13304643, OutKast 2K19 (an EarthGang post)
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 12:03 PM
So, I know the title of this post is gonna rub a lot of folks the wrong way, and may turn ya'll off to what I'm about to present... But I had to get you in the door. Now that you're here though, why are ya'll sleeping on EarthGang?! Their album, MirrorLand is slated to drop next month and it's one of my most anticipated releases of 2019. Don't know who they are? Cool. I gotchu. Tell me this shit ain't fire.

Up (if you only watch one, watch this one)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgNVvtOp8mU

Stuck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAt2opBKt9M

Robots
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK5YW8tJsx8

Meditate feat. JID (who you should also be up on at this point)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skw3kUycvpo

Now to be clear, EarthGang is not better than Kast. Not as good as Kast. But in 2019, they're the closest we've got (and the similarities are uncanny).
And as a bonus they previewed a couple more tracks from MirrorLand on IG the other day (Up and Stuck should be there too), and here's that:

13304776, So we're all in agreement then. They're dope af and we can't wait
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 04:02 PM
for their album.
13304785, lol gotta admit the post did turn me off from giving them a chance
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-04-19 04:10 PM
the name is gonna stick and when the album drops i will probably check it out though.
13304797, Did you listen to the tracks though?
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 04:43 PM
13304800, nope
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-04-19 04:45 PM
unless im really itching to hear something new from someone i try to wait until the album comes out.

cant always avoid hearing some singles though.
13304803, Check out Meditate then. It's from a previous EP called "Rags"

13304886, Damn. This song goes.
Posted by Brew, Sat Jan-05-19 02:09 PM
13304783, Don't do that.
Posted by Brew, Fri Jan-04-19 04:09 PM
They're weird, they're from Atlanta, and that one dude definitely tries to emulate 3k. But nah. "Next OutKast" as the first commenter on that first video terms them, is kind of insulting haha.
13304796, If I hadn't said it, people would have come to that conclusion anyway
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 04:43 PM
Every single person I know who has listened to then has come to the same conclusion. Every single person without any prompting says "Dang they remind me of OutKast" Or "I get OutKast vibes from these dudes" People just don't like be told that upfront, it turns them off. But they are in a lot of ways, a lot like OutKast. A duo from Atlanta, who makes "weird" music compared to what the rest of the region is doing. Johnny Venus is a lot like Andre stylistically and WowGr8 (formerly Doctur Dot) is a lot like Big in that he's the "regular" Atlanta nigga of the two (but a different generation of "regular").
Don't get me wrong, OutKast is my favorite group of all time and Andre my favorite rapper of all time. And if you'd read my entire post -- I don't think EarthGang is better, or even as good as Kast. But if you think the comparison isn't apt, you're lying to yourself.
13304885, Right I hear you.
Posted by Brew, Sat Jan-05-19 02:08 PM
Didn't mean to come off so dismissive but re-reading what I wrote it def *does* come off that way so my bad.

You did add the qualifiers so we're on the same page for the most part. I guess my gripe would just be that putting them on that pedestal right off the bat results in unfair expectations for THIS group, even if most people would naturally come to the conclusion that there are clear similarities on their own, as you rightfully said.

I mean I definitely see it and hear it. So again we're on the same page there. I guess it's just my natural inclination to get fired up anytime anyone tries to compare another group to OutKast lol.
13304798, Post title was trolly, but I appreciated this
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Jan-04-19 04:44 PM
13304802, I didn't wanna do it. But I had to get ya'll in the post
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 04:46 PM
I was gonna make this post a few days ago, but I couldn't think of a different title that would make anyone care
13304809, I wanted to like them, but I don’t like their voices.
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Jan-04-19 05:05 PM
Meditate from the Rags EP was cool, but I think JID was the deciding factor.
13304812, Just outta curiousity
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 05:10 PM
Do you dislike Kendrick's voice?
13304827, Yes, sometimes.
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Jan-04-19 05:43 PM
But even on songs where I don’t like his voice, the beats are usually super hoard, which makes up the deficit.
13304825, lol ima hire you for my street team
Posted by PG, Fri Jan-04-19 05:40 PM
13304839, listened...you set them up for failure with that title
Posted by tomjohn29, Fri Jan-04-19 06:45 PM
13304849, So sensitive
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-04-19 07:25 PM
What did you dislike about the songs?
13304853, EarthGang has been in constant rotation on my morning run playlist
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Jan-04-19 09:23 PM
since last spring.
13304858, Almost made this exact post in the Lesson, but knew
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Jan-04-19 10:42 PM

how it would go haha.

Obviously they aren't close to Kast. Which you clearly said in the OP, but okayplayers gotta okayplayer

They are dope. You missed House...Mick Jenkins rips it.

13305006, That song is a bop too
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Jan-07-19 10:34 AM
and lol yeah, I knew how it would start. But I was hoping that after a few tokprs we could move on.
13305018, Hot Take: If they added JiD to the group, they would be a force to be
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jan-07-19 10:49 AM
reckoned with. Dude flows with them so well and takes them to the next level.

13305053, I don't even think that's a hot take.
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Jan-07-19 11:57 AM
They work really well together. But I get the feeling their different approaches to making music wouldn't lend well to them actually being in a group together on a personal level.
13305253, Thanks for this post
Posted by las raises, Tue Jan-08-19 12:11 AM
I like what I hear so far
13306189, Yeah this a good old fashion OKP Solid Recommendation
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Jan-11-19 02:20 PM
It's been a while.

I am liking a lot of their stuff. My only diss is their are a few tracks where dude seems to go too hard at doing an Andre3000 impression.

But other than that. Digging alot.

This joint house is repeat

OutKast was rappin' their asses off...I didn't hear any bars in that first link

PASS.
13346092, Yeah I hear Paak

13345901, MirrorLand FINALLY dropping on Friday 9.6
Posted by Hitokiri, Sun Sep-01-19 11:44 PM
The studio version of UP came out last week
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MmLJa37zAs

and the Ready To Die just dropped tonight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_J1VBssh1I
13345905, I'm not big on the "Up" joint. "Stuck" is nice tho.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Mon Sep-02-19 02:32 AM
They have another joint called "Voodoo" that I like.

Someone else recommended "Up" to me, and it does very little for me... to the point that I never even bothered to check out anymore of their music until now. Apparently the Colors version is different from the original, and it also provides a visual. Neither version is noteworthy to me tho.

Overall they're an ok duo. I think they'll make better music once they calm down and hone their styles a bit more. Right now they just sound like two young niggas trying to be unique... which is nothing to hate on but doesn't necessarily make good music in and of itself. I appreciate their thoughtfulness tho.

13345909, I saw them open for Smino a few months ago
Posted by atruhead, Mon Sep-02-19 07:49 AM
they are nothing like Outkast to me

not bad at rapping really, but the sound of the music isn't aesthetically what Im into
13345914, I wonder when the wheel is going to break..
Posted by double 0, Mon Sep-02-19 09:36 AM
Kinda about EG and JID but kinda not...

We need a new Tyler the Creator or something... been too many years...

So many young artists are REALLY good at being in the genre of another artist but can't take it the next step to break free and innovate...

Outkast was biting Pharcyde & Souls Of Mischief but was soo innovative in the way they executed it that even if you were kinda familiar with the flows it was groundbreaking.

All these projects are extremely pleasant to listen to. I am SUPER glad they exist...

but we currently end up with a lot of sounds-kinda-like and is GREAT for the playlist but doesn't definitely stand on its own.

13345994, Yeah, the dope thing about Outkast is you never would have guessed
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Sep-03-19 09:26 AM
ATLiens or Aquemini was in them simply from

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik which was really good, but just really good standard southern album.

Most great artist start off as genre copycats then find their own groove and innovate like you describe.

I think the fight for a lot of young artists is going to be to find the silence and space to craft some wholly different ideas not connected to all this shit going on...

I love that Cole and Kendrick simply go away after every project promo run. I think its why Solange gave us such a dope album AFTER she left Brooklyn.
13346577, good point.. they need to get away and get creative
Posted by jimi, Fri Sep-06-19 09:27 AM
without any outside influences.. aka no distractions (cut off social media too)

@silentintellect
13345974, When you say they sound like 'Kast what era they remind you of most?
Posted by normal35762, Mon Sep-02-19 11:06 PM
ATLiens? Aquemini? Stankonia? Other?

When I read or hear they remind folks of 'Kast I automatically think ATLiens era.

Im at work and the internet on my phone is hella slow but I will check out when I get home.

Posted by CherNic, Tue Sep-03-19 06:38 AM
And no I haven’t listened to anything
13346573, I'm digging this Mirrorland album
Posted by Oak27, Fri Sep-06-19 09:11 AM
BOTH members have the same Chance the Rapper vibe though and I have trouble telling them apart. Maybe they'll stick out a bit more as I listen more, but Clipse dropped over 15 years ago and I still have trouble differentiating Pusha and Malice on those albums haha
13346590, yeah this is it right here
Posted by Amritsar, Fri Sep-06-19 10:22 AM
13346603, Yeah so, MirrorLand is fire
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Sep-06-19 11:31 AM
The flows, choruses, production are all airtight. Gotta dive into the lyrics more, but definitely one of the best hip hop albums of the year.
13346737, i made a Post Kast playlist a while ago
Posted by spitfire, Sat Sep-07-19 08:39 AM
had to put some EG in there:

13346755, the production on a lot of their joints are a nice surprise
Posted by DunDaDa, Sat Sep-07-19 10:35 PM
Both MCS can spit too. I'm on board.
13346795, I turned that Mirrorland album off halfway through the first verse
Posted by spirit, Sun Sep-08-19 08:05 PM
First dude to rhyme on Mirrorland kept using the B word so much, I cut it off about ten lines in. I don’t like hearing ordinary words get repeated, let alone misogynist ones. There is so much rap content out there that if somebody can’t make it through a verse without leaning on any given word every few lines, I’d rather listen to someone who spends more time crafting their verses.

And they aren’t OutKast. Maybe a miscellaneous Big Boi album track LOL

I stumbled on a random Spillage Village song that was pretty good but already forgot the title. They have some potential so I wish them luck. Maybe I’ll check back in a few years from now.

13346798, Wait. What? Halfway through the first song?
Posted by Hitokiri, Sun Sep-08-19 08:55 PM
The word bitch appears 4 times in that song. 3 times from Olu and Doc. 1 time from the woman in the interlude. I'm not mad at being averse to misogynistic content, but you're gonna hafta be honest about what was actually in the track lol
