13268358, HOAs and white people ... someone give me the strength
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 07:20 AM
Look I know that HOAs serve some degree of good, like keeping some folks from parking a boat in their front lawn or making sure nobody goes an entire season without cutting their grass ... I get that

I also know that they almost always take a poor direction.
Either being run by the petty, the dumb, the vindictive, and/or some combination of all of that.

But man. If there’s a group that didn’t need another means of enforcing THEIR rules, onto others, it’s American white people.
13268364, My coworker had to submit a app for his garden
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-21-18 07:34 AM
another friend of ours almost lost their house for making changes to the front of their house.

A third friend almost lost his house for not paying dues

another coworker was renting and said the HOA sent her a threatening letter to put a lien on the house due to unpaid dues. It's not her house so she didn't care but still, that shit sounds frightening

but with all that said, I can see how they can help your house appreciate due to clean looking neighborhood.

I would never live in an area with one.

13268370, A few months back a ho ass neighbor walked up to MIL to “give her a
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 07:51 AM
heads up”
Hey heads up I don’t think you can park in visitor more than three days in a row
I’m here visiting my grand daughter (she has a fast mouth, I wouldn’t have given that man a word)
Well what about other people that may need to use that spot
She says ok and that’s that.

I get home that day and I try talking to dude and he won’t make eye contact with me. I start trying to walk to him and he goes in the house. I didn’t have beef I just wanted to talk it out as neighbors are to do. And that he has no business talking to my guests.

But whatever. HOA rules say no parking for more than 72 consecutive hours for guests. Which she doesn’t. She shows up in the morning, parks in the visitor spot, then leaves when I get home.

The next day dude had parked in the spot before she got there. Which hey, it’s a visitor spot and he can definitely do that, when he moved his car though she put hers there ... because hey. Maybe you should talk to the neighbor rather than their smart mouth guest if you want a situation resolved

There was no more smoke after that.

Until yesterday when we received a letter from the HOA
Stating that it’s been reported that we have a daily visitor (not against the rules) using a spot (again not against the rules) and that this person is the baby sitter (a job) and so please stop immediately as it’s likely we leave to work anyways and she can park in one our spots (I metro or bike, my car barely moves)

My FIL happens to be the former president of his HOA and a realtor and my father is also a HOA board member at his spot, I’m good on responding to that. But here’s what I texted my wife:

What really picks at me in this situation and what I was saying about discrimination is that an HOA is used to protect residents. And in our situation, being residents, they didn’t even bother to evaluate the situation. They took a complaint from another due paying member (the fees are in our rent) and perscribed a corrective action without having or seeking a full set of facts. In which case having an HOA becomes arbitrary and just a tool of enforcement by some.
13268378, bruh... I would be furious styles over that shit
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-21-18 08:18 AM
when we rented they changed to rules at the pool. You needed a pool pass. We didn't know at the time and my cousin came back to the crib telling me some white dude yelled at him to get out of the pool and followed him back to the apartment.

Bruh, I walked all through the complex til I found dude and cussed his ass out.

It was the way he did it that had me pissed. Used his size to intimidate my lil cousin.

What makes your story upsetting is I bet dude has no use for that spot. Just being white and nosy as fuck.

------

We don't even have an HOA now but my neighbor came over and asked who's car was parked in front of MY HOUSE. It was my car. These ofays have 4 to 5 cars and always parking up and down the street. Man, I cold slammed the door in her face. I had to cuss her out too when she was beefing with my neighbor and admitted she called them a nigger. "Bitch if you EVER..." White people yo..smh.

13268382, White people love running to “the rules” because they don’t wanna
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 08:30 AM
compromise. They want to enforce.
I’m not about that. I know how that game is played. What’s toughest is that my wife is a notorious rule follower. So when she got the letter she starts working out all the logistics of accommodating and I’m like fuck that.
So now I gotta manage her but also my MiL. Because there’s a real possibility they illegally tow her and escalate the situation and she can EASILY make that situation worse.

13268380, I feel like a major perk of home ownership is freedom. HOA takes that away
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Thu Jun-21-18 08:20 AM
The freedom to do whatever you want to your property and whatever activities you want within your home.

I've seen some HOA's with such strict rules, it seems like folks are just renting.

Not the trade-off for me
13268383, I get them in condo/townhouse situations
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Jun-21-18 08:34 AM
But HOA's where every house is a single-family home have never made any sense to me.
13268384, According to Wikipedia they started to really grow in 1964 😒
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 08:38 AM
I can’t for the life of me understand what was going on in 1964 to make such a dramatic change in local governance laws that had minimal state oversight 😒

13268394, ^ came in here to speculate about this.
Posted by Brew, Thu Jun-21-18 08:59 AM
I wasn't sure that HOAs were the result of the Civil Rights Act, but I was pretty sure. And even if I had no inkling that the two things were connected, I probably would've made an educated guess that HOAs were somehow connected to racism. Everything bad in this country is.

And they were ALL terrible.
Crazy rules.
Crazy dues.
Crazy standards.
Crazy board members.

Get your landlord involved is a good course of action if you're interested. I'd personally be livid to find out my tenant was being harassed by a neighbor because it directly affects my ability to keep my tenant happy and paying rent and renewing their lease.

Fuck a HOA

You can live in a nice neighborhood without one. It's there for one reason and one reason only, and you know exactly what that is.

Better off without it.
13268387, A fist fight almost broke out at the last HOA meeting I went to
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jun-21-18 08:44 AM
In that case, both sides were being assholes.

My HOA is indeed made up of a bunch of power hungry jack offs who take themselves way too seriously and act like a bunch of aspiring kings. The dumb shit that we had to get through to make sure “fines” because of some really minor ivy growth we’re reversed was absolutely fucking ridiculous.
13268390, I could WORK this man. It picks at me that fisticuffs isn’t a viable option

13268396, while many people have issues with HOA's...
Posted by Utamaroho, Thu Jun-21-18 09:03 AM
nobody is going to do a thing about them besides complain. it's one of the few areas where you can see peoples' "ideology" stopped dead in their tracks. and sad too, since you'd think it'd be easy to just persuade your neighbors to change said rules and regulations, but alas.

as someone who actually wants HOAs in my neighborhood simply because it's a gentrifying area whose value has skyrocketed in recent years, it'd be nice to see some rules and have them enforced.

perhaps it's more than "white people" and more along the lines of people interested in value and the factors that go into that.
13268400, HOAs really spiked in 1964. They’re not for us.
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 09:07 AM
It’s like how buildings are set up temperature wise for men. Sure. The temp in the building today probably isn’t directly against women, but the temps currently don’t work FOR women.

Rules and cultures that were built around exclusion can’t reasonably be applied neutrally to inclusive societies.

and move to where one is if you want one

it's not worth the time and effort to move into an HOA area to fight against it.

13268403, yup. vote with your feet.

13268436, MD still has a higher concentration of Blacks than southern states
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-21-18 10:22 AM
but yeah, it's fucked up they are all over MD. It's definitely used to tax folks and keep people like us out.

I guess in those instances you have to live with them but get on their boards and get active.

thanks for the heads up.

13268413, I've been the bad neighbor but I appreciate HOAs now
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Thu Jun-21-18 09:34 AM
In my first place, I got fined so often, it might as well have been a 3rd mortgage. Rarely cut my lawn, had 2 roommates and we had 5 cars between us (TH community so parking was limited), even did an engine swap in my driveway.

Now I've calmed down and appreciate the order they can bring. It's really the personalities of the board that make or break an HOA though.

The president at my last HOA was very approachable and was willing to explain every decision the HOA made. He also set the tone on the listserv by not allowing it to devolve into a lot of petty sniping or racial profiling (it also helped that 70% of the neighborhood was black).

That community was on the edge of the hood and went through the worst of the housing crisis but now is really starting to rebound because the HOA was strict but also respectful of the people that lived there.

Quote the rules back to the HOA and tell them you're being harassed by your neighbor
13268424, FIL said to wait until they specify a violation then reply certified letter
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 09:53 AM
They didn’t specify a situation
They made and stated assumptions then perscribed a remedy
It’s been sloppily handled.

My beef is with the nature of the system
And the string pullers behind it

This is
1. a nonsense situation that never should’ve gotten to this point
2. a irritant and time suck

But when you have neighbors, white neighbors, that can look at you holding a sleeping five month old baby and berate you because the pizza delivery man parked in their spot ... you get the climate and culture.

Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 10:32 AM
I mentioned this yesterday. Texan culture, you don’t really get second chances. You put your best foot forward and if they break that you just cut people off.

I took that as a free pass to never speak to that woman again. And I haven’t. It’s been three months now. And the next moment she opens her mouth to me I’m going to remind her of that moment.

“Hey, you may not remember this, but I do, a few months back you decided to yell at me while I held a sleeping five month old in my arms. That was your choice, but I haven’t spoken to you since, let’s keep that up”

White folks ain’t about to have me out here being the angry nigger
You want to raise anger in me, you better want to fight with hands, because I don’t be listening to their words at fucking all.
13268449, You have the patience of a saint my man.
Posted by Brew, Thu Jun-21-18 10:33 AM
But to your point about "second chances" I can see why. I've visited Texas a handful of times and I got that vibe in just the short times I was there, nevermind living in it. So I suppose you have no choice but to adjust.

Doesn't make it right tho.

Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 10:37 AM
So I just don’t let myself get that angry
Anger can take me out of my personality for days, and life is way too short to let rude people put me in that mindset.
You gotta be close to me to actually make me mad
13268468, A lot of our culture really is based around pride and embarrassment
Posted by MEAT, Thu Jun-21-18 10:53 AM
And you never want to embarrass a man there particularly in front of others
And you definitely don’t want to injure a mans pride.
This sounds a bit folksy, but it’s a good set of rules to live by
Those are the cultural social norms there. And if you violate those norms intentionally and without cause people tend to look the other way if the response is severe.
I grew up in that culture, being cognizant that a poor interaction can escalate quickly and disproportionately from rudeness.
13268479, Gotcha.

I live in a small condo building. I've come to call the shenanigans "As the Condo Turns."

I've lived here the longest and at one point, owned 2 units so ended up being the de facto board president.

FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

For context, Me and one other owner are black. The rest of these mofos (including the renters -- my own included) are white. And they are the WORST kinda white. Brooklyn, gentrifying, whiney, liberal white people.

Recently, my neighbor (the black one) and I took some initiative and hired someone to plant and landscape our front garden for the season (something that, after I told them to shove this presidency up their asses) never got done. He did a great job and even painted and restored a bench we had out there. Well... turns out the bench "belonged" to one of the other owners (though she hadn't touched it in years and it had wood rot, and rain damage, etc. ) and she whined and itched about being "sad and disappointed" that we didn't notify her that we were going to restore the bench.

I just turned my phone off. I no longer have it for them.

Interesting thing is that we just moved into an older neighborhood with no HOA. Houses were built in the 1960s and many of our neighbors are original owners (and white).

Anyway, the neighbors had a block/cul de sac party shortly after we arrived and the original owners were giving some of us new owners the history of their houses. One of them explained that when the neighborhood was first built, the original owners had the option of creating a covenant that would restrict people from selling to minorities. He said the neighbors took a vote and decided to keep the neighborhood open to everybody.

So yeah, no HOA to this day and the neighborhood is probably 40-50% black and hispanic. The social pressure of KNOWING your neighbors means we don't really need an HOA to keep folks in check but the neighborhood is slowly losing it's cohesion as the old timers die off. Hopefully we can maintain it because, so far, this is the most invested I've ever been in a neighborhood.

I'm about to enter this world in July. I'm going from a townhome near downtown (no HOA) to a house in the burbs ($600 a year HOA). I'm so interested in how this will all go.

I think I'm gonna win any dispute where being the biggest asshole is a part of the contest. I got jokes on tap to trivialize the hall monitor type and I generally handle my shit. And my country twang is disarming.

I'm gonna TRY to be as solid as possible. I'll have yard folks. I'll certainly put my trash can somewhere decent. Hopefully the sprinklers are righteous and keep the grass and foliage looking spry. I'll park my shit in the garage daily.

I'll postpone the inevitable housewarming party until the fall. But my wife's big-legged friends will be around trying to make everything a party cuz that's what they do. They'll show up talking about 'woooo' at 6:30 on a Wednesday night.

My ILs might fuck around and end up living with me within a year (age, culture, health of MIL is slowly fading). My FIL has a raggedy pickup truck. They might get me on that. We'll see though. We know some folks who live in the hood so maybe that'll give us some hood luv off top. And we have a 9-year old girl who's a reasonably good kid.
13268749, good luck
