Y’all hitting up any music festivals this summer?

Me? I planned on going to AfroPunk until I visited the website this afternoon and learned tickets are sold out.

WELP.

Mind you, I JUST put in a vacation request for late August and got approved today. SMH.

I could turn this into a conversation about how much AfroPunk has changed over the years but I will resist the urge. I’ma just say shit used to be free and did not require a ticket but I digress...

I wanted to see Erykah, Daniel Caesar and Miguel. I enjoy other artists in the lineup but I wanted to experience those artists live. I’m realizing every artist I like is not worth seeing live. Oh, well. The 2014 lineup was better: D’Angelo, Shabazz Palaces, Fishbone, Alice Smith, Me’Shell Ndegeocello (Be quiet, mistermaxxx08), Ms. Lianne “All Lives Matter” Havas...

Essence Music Fest is ‘spensive. And it’s too late to buy a plane ticket to NOLA cuz it’s about two weeks away. It’s funny: all of the artists I want to see at AfroPunk (and more) are performing in NOLA.

All this to say, maybe this is the universe’s way of telling to drive my ass to Chicago (from Detroit) and go to Pitchfork. Chaka, Kelela and Raphael are performing. And I can stay with one of my cousins for free.

Then again, I prefer predominantly Black crowds/festivals so I dunno. Plus, I don’t want to pay $75 a day for just a few artists.

Honestly I still go to Afropunk every year if I am around just because I love the idea of all these young black creative kids trying to show out in ways they aren’t allowed to in America together. It’s worth the weight in cash I spend just to see and be around that energy.

That said, I haven’t been impressed with the lineup since they pulled Grace Jones a couple of years back (and it was in a decline). And the utter indifference to mid to emerging talent acts is disgusting (the actual rock bands were in a stage OUTSIDE OF THE FESTIVAL, lol. It took a good eight minute walk!).

And since Black is in even in the age of Tru,p, other festivals have stepped up their game. Pitchfork pulling Chaka, and as far as actual music acts were concerned the FYF fest in Los Angeles actually out blacked Afropunk as far as quality performers is concerned (too bad this years got cancelled). I mean look at this shit they pulled off last year.

Yeah, this lineup wasn't as blackity but it was solid. (Janet Jackson, Future). Weird thing is they pulled it after only a month or so of sales, so I wonder if there was something else happening (they had less cash on hand so timelines were tighter, etc)

Good look! Saw this on SoulBounce in April and forgot about it. I am now seriously considering this, and will probably make a decision in the next few days while airfare is sensible.

I like that I won't have to request PTO since it's a Saturday/Sunday event. I can leave work early on Friday and fly in that night.

And I've been meaning to get back to D.C. to see the Blacksonian and scope potential neighborhoods where I can rent. I've been thinking about moving back to the East Coast...

For the few here who might care, AfroPunk partnered with Lyte to sell some last-minute tickets and to help people who changed their plans sell the tickets they purchased months ago. The event was sold-out.

I copped a Weekend General Admission pass yesterday and I will be flying in this weekend.

I'm so embarrassed that I'm just now seeing her in concert in 2018, after so many years.

Interestingly, Badu asked the crowd who was having their first Badu Live experience. Then, she called out 70s, 80s and 90s babies. She may have called out 2000s babies, too. The 70s babies were the quietest. My fellow 80s babies were in the middle.

The 90s babies were the loudest, which confirms some of the criticism about the AfroPunk Fest being a 90s baby blipster cosplay gathering. LOL.

A girl in front of me said she was born in 1999.

I felt old as hell and I'm younger than most OKPs, who seem to be in their 40s. LOL.

it is cool to see younger kids into good music. gives some hope that good music will live on.

overall i felt young at her show, seemed like 70% of the crowd was mid 40s and over. maybe 5% was under 25.

i want to see her so bad again. i was thinking of doing her bday show in february but its after the southwest sale dates. plus it hasnt been announced lol

This is a nice, positive take.

...but every time I've called myself "a child of the 70s" I'd get laughs. Late 70s are 80s babies, like the late 80s are 90s, etc.

Haven't been to AfroPunk for a few years (ever since they got rid of the free, wait-in-line tickets). Never managed to stick around for the headliners as I'd be DONE well before then. I was probably showing up too early.

I understand. I arrived late (after 6 or 7 p.m.) for AfroPunk this year because the festival doesn’t allow reentry. I was fortunate that most of the people I wanted to see were headliners/evening acts.

I only prefer the festival format because I’m a loner and assigned seating can give me anxiety. Nearly 10 years ago, my babyfaced 20-something self sat sandwiched between two groups of 40somethings at a Maxwell concert. No one engaged me and I felt so awkward. LOL.

Oh, and festivals can be a good value if the lineup is good. You can see several acts in a short duration for a fraction of the price you’d might pay to see them individually.
