Lol - as I was reading this thread I thought about Big 8 / Lowe's. I've only seen these carpet joints in the Lower Valley.

Do certain daily sounds trigger an over-the-top emotional reaction, but yet don’t seem to bother anyone else?

This is the case with misophonia -- a strong dislike or hatred of specific sounds.
What Happens?

Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable give the circumstance. Those who have misoponia might describe it as when a sound “drives you crazy.” Their reactions can range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee. The disorder is sometimes called selective sound sensitivity syndrome.

Individuals with misophonia often report they are triggered by oral sounds -- the noise someone makes when they eat, breathe, or even chew. Other adverse sounds include. keyboard or finger tapping or the sound of windshield wipers. Sometimes a small repetitive motion is the cause -- someone fidgets, jostles you, or wiggles their foot.

Similarly, people with misophonia also say they often react to the visual stimuli that accompanies sounds, and may also respond intensely to repetitive motions. Researchers believe that those with misophonia may already have issues with how their brains filter sounds and that one of the features of “misophonic sounds” may be their repetitive noise. That repetition then exacerbates the other auditory processing problems.

The disorder appears to range from mild to severe. Individuals report a range of physiologic and emotional responses, with accompanying cognitions. If you have a mild reaction, you might feel:

Anxious
Uncomfortable
The urge to flee
Disgust

If your response is more severe, the sound in question might cause:

Rage
Anger
Hatred
Panic
Fear
Emotional distress

The disease can put a cramp in your social life. You might avoid restaurants or eat separately from your spouse, family, or roommates. Or worse, you could act on what you feel. You might attack the person who’s making the sound -- physical or verbally -- cry, or run away from the situation.

Over time, you may respond to visual triggers, too. Seeing someone get ready to eat or put something in their mouth might set you off.


How Do You Get It?

This age of the onset of this lifelong condition is not known but some people report symptoms between the ages of 9 and 13. Misophonia is more common with girls and comes on quickly, although it doesn’t appear to be related to any one event.

Doctors aren’t sure what causes misophonia, but it’s not a problem with your ears. They think it’s part mental, part physical. It could be related to how sound affects your brain and triggers automatic responses in your body.

Because your ears are normal and your hearing is OK, the doctor may have trouble with a diagnosis. Misophonia is sometimes mistaken for anxiety or bipolar or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Some doctors think it should be classified as a new disorder.

Often doctors are unaware of the condition, and there is no consensus in regard to classification. Misophonia appears to occur on its own and also along with other health, developmental and psychiatric problems.

A breakthrough study recently found that misophonia is a brain-based disorder. Researchers point to a disruption in the connectivity in parts of the brain that process both sound stimulation and the fight/flight response. It also involves parts of the brain that code the importance of sounds.
How Do You Treat It?

The condition does affect daily life, but you can learn to manage it.

Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach combining sound therapy by audiologists and supportive counseling in which coping strategies are emphasized.

You might try a device like a hearing aid that creates a sound in your ear similar to a waterfall. The noise distracts you from triggers and reduces reactions.

Other treatments include talk therapy.

Your lifestyle also plays a role. Get regular exercise, plenty of sleep, and manage your stress. You can also wear ear plugs and headsets to tune out sounds. Set up quiet areas or safe spots in your home where no one will make the noises that bother you.

And find support. The Misophonia Association is based in Oregon and California, and holds a yearly convention for suffers. The International Misophonia Research Network Misophonia-Research.com is a resource for doctors and researchers interested in learning more about misophonia. Misophonia International.com offers free resources, such as handouts for parents, and webinars in association with Duke University for those in the U.S., Canada and U.K.

Actually, I can stop there and say that it's pretty-much *any* repetitive, arrhythmic sound that is a bit too-loud. That sound becomes all I can hear, and eventually all I can think about and that sends me into a rage because I really don't want to think about (whatever the trigger was). Truly drives the thoughts out of my head and it's uncontrollable for me, like someone shining a flashlight into my eyes.

Part of it is also the context of the sound:

- Crunching on chips while watching the game? Doesn't bother me that much. Hard to crunch over a TV, anyway.

- Crunching on chips in a quiet office while I'm trying to concentrate on getting a bug out of my code? I start thinking about smacking the chips out of their mouth.


Good luck explaining any of this to the people that don't understand why clicking a pen repeatedly or tapping their foot on the wooden floor in a quiet space would disturb anyone.

I think some people seek silence, while other people avoid it by any means necessary.

semi are horrible at this. we have a street that has a whole block of a turning lane. they wait until the very end of the street to get fully over. i know its a semi and turns are more difficult and all but uhm you have a whole lane. always end up with a gap of 5 cars because the semis are using both lanes.

i was thinking of this post this morning as this happened lol

i was coming up to a stop sign and a car driving on the cross street was driving from my right and turning in the street i was on. they turned into my lane before getting into their lane. if the timing was off they would of crashed into me. this isnt a race course, you dont need to hug the apex especially when its into oncoming traffic.

but its diff than what I mean.

my scenario normally happens at a light. if there's no turning lane, but people want to make a left. they can't turn because of traffic coming towards them. but they turn or lean their cars and cross the middle line into the oncoming traffic. so anyone going the opposite way have to move around them.

it slows everything down because now we all have to avoid the lane leaner.

and then get mad when the driver doesn’t see them

especially audible ones. i keep my phone on vibrate or silent. the light is enough for me to see things in a timely manner. i think i used to leave it on vibrate until i got my smartwatch, now it stays on silent.

even with that i dislike getting notifications. it always seems as soon as i put my phone down a notification comes in. many times its something i dont care about (some opinion piece from google, nfl, yahoo, etc).

then theres work email notifications. really dislike getting a notification on my phone for work emails when at my desk with the email app open. dont know what could be done about that while still getting the notifications to come through when im not at my desk.

I get it. Sidewalks are uneven...You like to look up when you jog...Bikes and scooters are doing it. But if you don't get your slow running ass out of the way of motor vehicles in rush hour on streets without bike lanes, and run down to city council to push for a new ordinance- I'm gonna scream.
