13319839, She's an elder

In Black culture, you don't call elders by their first name. The fact that she wasn't aware of this is a mess.
13319876, Pretty much how I was raised.

At the very least, you have got to put a "Miss" in front of it. Not just say the first name all Willy nilly.
13319901, yep. hanging out w/ white folks i was amazed they just go by first names

my cousins always called my aunt's white best friend by her first name. and when i'd visit i'd always call her Ms Jones and she's like "you can call me Lisa like everyone else"

i looked at my mom for approval and she shook her head. still call her Ms Jones to this day.
13319904, Lol right?

I'm 37 and still calling my Mom's friends Miss whatever. It just feels inappropriate without the Miss.
13319841, That would’ve been better if done privately.

13319908, she was right, but she went kinda far with the whole 'license' thing
Posted by silenttype, Fri Mar-15-19 08:45 AM
like- of course it was correct to check her
but given it was an AA child, she coulda just been like
'baby- it's Ms Angelou when addressing elders'

a mild chastising woulda been more appropriate
that bordered on embarrassing a child that likely
didn't know what she didn't know and meant no harm
13320013, Turns out she apologized and turns out homegirl was 14.

I thought she was our age and just looked young I kinda see Maya’s point more now.

Here’s a clip of her apologizing, that was nice of her: https://twitter.com/sportyidk/status/1106543128914333701?s=21
