13272156, Is Jay-Z Corny To You?

if so...when did he become corny? was there a definitive turning point in your eyes?

13272160, Do you have a definition for "corny"?
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Jul-05-18 05:35 PM
People mean different things by it, and nobody ever wants to give a definition... which makes it seem to me like folks don't wanna own up to what they mean by it.
13272172, the definition/standard is subjective. 'to you' = personal opinion.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-05-18 05:58 PM
13272175, Ok, cool. Do you have a *personal* definition for the word "corny"?

13272289, Lol, respect...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jul-06-18 09:45 AM
probably looks like I'm just being an asshole to some, but I find the way we use that word among black folks to be kinda problematic in the vast majority of instances.
13272297, its a completely subjective question. im neutral.
Posted by Reeq, Fri Jul-06-18 10:08 AM
13272352, I see. What inspired this particular pic to be coupled with this post?
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jul-06-18 12:49 PM
Seems suggestive...
or did you just think "ppl might find this corny, but I'm neutral" ?
13272357, its just a meme thats been floating around lately.
Posted by Reeq, Fri Jul-06-18 01:08 PM
i saw the comments on it and brought the discussion here.

somewhere around 2000...ish...

MFers were killing themselves to get a Jay co-sign as some sort of taste maker hood card pass carte blanch to the culture figure

I wouldn't call it corny

Good business for him

More like nauseating from a consumer
13272165, not to change the direction...
Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 05:48 PM
did you catch Will Smith interview on Tidal?
he spoke about being corny, rather being called that by folks.
it was a good interview...

I don’t think Jay is. I enjoy the man he’s become....

13272173, was that where the clip i see floating around is from?
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-05-18 06:00 PM
where will is talking about jay calling him after he slapped dude in russia? lol
13272183, He spoke about authenticity...
Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 06:55 PM
He spoke about how social media forces you to maintain it and how people always challenged his positivity.

check it out...It’s a good interview
13272301, thanks, I meed to find this. Will Smith is the perfect example
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jul-06-18 10:30 AM
I'm sure I thought he was corny before Summertime and definitely after Getting Jiggy With It.

But that dude is an inspiration

Black men work so hard tearing each other down and shitting on positive when it comes to rap content.. it's almost like it's a conspiracy.

13272388, dude. Tidal has some of the best interviews...
Posted by Trinity444, Fri Jul-06-18 02:14 PM
playlists too

stay woke :-)

13272185, I don't find him corny either, really.
Posted by Brew, Thu Jul-05-18 06:59 PM
>I don’t think Jay is. I enjoy the man he’s become....

Me too. People question his motivations but I loved what he did with all the 4:44 videos and the sitdowns he had with various people/artists about black community issues and relationship issues and shit like that.

To that end I also love that he's kinda taken a role in the fight for equality with all the documentaries he's been working on for Trayvon Martin, and Kalief Browder and things like that. A good use of his platform IMO.
13272207, right...
Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 08:32 PM
those videos were everything...

13272167, nah he just "grown" now

13272169, hes not corny, hes just 100% out of his element 95% of the time
Posted by double negative, Thu Jul-05-18 05:53 PM
dude is just living a different life from his roots and origins

i think he has a limited context and when taken out of it (i.e. presenting as rapper from a certain era, from a certain hood, in a certain style) it just feels kinda off.

at the same time...3 kids and 48 years old. No one with those stats is cool.

Even David Bekam looks washed if you look at him for more than 9 seconds. You can see it.

Buuuut I don't think its corniness, it's just...at a point the shit that made you cool as a 20 something and 30 something is the same shit that leads to everything falling apart. There are a million ways to age into a different kind of cool but its different from the stuff that got him on the map.

13272178, maybe not corny, but definitely washed
Posted by shygurl, Thu Jul-05-18 06:29 PM

13272283, This essay on being "washed" in GQ spoke to me.
Posted by Overqualified, Fri Jul-06-18 09:20 AM
He references Jay a bit as an avatar of "washed-ness", but not so much in the sense of being corny - but in coming to terms with the man you are now later in life, as opposed to the young gunner who was always on the cutting edge of coolness and obsessed with whatever your definition of success was. In my late 30s and dealing with my own relevance, it resonated.

"And now here we all are: washed. Jay-Z's latest record, 4:44, was basically a catalog of all the things—the vulnerable feelings, the unflattering secrets, the self-doubt—he wouldn't allow himself to talk about on his 12 prior solo records. He made late-period albums such as 2013's Magna Carta Holy Grail, trying to convince all of us that he was still a world-beating giant. That everything was fine. But everything was not fine. I don't pop molly, I rock Tom Ford. You do what now? I was relieved when I heard 4:44. It's not a masterpiece—I think those are mostly behind Jay. But frankly he seems happier. He's out here demonstrating, in work and in life, how to act when the world that you once held in the palm of your hand starts to spin on without you."

Nothing wrong with being corny tho.

You're also falling a very short distance, like 3-4 feet into the water. It would be more dangerous to jump off a diving board probably, and i don't see anyone wearing helmets to do that.
13272331, its probably enforced by the jet ski rental company
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jul-06-18 11:59 AM
but I guess that's corny too

wearing helmets and shit
13272354, Safety is mad "corny" yo
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jul-06-18 01:01 PM
Wearing condoms, helmets... all protection is corny
b/c preserving negro life is lame
There's no way a system of white supremacy programmed that into us tho.
There's no way we've internalized the way the system views us.
We decided we're worth nothing, because we're "cool" like that.

Plus... if it is indeed enforced by the rental company, he'd definitely be penalized, b/c ppl are gonna photograph him if he's in public. I guess it's corny for him to even be concerned with such things too tho.
13272398, Y'all rushing in with the snark without having thought it through
Posted by flipnile, Fri Jul-06-18 02:35 PM
A helmet for the water bruh? What's there to hit his head on, besides the jet-ski?

Have you ever been on a jet ski before? I have. Never used or saw anyone using a jet ski. Several times. Pretty hard to flip those over without huge waves to jump.

Also, it's a QUESTION. Y'all came with the teeth-sucking, eye-rolling snark tho. Kinda sad, bruh. Hope this heat ain't got y'all all angry and confused.
13272409, You can't ride a high horse while namecalling bruh.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jul-06-18 02:56 PM
>A helmet for the water bruh? What's there to hit his head on,
>besides the jet-ski?

Looks like you answered your own question.
Maybe he was taking extra precautions b/c it was his first time and he cares about his safety. Does that make him corny? You say we rushed in with snark, but you rushed in to call him corny.

>Also, it's a QUESTION.

Followed by a statement which reads:
"And folks in here questioning why dude's considered corny."
So you're side-eyeing peoples' questions but they can't side-eye yours?
Does the heat have you projecting with these double standards?
I'm in the air-conditioning lol.

even with money he never wanted to DO active things...

All the stuff he is doing now is considered WPS and the cats from his era that you see on the train (still rocking roc a wear jeans and shopping at jimmy jazz) are the same type dude.

It comes out July 30th on Paramount Network, not BET.

And yes I absolutely believe there are folks with power and resources attacking Jay-z and numerous other blacks in any and every way they can.

SEC, Tidal hit pieces etc...

You think it's ridiculous? Have you forgotten the Russian troll farms used on black lives matter and Kaepernick etc Al, that are still going on?

13272501, yo wtf are they talking about? unpredictable? open water unforgiving?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sat Jul-07-18 06:42 PM
A jet ski is pretty goddamn predictable and the worst thing that can happen in general is that you flip the thing over (which I did once lol). At no point have I ever experienced or seen something where I'd need a helmet. I guess in a straight up crash it might be helpful but not really. I can't see the wisdom in it plus you don't get all that wind running over you, which feels awesome.

Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sun Jul-08-18 04:59 PM
i dunno how much a bucket would have done there. a life vest is essential though, just a great luxury to have especially if you get into an accident and/or are far from the shore. when i flipped one over my girlfriend was on the back and she freaked out. i explained to her that the vests would keep us float and in both directions we had land (a little key on one side, the shore on the other) so we could just do nothing and we'd reach safety. she chilled out, which was good because we were fairly far in both directions. soon after someone came and got us.
13272577, Agree
Posted by go mack, Sun Jul-08-18 03:03 PM
I've been on a jet ski, seen a hundred or more people ride them and never saw anyone ever wear a helmet on one. lol Snowmobile I can see helmet but jet ski and a sitdown one at that. naw. Now maybe like pros that go 100mph or something but this looks like just a regular one. You fall into the water, the engine stops as soon as you fall in as well, pretty safe. Never see people water skiing with helmets either.
13272585, The only thing is if you crash but IMO you have to be reckless, unlucky
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sun Jul-08-18 04:55 PM
probably both.

My cousin crashed one in Israel, he hit like a reef or some other rock formation. Not to blame the victim but he is pretty spacey. I guess he could have used a helmet though he didn't hurt his head, he did break a couple of ribs though.

Posted by EAS, Fri Jul-06-18 09:45 PM
wylin' out. We just want hits about fuckin' mad bitches, spending large amounts of cash irresponsibly, how good you are at flippin' weight and knowing someone that could get you murked. Thank god we will always have 50 Cent for that.

4:44 was such a mature album for the type of artist he is. No bangers, 1 guest appearance and he was just on the hook, and one producer for the whole album.

I am corny too so I love seeing Jay-Z take that route. Sometimes I am in disbelief when I revisit the album because that album, to me, was career suicide for a pop rapper.

Hip hop is being yourself in all aspects of your life and not being afraid. If corny is apart of it, then so be it.

Common went left field on Electric Circus.
Kanye went left on 808's
Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) went left on mostly everything after BOBS.
Pharoahe Monch
and now surprisingly Jay-Z (as far left as a pop rapper could get)
13272504, Cool for a middle-aged, married man with three kids.

As a brother who is Hov's age, I can appreciate that he is not trying super hard to be "young" cool. There's nothing worse than the old dude trying too hard.

He's kind of showing the way, how someone who grew up on hip-hop, and still loves hip-hop, can remain in hip-hop without looking foolish.
13272560, Well if we're being honest he *tried* to be young cool ...
Posted by Brew, Sun Jul-08-18 11:38 AM
... and failed miserably, multiple times, and only then did he switch up his approach. But I guess better late than never. Haha.

13272603, when hasn't that turkey not been corny?
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Jul-08-18 08:37 PM
if that turkey wasn't from New York he would be dumpster diving with Domino.

he got a few joints i like and he has personality on stage, however that turkey ain't hardly worth half the hype he has gotten
13272872, the double negative voids your attempted point.
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Jul-09-18 03:28 PM
13273730, turkey what does double negative mean in english?
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Jul-12-18 09:59 AM

13273237, Damn what did Domino do to get this slander?!
Posted by Adwhizz, Tue Jul-10-18 06:45 PM
13273731, Domino was a fake West Sidddeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from the Lou
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Jul-12-18 10:00 AM
thats how the acting of Jigga is
13272695, I've never liked his image
Posted by infin8, Mon Jul-09-18 10:09 AM
once the curtain came up, and it became obvious 'these nxggas kinda lyin', I just hated him cause he didn't LOOK like the nxgga he claimed to be.

he don't look like he can fight.

he don't look like a shooter.

he don't have the 1000-mile stare, like institutionalized nxggas have.

so yeah....I found him corny. I hear he's 'verified' but it never quite caught on with me.

I wouldn't tell him to his face tho, LOL.
13272706, ha.. you just described Beanie Seagal
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jul-09-18 10:19 AM
and trust me, no one wants a raper to be THAT REAL irl.

13272716, 1,000 mile stare lol
Posted by Amritsar, Mon Jul-09-18 10:32 AM
that sums a LOT of rapper's careers
13272852, Yeh looks like he could be robbed for his stacks so easily
Posted by Reuben, Mon Jul-09-18 02:36 PM
And the era he claiming he was hustling it was the damn wild west compared to now,

I just don't buy any of his shit
13273011, dude was rolling with some heavy hitters tho. the type of cats who dont
Posted by mikediggz, Tue Jul-10-18 08:57 AM
just roll with anybody
13273131, man.. I don't like this shit at all
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jul-10-18 01:18 PM
not saying dude wasn't legit but I hate how we need these dudes to be all the way live

shit is kind of depressing.

and they have to LOOK like it too

we had a dude at my job years before I got here who they said was 5'-4" old as shit and looked fragile as fuck and they found out he ran the biggest mexican gang in Charlotte at the time.

not sure why we need dudes to look the part. This aint the movies.

if you know people, you know people..

and I'm not saying Jay is/was THAT dude
13273189, that book by its cover shit is real. i learned a long time ago...
Posted by mikediggz, Tue Jul-10-18 03:21 PM
not to sleep on anybody. the nigga making the most noise often aint who he wants to look like he is and the dude in the cut being overlooked could be the don. im smart enough to realize that if a cat like Klein had Jay sittin shotgun (which has been documented by several ppl including Klein himself) it wasnt by accident. Jay told us he was 17 sittin on around a milly. all thgs considered i got no reason to doubt him...AND he was willing to take the charge when shit went left. in a documentary Mr Cee said Jay had major money since before he met him and before any of the hiphop shit. alll that being said i do chuckle alil bit when i look at some of the younger pics of Jay...he doesnt really look like a killer lol.

13273215, I agree, but LOOK AT THESE DUDES
Posted by infin8, Tue Jul-10-18 04:45 PM
they wouldn't do it if a certain section wasn't buying into it.

I'm feeling like most of the cats in this discussion remember

KEEPING IT REAL

the crazier nxggas looked, the more it worked.

Gunplay, anyone?
13273743, I hear you..
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jul-12-18 10:29 AM
reminds me of a friend back home. No hand skills at all but he knew how to play up his crazy.

Dude would challenge 12 guys to a fight.. at the same damn time and no one would take him on because he had that crazy eye.

but he couldn't fight at all.

Strong as shit tho.. and crazy as hell.

13272719, i dont think he was ever cool or corny. then he got old.
Posted by Government Name, Mon Jul-09-18 10:34 AM
13272804, Corny and liberated
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Mon Jul-09-18 12:55 PM
He must've been a little apprehensive about riding the thing... the cool way to handle the situation would be to either be reckless (in his opinion) or to not do it at all.

He was going to ride that jet ski how HE felt comfortable, image be damned.

13272811, lol. thanks papi...
Posted by Trinity444, Mon Jul-09-18 01:08 PM

13272855, he's def corny but it's all good...
Posted by gumz, Mon Jul-09-18 02:40 PM
he basically remained stone faced his whole life up until now...the image of him that we saw up to this point is likely the image he had to keep up in the street...now he's made it and can afford to look kinda stupid doing stuff which is hilarious and kinda dope. he survived long enough to put his guard down a bit.

he's still gonna get these jokes though
13274416, ^ this.
Posted by flipnile, Mon Jul-16-18 07:40 AM
Nothing wrong with being corny, it is what it is.
13272904, He seems happy as shit lately more than anything
Posted by kwez, Mon Jul-09-18 04:43 PM
Corny? I don't know. That's a pretty subjective thing.

An interesting exercise is to ask yourself honestly if you think there are people that find *you* corny.

If you think "no" it's most likely you've been "frontin" your whole life.

13273128, happy niggas tend to be corny
