13310864, You playing any fighting games?
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jan-31-19 03:31 PM
Smash came out a few weeks ago. But I never really did smash.
All of these snk joints are on the switch store
And there are some street fighters also

But what if really like is a killer instinct or an injustice for my switch

So I just spend time window shopping games in the moment.

13310868, I’m not a fan of freeze frames to highlight moves
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jan-31-19 03:37 PM
Marvel vs Capcom full screen animation ... sure
But this other stuff takes away from the fluid nature that I want in a fighter
I hit one ultra in my entire time playing and just never knew that you gonna get there and then it starts picking up pace before the last hit.
13310979, You gotta steal a nigga in the face on the third one
Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri Feb-01-19 08:04 AM
That's just overkill

One ultra combo is enough because it's the end of the match, the second one is screaming "Hey, look what I can do!".

The third one is just plain disrespectful.
13310874, street fighter V
Posted by bearfield, Thu Jan-31-19 03:46 PM
i'm trying to learn dragon ball fighterz but it's not clicking. also i have zero connection to and only the most basic knowledge of the dragon ball universe so the impetus isn't really there. i might dip back in to guilty gear because i really liked playing a character that could juggle someone from one corner to another. i was planning on learning KOF 14 this year with the intention continuing my streak of learning one new fighting game every year (guilty gear in '17, street fighter v in '18) and improving my execution but i'm grinding my way up to diamond rank in SFV instead
13310878, I hate that the game is $60, but it’s like $110 for full roster
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jan-31-19 03:50 PM
There aren’t enough characters for me to justify that.
13310890, ?
Posted by bearfield, Thu Jan-31-19 03:58 PM
>There aren’t enough characters for me to justify that.

the most recent iteration of SFV ("arcade edition") is $40 new and includes all characters released in the base game and seasons 1 & 2. you can earn an in-game currency to buy whichever season 3 characters you wish. that's 28 characters ready to go when you first load up the game and 7 more you can buy with real or in-game money if you want to. you *might* spend $70 total for the game and all the DLC characters
13310902, I was talking Dragon Ball. It’s a beautiful looking game
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jan-31-19 04:18 PM
But I can’t justify the cost.

House and with the switch I can take it with me on the road, up to bed, free up a tv, etc
13310885, SFIV still had a decent following, surprisingly
Posted by spenzalii, Thu Jan-31-19 03:53 PM
I need to get back into V, but the initial roll out killed it for me. I've done the updates, got AE, but no real desire to make time to get back to it and get good. I can still find a match in IV pretty quickly though.

Started playing FighterZ with my son, but it's a bit too much for me. It is what MvCI should have been, but I never got too far with the whole vs. games to begin with (more a diversion than anything else). It is extremely pretty and OTT, like the anime come to life
13310901, I played marraige for a while

I force my kids to watch for the arcade experience. Without an audience, it feels hollow.

May not be safe to play in front of the kids, since it's bloody, but it's coming.
13311683, had no idea, thanks
Posted by Lil Rabies, Mon Feb-04-19 08:51 PM
They're used to the blood by now
Fake violence is the best kind
13310908, i "play" dragonball fighterZ
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jan-31-19 04:27 PM
and by "play" i mean i pop that disc in every now and then, get waxed cause i dont know the moves and then turn off my PS4 and apologize to my saiyan predecessors.
13311444, That game makes me feel like the clown faced little guy
Posted by nativesun07, Mon Feb-04-19 10:07 AM
All these crazy explosions going on in my face and I have no idea what's going on.
I think that's the only way to play
13310911, never been huge into fighting games
Posted by mista k5, Thu Jan-31-19 04:35 PM
smash was probably the one ive enjoyed the most. i did get it for switch and have been playing the story mode here and there.

i have great memories of killer instinct. probably my fav after smash.
13310916, I’m a micro-notch above Amateur rank.
Posted by JFrost1117, Thu Jan-31-19 04:53 PM
I know enough to beat the shit out of a fellow clueless, only-know-fireball faceass.
13310920, Fighting games got a small middle class.
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Jan-31-19 05:04 PM
You got the 1 percent who play in tournaments.

You got the 10 percent who stuck around to play them competently.

And then you got the 89 percent who cop the game, fuck around with it for a few days to see all the different stuff, and then don't touch it again until the homies come through.
13310930, i love fighting games, but they're easily my worst genre
Posted by hardware, Thu Jan-31-19 05:54 PM
my hands just move too slow
13310935, see thats my issue
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jan-31-19 06:17 PM
if we had the plethora of online capabilities and game variety that we do now, maybe 10 years ago? back when i had the time, eyes and reflexes to get all that shit down pat? wheeeeeeeeew
13310936, slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Jan-31-19 06:22 PM
the games don’t really require crazy hand speed. if you can play video games, you can play fighting games. they do have a steep learning curve, but once you’ve learned one you’ve learned them all.
13311126, i feel like i missed the opportunity to learn
Posted by hardware, Fri Feb-01-19 03:34 PM
i had a few summers as a teen but i was playing platformers and bullet-hell games instead.

the time has passed for me, i think. i just don't have the hours. :(
13311137, you don't need hella hours all at once.
Posted by IkeMoses, Fri Feb-01-19 03:49 PM
A half hour of play a few times a week will make you decent after a couple months.

will you be getting sponsored by Red Bull or some shit? prolly not, but it def ain't too late to learn.

i play a lot. i spend like an hour after work playing. i still ain't very good, but i've gotten to a place where i can hang with high level players and that's all i want from it. but you don't even need to play that much to get to a level where you're enjoying the games.
13310948, you get faster the more you play
Posted by bearfield, Thu Jan-31-19 07:38 PM
i picked up one of the more technically demanding characters in guilty gear xrd (ramlethal) at the tender age of 39, after not having played any fighting games for maybe a decade and having never played guilty gear before. i was slow af when i started playing again. i felt like i couldn't do any moves and my reflexes were trash. but as i played more i became acclimated with the speed of the game and learning combo and link timings. the game "slowed down" which effectively sped up my inputs

you can get good at those games but it takes time and practice, and it takes more time the older you are, depending on your history with fighting games. i had a good base of thousands of hours logged in arcades on xmen vs street fighter, marvel vs capcom 1 & 2, and various others but that was literally 20 years prior. i really felt like i had hit the reset button since i hadn't engaged with fighting games since the early days of street fighter iv. but i kept at it and i got good at fighting games again. it took forever but it did happen
13311128, i just don't have the time now, i fear
Posted by hardware, Fri Feb-01-19 03:36 PM
i got deep into Skullgirls, but thats probably because Skullgirl's single player mode actually covert tutorializes you. After i played it for a while i saw an improvement in my skill in other fighters, but not enough for it to be satisfying.
13311157, like ike said you don't need to devote all your time to it
Posted by bearfield, Fri Feb-01-19 04:32 PM
but you do have to commit to it. i tend to play about 1 hr/night and went from 0 to platinum (top 20k in the world, top 4k in north america) in about 6 months

the best piece of advice i can give you is to play to learn and not to win. winning should be a byproduct of learning how to play. take those L's in stride. the only bad match is the one you didn't learn anything from (they do happen). give it a month or so of 30-60 minutes a night or a few hours a week and see if your play improves
13310961, Street Fighter forever.
Posted by will_5198, Thu Jan-31-19 10:32 PM
nearly every other fighting game feels clunky to me, or just not right. SFV is the first time I actually reached a competent level at a fighting game and it's been a time-sink for three years.
13311051, Always been a Mortal Kombat and Tekken dude
Posted by tully_blanchard, Fri Feb-01-19 11:56 AM
I really stopped playing games like...19, so years ago though. I pulled my PS2 out a couple of months ago and realized I only have the 3-D MK games left. Not a big fan of those.

13311140, Got back into MKXL after the MK11 reveal
Posted by Nodima, Fri Feb-01-19 03:58 PM
Hadn’t finished the story when I bought it a couple years back so I binged through that, been chopping away at each characters’ arcade mode towers every couple days since.

The new one looks like it might be a little overwhelming but as a guy that doesn’t really go online with fighters MK I feel is the most reliable single player fighter so I’ll probably cop at some point.

13311688, DBFZ & SFV
Posted by Sleepy, Mon Feb-04-19 09:12 PM
I don't have a lot of time to play them, but I'm waiting for the Dragonball DLC to get cheaper.

I only play maybe once a month or so, but jumped at buying season 3 character pass for SFV.

I'm pretty bad. I love playing it, but I don't have the time to invest in getting better.
13311774, tekken was the only one i excelled at

Soul Calibur too maybe

but i think shooters are my worst area

to me...competition is much tighter on that

fighting games are a cakewalk in comparison

you can legit learn one character's moves in a week with only like 30-60 minutes a day and hold your own

shooters on the other hand...way too many skills needed and if you're missing any of the major ones...bullet sponge

aim
map memory
composure
controls

ANY weakness on those...you auto-suck
13311870, yeah this me
