13273247, I dunno, 160 shows a year doesn't sound like that much to me. #DesusAndMero

I know y'all read Viceland kicked them off the air 2 months before their contract ended because they were mad they signed a showtime deal.

Desus and Mero did a Bossip interview saying Viceland wanted 160 shows from them and it was just them two, no writers.

I feel like 160 sounds like a lot but that's only 3 shows a week.

They should have paid them more but folks really out here mad about the amount of shows but I don't think they are really crushing the numbers.
13273248, 4 shows a week for 40 weeks is A LOT of television content.

13273250, 4 shows a week, and they film 2+ hrs a day
Posted by Nabs, Tue Jul-10-18 08:42 PM
lots end up cut and on the floor. That's a lot with minimal breaks.
13273302, RE: 4 shows a week, and they film 2+ hrs a day <- that's it?
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Jul-11-18 08:33 AM
Vice should've cut the check (cause i damn sure watch a lot less of Vice now that the show aint on) but it has to be more than 2 hrs of work per day to get the show poppin.
13273256, They weren't upset about 160 shows....
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Jul-10-18 09:17 PM
They were upset at 160 shows at whatever Vice was offering to pay them.

You're trying to make it look like a work ethic/laziness kind of thing ("only 3 shows a week") when it's really a money thing. I bet if Vice upped the pay enough, they'd be willing to do 4-5-6 shows a week
13273259, That’s a lot of shows.
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jul-10-18 09:39 PM
and it’s not like they are a band doing the same songs.

Fuck you, pay me is the motto. Vice gave them a shot and they crushed it.
13273313, Thanks for your opinion on what it takes to produce a tv show.

and we don't know the price point.

They also have the podcast, which they give us for FREE.99

160 shows is a lot of funny to give ONE channel that ain't promised to even survive.

Vice is low-key sputtering to remain relevant and profitable.

13273327, That is an INSANE amount of work.
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Jul-11-18 09:40 AM
Do you think they show up and just rant into cameras for 21 minutes and that’s a show?

Late night shows are 4 nights a week, but the hosts are some of the highest paid on TV. I’d venture to say Viceland isn’t paying what NBC is. But they’ve also got huge staffs, large writers rooms, etc and that is STILL an incredibly hard job that’s broken many a person.

D&M’s magic is that they are “effortlessly” funny - but most people don’t realize how much work it is to make it seem like they’re just showing up and talking. As low fi as the show is - it’s still 12+ hour days to make each episode, not to mention all the ancillary stuff (tours, talk shows, interviews, etc) to keep the brand strong.

The moral here is that TV shows are an immense amount of work and the day doesn’t end when the cameras turn off. 160 shows a year is insane - worse when you figure they’re making a fraction of what they just got from Showtime

Posted by Marauder21, Wed Jul-11-18 10:29 AM
That's an insane task and they were right to not want to keep doing it for a company notorious for a company culture that (among other things) emphasizes paying people as little as you can for as much work as you can get from them.
13273347, probably your dumbest post on OKP. definitely top 3.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Jul-11-18 10:31 AM
the main point to take out of that article was this:

they network is so reliant on them that they are telling them they can't take time off because if they do the network ratings dip too far.

ANYTIME a job is telling you you're so valuable that you can't get time off? it's time to go have that value realized, because you're current employer isn't doing that.

this isn't even taking into account other issues going on at Vice.
13273350, Dude STFU. I know you in real life don't be a dick.

Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Jul-11-18 11:54 AM
putting them out there?

real petty

They got plenty of other content not sure what they were bitter about

Also with an emphasis hopefully at Showtime on quality over quantity, I know desus joke-writing can shine. Both these guys would be better served long-term career-wise with a chance to prepare their content more and get beyond the two guys in the living room box. Plus I sense a real potential for emotional range and depth from Mero, dead ass, son.
13273561, vice is imploding
Posted by Riot, Wed Jul-11-18 03:54 PM
and shoulda collapsed even earlier, when everybody found out shane is a billionaire and the entire rest of the company lives off protein bars and grabbing the female writers' nipples
13273568, which makes me sad and feel kinda weird about things
Posted by double negative, Wed Jul-11-18 04:05 PM
because vice...the old vice, the old vice of Dos and Don'ts fame is what shaped my worldview as a late teen/early 20s year old man

I've been sad seeing what in the fuck it is Gavin became when he left

I feel weird seeing what Vice has become and knowing that the old version of itself is an echo of an echo. It went from shaping hipster culture in the early 00s to trying to maintain a hipster edge while being Vox lite.
13273615, the o.g . hipsters got old and rich. it happens w/ every arena of art.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Jul-11-18 06:51 PM
but you're right. early 00's VICE was INCREDIBLE.

13273624, Every person wants to be rich.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jul-11-18 07:27 PM
and most hipsters or progressives will become the rich assholes they swore they would never be once they make it.

Especially once they see those taxes taking their wealth.

13273636, it was entertaining, but it also had a tendency towards terrible
Posted by rob, Wed Jul-11-18 10:11 PM
dos and donts being a great example.

13273635, Gavin is apparently the "least rich" of that crew
Posted by Riot, Wed Jul-11-18 09:53 PM
By several dozens or hundreds of millions,
And the most right-wing troll

Warren Buffett And i guess most of Hollywood entertainers,
Also manage to be rich and not (publicly) (politically) full on trumpkins

Soo yea, can't buy the "hipsters age into rich douchenozzles by default" thing
13273683, If you looked real close at '99 era Vice there was problematic shit
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu Jul-12-18 07:36 AM
in the shadows for sure though

And after reading the type of comments I would see on the website (particularly in a Do's and Don'ts that somebody I knew was featured in as a Do) it helped me put together who their demographic was
13273727, Wellllllllllll, kinda, yes.
Posted by double negative, Thu Jul-12-18 09:52 AM
they kinda lead the charge with ironic racism, sexism, columbusing, etc all under the guise of edginess

which is why I think the vice of today took a look at the writing on the wall and realized shit had to change or die.

edit: Yo, didnt' Mero used to write for them as a record reviewer?!

Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Jul-12-18 01:39 AM
Desus & Mero, gone to a better deal. Bong Appetit might be done for, too. At least "FUCK, THAT'S DELICIOUS" is back for another season. On the website side they also cheap out, like Vice Sports cut all its stringer budget and now overworks their staffers like crazy. A lot of the shit could be *so* much better if they didn't skimp so much on it. Some of the hosts seem like college kids who did it for a Luna bar and a bus ticket.
13273781, I remember checking out a job at Vice several years back

13273652, "Only" three shows a week?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Jul-12-18 01:37 AM
It's four shows with weeks off as you know, but that seems like a lot to me, man. They were the whole f'ing show (c) Rob Van Damme, basically had two or three crew members, no writers. Sounds like mad work to me. I hate that Viceland spited them and robbed us of another 30-ish shows. This makes sense though because the finale was mad slapped together, it was like TUNE IN TOMORROW ... OH YEAH SHIT'S OVER, HIT THIS BOTTLE AND SAY G'BYE, EL PRESIDENTE!!!
13273671, If they were freestyling shows with no guests or prep: yeah
Posted by flipnile, Thu Jul-12-18 06:41 AM
