals were album tracks. there's a difference between that and, say, not knowing patti labelle made "if you ask me to" first.
2567060, Luther Vandross OWNS this post.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:43 AM
2567389, sheeit, half the songs on "the best of luther/the best of love"
Posted by cbk, Thu Jun-30-11 07:08 PM
2567408, Man! I JUUUST found out about "If this world were mine"
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jun-30-11 08:30 PM
I had NO IDEA that was Marvin.

"Always and forever" - Yup.
2567061, hendrix: "all along the watchtower"
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:44 AM
"hey joe" was a cover as well, apparently.
2634675, RE: hendrix: "all along the watchtower"
Posted by Saponi Boy, Thu Dec-01-11 04:53 PM
yeah, i used to argue with my old college room mate about this one, swore it was a Jimi original...haha, I was wrong!
2567062, MJ's "come together"
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:45 AM
2567291, I heard the Aerosmith one first.

Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:46 AM
2634156, my boy played it for me
Posted by AlBundy, Wed Nov-30-11 04:07 PM
i was like wtf, this shit sound old.
pretty sure that was right before i had any concept of sampling
2567065, TLC: "get it up"
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:47 AM
2567087, lol...my dad had that morris day & the time album in the house
Posted by come on people, Thu Jun-30-11 10:21 AM
i was looking through his collection one day at the time "get it up" was out and i saw that. tripped me out. good one. i had no clue on that either.
2567410, I heard this back then....then I heard Morris Day's years later
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jun-30-11 08:33 PM
and never even realized that it was the same song for a while. I forgot about TLC's til I heard it at the end of some movie, n then I said "wait.............that's the same lyrics/melody as Morris huh?"
2635648, the cassingle said the writer was Prince
Posted by CinisterCee, Sun Dec-04-11 09:35 PM
so for a while I kept looking at old Prince cassettes for the original
2567066, prince-- "i can't make you love me"
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Jun-30-11 09:48 AM
i didn't know it was a cover until
i read the liner notes.
2567081, 'I Feel For You' is the one that came directly to mind
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Jun-30-11 10:15 AM
also "It's Right As Rain", I knew the Bob James version first
2567420, I know a lot of older people that don't know Prince wrote that.
Posted by rorschach, Thu Jun-30-11 09:23 PM
They'll honestly swear up and down it was always Chaka's song.

Posted by Small Pro, Thu Jun-30-11 11:08 AM
first heard the elucid and spec boogie version.

:-(
2567305, Helter Skelter, Cum on feel the noize, Am I evil?
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Jun-30-11 03:28 PM
I first heard "Helter Skelter" with Mötley Crue as a kid and didn't even know it was a Beatles-song until MUCH later...

Cum on feel the noize I thought was a Quiet Riot original but is of course a Slade-song. I never checked for Slade growing up on the strength of their terrible hits "My oh my" and "Runaway".

Metallica's classic non-album B-side "Am I evil?" is a Diamond Head song but I didn't know until much later for some reason; I guess I was bad at checking credits when I was younger. Also, that song sounded totally metallica unlike many of their other covers...
2567310, i didn't know the quiet riot one was a cover
Posted by amplifya7, Thu Jun-30-11 03:38 PM
2567318, Slade never made it in america...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Jun-30-11 03:46 PM
Just like Sweet, Suzie Quatro or even T.rex to a certain extent. Basically, the british '70's glam-rock scene never truly crossed over to america (not that it needed to, Kiss and Alice Cooper held it down in the US with better records IMO-Marc Bolan/T.rex an obvious exception).

Basically, i doubt the regular american knows that it's a cover. For me, it was more ignorance since Slade actually were quite big in sweden...
2567313, Def Squad - Rapper's Delight, INOJ - Love You Down
Posted by amplifya7, Thu Jun-30-11 03:39 PM
not really embarassed, I was like 12 years old
2567409, Got damn! I was probably 12 too but Rapper's delight was like

I had no idea that Todd Rundgren was the originator. I just thought it was an Isley Bros. joint
2568656, speaking of Todd
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Jul-05-11 02:17 PM
his song (w/Utopia), "Love Is The Answer" -- I knew one of the covers before I knew his song

my favorite version of that song was recorded by Keni Burke, but I heard that one after Utopia's.
2567399, fast car...heard the dancehall version before tracy chapman's.

Most recently, "If this world were mine" which blew my damn mind because I NEVER knew Marvin did it.

Musiq Soulchild "Settle for my love" - I didn't know the homegirl Patrice did it first.

Aaliyah "At your best"

Maxwell "This woman's work"

Kelly Price "As we lay"

Whitney "I will always love you"

Isley Brothers:
hello it's me (heard the groove theory version first)
at your best (heard the aaliyah version first)
work to do (heard the vanessa williams version first)

Loose Ends:
Stay a little while (heard mariah carey's remake/remix first)

Stevie Wonder:
you and I (heard mariah carey's live version of it first)
2568198, The Isleys' Hello It's Me is also a cover
Posted by Bumaye, Mon Jul-04-11 11:44 AM
Todd Rundgren's band Nazz is the original version. Rundgren also had his own solo version before the Isley version.
2568037, Mariah Carey's Version of "The Beautiful Ones" With Sisqo and 'nem...

I had only heard Isaac Hayes' version, and when I learned that Dionne Warwick sang it originally I damn near had a heartache. Although Dionne's version is really really great, Isaac killed that shit in a manner that's hard to follow.
2642019, their versions are so different, it's really hard to compare.
Posted by come on people, Wed Dec-21-11 03:55 PM
it's almost like it's 2 different songs entirely because isaac haye's take is so radically different from the original. hers is a pop ditty that's great (fantastic, really) to snap your fingers to. isaac haye's take is EPIC.
2568686, "Everytime You Go Away"
Posted by j3ph, Tue Jul-05-11 03:15 PM
Not exactly classic, but Paul Young stunk up what was an incredible Hall and Oates song. That H&O version kills.
2568707, there's plenty, but off the top: Hey Joe
Posted by Playa_Politician, Tue Jul-05-11 04:07 PM
hell it was old as dirt when i first heard it, come to find out it's not really Jimmi's track.

2634191, Does damn near every hip hop song with a sample count?
Posted by beatnik, Wed Nov-30-11 04:51 PM
because honestly there are tons of songs where i actually heard the sample first when i was younger then read some liner notes, then had the internet years later or heard it on the radio at some point

and one great example is that i never realized that was minnie ripertons voice on lyrics to go until i watched the documentary. . . #facepalm

Song already existed in a few iterations before her.

For Once In My Life which I thought was Stevie's until I saw him bring up Tony Bennett to sing it at MSG.

Erykah Badu's 4 Leaf Clover I thought was an original (which I like) until my big bro walked in on me playing it and got pissed off. He said she messed up the song.
2634555, "All Along The Watchtower" OWNS this post.
Posted by Burt Reynoldz, Thu Dec-01-11 12:51 PM
I very much doubt there's ANYBODY who heard the Bob Dylan original first. For most people it's the Hendrix version they're familiar with, or if you're a lot younger, the ubiquitous cover version by the Dave Matthews Band.
