13271469, A Handmaid's Tale... Posted by Trinity444, Sun Jul-01-18 01:35 PM
anyone watching this? Wednesday's on Hulu Canada is heaven and there's no more United States...
I can't imagine living in complete submission of a government. thank God I'm old...they can't use me, lol. really tho, it got me thinking if I would have the guts to live through such circumstances. I don't think I would...like, I'll be trying everything to get killed.
just keeping it real :-)

13271476, are you up to date?? I have feeling next episode will be most heartbreaking. Posted by mellowboogie, Sun Jul-01-18 04:12 PM

I think something going to happen to the Waterford’s. I’m still not sure if he knows he’s not really the father...

Haven't watched it, obviously.

13271575, I actually typed Evangelical but backspaced Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jul-02-18 11:01 AM
I didn't know what word to use to describe those who are legit crazy so I went with Scientology.
|
13271577, I hear ya. Posted by Pete Burns, Mon Jul-02-18 11:14 AM
Anyway, like you said, the show is tough going. I think it's really really good but, damn, shit is heartbreaking to sit through.
Fun fact: the voice on the radio when Offred is in the car is Oprah.
|
13271579, Christians? Posted by J_Stew, Mon Jul-02-18 11:18 AM
nothing in any of the world's established religions is in any way, shape, or form, less crazy than Scientology.
|
13271930, nothing's happening in Gilead that Christians haven't pulled before Posted by rob, Wed Jul-04-18 07:34 PM
(that's not a condemnation of all Christians, although we're not having a great 2018)
that's the point.
they're not crazy. they're just deep in their own shit.

13271631, Aunt Lydia may be the craziest character on the show Posted by las raises, Mon Jul-02-18 02:37 PM
|
13271682, Aunt Lydia? Posted by astralblak, Mon Jul-02-18 09:46 PM
there is gaggles of white men raping women cause THEY ARE infertile while their wives are forced to participate / "watch", killing each other because they don't trust each other, hanging people all over the damn city, beating the shit out of women who CAN have babies if they say or do the wrong thing, organizing secret brothels while still trying to build their psychotic christian civilization, and did I mention the hangings and the raping...
Yes Aunt Lydia deserves to be knifed slowly to death, but she ain't as bad as Waterford and his team of political sociopaths.
|
13271688, She's the wicked stepmother that trains these women Posted by las raises, Mon Jul-02-18 11:19 PM
To be slaves and goes nuts if it isn't done right
|
13271696, Man, when she cried before ringing the bell Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jul-03-18 06:58 AM
I thought it was because she knew shit was fucked up but I think it was tears of joy.
Iont know. She is the slave hand that keep everyone in line. Not sure she is truly evil or just surviving.
|
13271706, I think she really believes Posted by Marauder21, Tue Jul-03-18 08:20 AM
>Not sure she is truly evil or just surviving.
It may have started as a survival mechanism, but I think she now genuinely believes in her mission. People will rationalize anything if they're convinced it's "for the kids."
|
13271882, It’s weird... Posted by Trinity444, Tue Jul-03-18 11:03 PM
I try to place myself there...that life...that world so I can understand the mindset of these people like. is their life some form of survival of the fittest?
I might be overthinking lol but it’s so much I don’t understand...
|
13272325, She was probably powerless in the old society now she has power Posted by Tw3nty, Fri Jul-06-18 11:47 AM
and the privilege of not being checked on her beliefs.
|
13271705, I'm glad it's once a week and not bingeable Posted by Marauder21, Tue Jul-03-18 08:19 AM
Because this shit is so bleak and depressing. It's good, but there's no way I could watch 3 of these in a row.
|
13271763, I watch on the stick but gave up this season Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jul-03-18 11:59 AM
I will return but damn sure won't binge watch
its too much
and its done too well to think its just a show
|
13271762, Man, this show is so oppressive, I feel like it's suffocating me Posted by kwez, Tue Jul-03-18 11:52 AM
It's just so fucking bleak and maddening.
Fucking brilliant television..and arguably the most beautifully shot series I've ever seen. Every damn frame is literally art.
Masterpiece.

13271767, That aerial shot of the funeral...ooh boy, brilliant! Posted by Pete Burns, Tue Jul-03-18 12:10 PM
I’ve said to a couple of friends that haven’t seen it that every single shot is amazing.
|
13271824, on my list.. not yet started tho. Posted by PG, Tue Jul-03-18 02:51 PM

13271971, If I'm not misaken Posted by Numba_33, Thu Jul-05-18 09:16 AM
the season finale airs next week. The most recent episode you watched was the 12th one, right? If so, that's the penultimate episode for this season.
|
13272041, Yeah I watched episode 12, I thought that was it Posted by las raises, Thu Jul-05-18 12:21 PM
I hope you're right
|
13272043, There is a 13th episode. I've seen the trailer. Posted by Pete Burns, Thu Jul-05-18 12:25 PM
|
13272060, what did you think of last night? Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 01:02 PM
that couple being drowned was deep. I recall her conversation with Offred about love so I’m assuming that’s why she felt that way. “grab love where you can find it”
then Emily. Her new house assignment seems like it’s going to be weird.
|
13272176, that ending made no sense Posted by rob, Thu Jul-05-18 06:16 PM
considering how they've bent over backwards (torture/conditioning/bargaining/surgery/new placements) for two ladies (one of whom just came through months of radiation farming) who've caused way more trouble just because they can give birth.
they're going to let a teenager go out like that over a crush? not even give an aunt a shot at turning her around?
that's shitty writing.
|
13272201, if gilead is governed by biblical principles... Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 08:13 PM
although I think many of the principles are misinterpretations, adultery would be a greater offense that required death. What was amazing to me is they were willing to die for their love. Part of me was sad for them...the other was like hell yeah lol
tough scene nonetheless...
|
13271929, i don't understand how the eden plot fits into gilead at all Posted by rob, Wed Jul-04-18 07:29 PM
last two episodes have been doing a lot with plot shenanigans.
|
13272292, Eden Represented all of the ideals of Gilead ***Spoilers**** Posted by TR808, Fri Jul-06-18 09:58 AM
She was a child born into the system and really believed in it until she got caught up with dude.
when nick told her to lie she was like I cant do that against God.
She was a real one...
unlike any of the others who would have lied to get out of the situation.
|
13272045, *The* It's "The Handmaid's Tale"... Posted by Pete Burns, Thu Jul-05-18 12:28 PM
Sorry but my pedantry won't allow me to have this go un-addressed.
Feel free to flame me etc...
|
13272056, it’s cool... Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-05-18 12:54 PM
it’s a fair point and I’m not offended :-)
in my mind, im building off the story itself not so much the true title of it. If that makes sense.lol It’s so much in this show I don’t know how to digest...
|
13272341, I hear ya. Respect. Posted by Pete Burns, Fri Jul-06-18 12:11 PM
|
13272322, I don't understand how they can exist without propaganda Posted by Tw3nty, Fri Jul-06-18 11:40 AM
There doesn't seem to be any media or symbology.
|
13272362, was their media or symbols when it came to slavery? Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jul-06-18 01:16 PM
seems like fear and pain is the best symbol for their propaganda
and dressing the same
|
13272384, how did Gilead come into existence? Posted by Trinity444, Fri Jul-06-18 02:09 PM
there were glimpses of it in a few episodes but it’s still unclear to me.
Like. The bombing when there was a gather of other world leaders. Gilead isn’t a super power...they’re try to recruit other nations on the idea of handmaids.
|
13272436, RE: how did Gilead come into existence? Posted by TR808, Fri Jul-06-18 05:31 PM

this only the second season... im sure they gonna circle back to some of this later on....
Im still trying to figure out the Colony stuff and what happened to make it so bad...lots of questions.
|
13273557, They talk about it vaguely and briefly in some episodes Posted by J_Stew, Wed Jul-11-18 03:37 PM
Pollution and industrialization got so bad that women (well we know now it's really the men) became infertile. That's one reason they were able to take things back to pre-technology phase for the most part. I think they were trying to trade handmaids for food/resources, and that's why the colonies where they send the "unwomen" are so toxic and deadly.
|
13273540, Hell of an episode to end the season Posted by las raises, Wed Jul-11-18 03:14 PM
I post anything until everyone watches
|
13273544, yeah. don’t say anything lol Posted by Trinity444, Wed Jul-11-18 03:18 PM
I’ll be back tonight...
|
13273632, I knew once she looked at the pic of her first daughter... Posted by Trinity444, Wed Jul-11-18 09:03 PM
she wasn’t going to leave.
Like. you can’t take one and leave the other especially since she promised she’d be back for her. Nothing is more powerful than a mother’s love...a courageous woman.
and Eden’s death was the jump off lol
Is aunt Lydia really dead?
talk about it...
|
13273742, How is she going to get Hannah back? Posted by las raises, Thu Jul-12-18 10:26 AM
She can't go back to the Waterford house, he just had his wife's finger cut off what will he do to her? Aunt Lydia not sure if she is dead and the home owner that got them out sounds like he helps most maids get out
|
13273790, They feel the need to stay in Gilead for Season 3 for some reason. Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-12-18 12:21 PM
Maybe so they can continue to dwell in its misery.
When in reality a Season 3 devoted to Canadians planning and executing a heist of June's kid would've been a lot more riveting than more waiting around in Gilead to see who gets raped and when. They already established earlier in Season 2 that June knows leaving is the best path to getting her kid back, as she'll have the freedom to operate, she'll have allies, resources, her husband, etc. She tried it once! (Not to mention the idea that she'd leave her baby right now in favor of an impossible path to success also goes against much of what we know about June.)
But nah. They want more Offred suffering in Gilead. Make her pay, get her beaten, lots of rape, etc. The show has a lot of good stuff but fuck it's maddening in other areas.
|
13273817, that's what causes revolt tho... Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-12-18 01:25 PM
the injustices... June is so damn courageous lol
|
13273930, they always leave moira dangling too. Posted by rob, Thu Jul-12-18 05:43 PM
i didn't like the last 10 minutes of either of the last two episodes, because they were more about setting up a transition to next season's shoots than trying to make sense of gilead.
but everything before those last scenes worked so ....
|
13273814, I believe June becomes the matriarch... Posted by Trinity444, Thu Jul-12-18 01:18 PM
going back to the conversation in the kitchen with Fred...I think she will take him up on the offer but, somehow sabotage it to free more women...girls. She's always been a rebel.
She'll free Hannah in that way...
|
13273803, RE: I knew once she looked at the pic of her first daughter... Posted by Pete Burns, Thu Jul-12-18 12:56 PM
>Is aunt Lydia really dead?
Nah, she ain't dead.
The very last shot of her is of her breathing/moving.
If she was dead there would be no doubt.

|
13274048, Has anyone read the book? Posted by Trinity444, Fri Jul-13-18 08:36 AM
back in the day Janey would of told my ass to read the book lol
but yeah... it can’t seem to stay on the shelf at the local library...in any format so I ordered it
/ I be asking myself what would I do if I were June...could I be June (Offred)? Like. where does that will to fight come from?
passion conviction or was she just born like that?
I’m stuck :-)
|
13274052, If you are a fan of the show Posted by Numba_33, Fri Jul-13-18 08:52 AM
it is a short and worthwhile read. Some sections are somewhat nebulous, but the book overall does a great job of getting inside June's head. At the same time, the show does wonders in expanding on the book.
Since you mention the book, I do wonder if Margaret Atwood (sp?) has any say in how the story is being told for this Hulu version. I don't see her name in my brief skimming of the post-show credits, so I suppose I already have my answer there.
|
13274054, I remember seeing her name in the credits Posted by 13Rose, Fri Jul-13-18 08:58 AM
Don't remember in what capacity tho. I plan on reading the book. Almost copped it the other day at the bookstore but put it on pause. Not sure if I'll get a physical or go Kindle.
|
13274055, thank you... Posted by Trinity444, Fri Jul-13-18 08:59 AM
I’ll going to look into the author’s thoughts on the movie too...
