The republican party is Trump now. Republican voters want the same things Trump wants. They approve of the way he acts, the things he says, the things he does.

If you explicitly distance yourself from him, what are you doing? You are cutting yourself off from the a large portion of Republican voters.
Where are you going to make up the loss? By getting democrats to switch over? Cmon.

If you are a republican, the only way to survive is to go full Trump. There is no room for moderates or Trump critics.

This doesn't necessarily explain Mia Love's loss. She had issues of her own outside the Trump criticism. But I don't think it helped.
