When I deployed to Germany as a young 18 yr old in the Army, I learned that he official and legal drinking age started at 16. I was excited and soon became a young off the chain alcohol pro with a rock gut.

Anyway, while in country, I was introduced to three drinks that I am embarrassed to admit that I used to toss them back like work in the club.

1. Bacardi 151 with Coke on the Rocks
2. A Screaming Orgasm. Why not. It sounded fun and I was young.
3. A Sex On The Beach. See the trend. Plus they put Beer in it and it looked cool. Liquor and Beer... Ummmm I was Wilding out.

I remember at a fraternity formal I drank about a dozen of them and got really shitfaced. Today I really don't like any element of it, the sticky sweet Kahlua, the milk (which almost never belongs in a cocktail) or the usually from-the-well vodka that makes it taste fucked up. But then I fancied it a sophisticated thing to drink and a segue into Lebowski references. Come to think of it that weekend was full of drugs. The first day we ate a huge bag of shrooms and made a huge mess with bubble bath in the jacuzzi, the next night we had an E party then at the actual formal I got too drunk to remember if we continued doing other shit afterward.

I would drink with my HS buddies behind the elementary school in Baltimore. They only drank Cisco or MD 20/20 when they wanted to rouse trouble and knock heads. That was my cue. They knew I was trying to go to college.

Though I still treat myself to a Pilsner Urquell from time to time, I spend most of my home drinking with Bota Box's RedVolution just because of the value (and the flavor isn't bad, even for a budding French/German wine snob like me) so the only time I'm really having a beer is after work with co-workers, and it's just sort of a reflex to get the High Life and a shot of Fernet Branca.


I'm also a big fan of Coors Banquet, to be honest, though that can again be attributed to my neighborhood bar that has the Sam Elliott on their menu ($6 for a CB tallboy and the daily kind-of-OK shot of whiskey).

We got a case and drank them behind the YMCA and then tried to walk to the church night at our community center where my mom and all our friends and fam were.

We never made it. By the time we got there it was over. It was hot, we were sloppy drunk and the foster kid who stayed with us was black out drunk.

We fought each other over whether to take him home or let him sleep it off. It was a mess, whole time he is throwing up on himself. Girls crying and begging us to do shit but we are all drunk and dumb.

Finally my mom found us and cursed me out and made me sit with him at the hospital. They swore he had drugs because he was out of it but dude was 4-11’ and 80lbs wet.

Next day my mom made me clean up the back yard because I refused to snitch on who got us the beer. Dude finally gets out of the hospital and said he had a great time.

Just went over, the old heads at the alumni house are setting us all up, showing us how it's done. I used to go hard and drink straight back then. That ole pink cap bottle was so lonely that night so I kept it company. I am surprised I didn't tear my stomach lining.

Usually on poker night. It almost tastes like Orangina. I knew is wasn't a very classy move, but I guess that was the point.

Shit just made everyone angry after a while.

Even as an appetizer to get you drunk faster, it's still not worth it. Awful.

By my sophomore year I was already a beer snob, used to drink that UniBroue shit from Quebec all the time. That stuff would get you tore up though, the bottle was like 750 ML but it was drinking four beers with a nice edge to it.

Me and my homeboy used to hit the local spot and get two 22 oz RRs for 2.00.

I think that was the first time I really felt what it was like to feel good from alcohol

There's just no class at all to it, all it says is you don't care about the flavor of your liqueur. When I worked at the cocktail lounge, I used to LOVE that certain people would come over from the dive across the street and order a Mid-Shelf/Top-Shelf Long Island, though; same with Margaritas or Mint Juleps. The sort of drinks all the flavors mix in such a way that it doesn't matter a whole lot what your base spirit is, or in the case of the Long Island your roster of spirits; you're just going to taste the mixer and get fucked up.


I DO admire people that order a Texas Tea though because those people truly don't give a fuck about themselves or anyone else around them and there's a certain strength of character in that I think when it comes to drinking.

Or the "everything's a -tini" phase. By the time I was seriously in the bar world, any place worth their salt was at the very least nodding to all the revived classics if not kickstarting their own craft programs.


But when I was FIRST drinking, mostly at home while working on college papers and research, I got into craft beer pretty early (easy stuff like Big Sky's Moose Drool Brown Ale and Lagunitas' Lil' Sumpin' Wild) but was absolute TRASH with liquor for a long time. My go-to was Paul Masson from the CVS with some coke, unless the E&J was on sale in which case that was the move.

I had a Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey phase as well, but it was just right-above-trash brandy almost 24/7 unless I was treating myself to some good craft beer. That was really only my age-22 and age-23 seasons, though; by 24, I was already catching shifts behind the stick at my local cocktail lounge and getting into Sazeracs, Last Words and Martinezes.

Oh, Bud Ice was my boy's tall-boy of choice when I worked at a Jimmy John's and I put up with it, but I'm pretty sure I hated it even then. We would just sit around the corner after work and kill two while testing out our subwoofers and smoking a blunt though, lol.

Though there was a day in college where me and my boy had a “job” through a friend in the student gov. where we got paid for “guarding” the hot tub in the football stadium that they put there for some promotion for the next day’s game. We showed up with backpacks full of food and 40’s and got faded in the bleachers. Just hanging out, talking shit and joking around, while getting paid for it.

Mickey's, OE and those fucking 99 cent 32-ounce bottles of Schlitz. We definitely fancied ourselves the crew from Menace II Society but the crew from Don't Be a Menace was more like it.
