Both Metallica and Slayer pushed things in that direction after groovier debut albums that sounded a little more Motorhead, a little less polka. Personally I listen to thrash specifically for that quality and the older "speed metal" sound doesn't do a lot for me; if I want that feel I'd rather go to the source and just listen to Motorhead or some actual d-beat.
