13267499, Dawg, what the fuck is a puma basketball shoe?
Posted by sersey, Mon Jun-18-18 04:52 PM
I’ve never heard puma and basketball in the same sentence. Ever...
13267503, right?! LOL

13267509, RE: right?! LOL

Jokes aside. That’s a major move. They laughed when he bought a minority stake in the Nets. They laughed when he invested in a fledgling streaming service. They laughed when he bought a little known champagne brand, and seemingly rapped its way into mainstream consciousness.

So yes... the man has a knack for elevating lesser-known but formidable enterprises into the stratosphere.

But today.... and for the foreseeable future, I still say what the fuck is a Puma basketball shoe??
13267504, I'm thankful for the one headline I read that said "relaunches".
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Jun-18-18 05:02 PM
I was in the same boat. "Never seen a Puma b-ball shoe in my whole liiiife-uh." (c) Blue Ivy

13267540, Puma Clyde’s has to be one of the first b-ball signature shoes
Posted by DJR, Mon Jun-18-18 07:10 PM
Maybe the first.

They had Vince Carter briefly, too.

But yeah, it’s been 30-40 years since they were really a factor, it seems.

I wore these in high school cuz my parents weren’t about to spend more than $60 on some shoes that I was gonna destroy playing basketball.
13267557, Vince Carter rocked em too...

this is one of the most interesting stories i've ever witnessed

https://www.thecut.com/2008/03/what_puma_and_adidas_have_to_d_1.html

Puma and Addidas founders were German brothers who HATED each other
13267592, you should checkout the business wars podcast....
Posted by dapitts08, Tue Jun-19-18 01:10 AM
nike vs adidas....it was all about the founding of both companies and how they were battling it out to dominate.... so fascinating to say the least....and yes, they talk about the brothers and their falling out.
13267528, Ya'll never seen these?

I mean I guess we all did grow up with these being streetwear and break dancer shoes. But Clyde Frazier is who these are named after. He hooped in these for years.

13267550, I had a green pair in high school. Didn't know they were called Clydes.
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Jun-18-18 07:38 PM
In fact I'm not sure they were, but maybe. They were just b-boy shoes to everyone.
13267555, The Puma Suedes and Puma Clyde’s are slightly different
Posted by DJR, Mon Jun-18-18 08:07 PM
If I recall, the Clyde was the basketball version but the two shoes are very similar.
13267567, Oh ok. I certainly had never heard of Clydes before this post.
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Jun-18-18 09:18 PM
But it definitely looks like the same shoe Haha.
13267558, $95!!!! BUH BYE
Posted by Kira, Mon Jun-18-18 08:17 PM
Not spending $95 on shoes not made for running or cycling. I can get a five year supply of body wash for $95
13267561, I'm sorry but I'm dying laughing over here, wondering if you compare
Posted by J_Stew, Mon Jun-18-18 08:29 PM
everything you buy to how much body wash you could get for the same price.

"Go OUT to dinner??? Are you serious? That might be $100, I can get 7 YEARS of body wash for that money, girl!"

"35k for that new car? WHAT??? That's like 3 thousand years of body wash, man!"
13267562, RE: I'm sorry but I'm dying laughing over here, wondering if you compare

13267569, They’re normally like $50-$60
Posted by DJR, Mon Jun-18-18 09:22 PM
I have no idea why that pair that was linked cost so much?
13267630, Because it's Neiman Marcus.

13268000, yup, people love overspending at these type of stores

13267919, getting booted from nets ownership while having to explain it away
Posted by select_from_where, Tue Jun-19-18 04:53 PM
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jay-z-explains-reason-for-selling-brooklyn-nets-stake-20130419

These sports dudes are TITANS of business and entertainment, music is but a paltry comparison in terms of wealth and influence.

I am sure Jay wanted to have more say and the russian owner told him to stick it up his borscht

and don't buy the conflict of interest, dude probably started liquidating his ownership stake before any of the roc sports stuff happened. its typical for entrepreneurs to downsize their investment and focus a niche if something isn't working out.
13267930, That was clearly a Brooklyn Ambassador move
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-19-18 05:29 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave him that 1.5% under the table.
13268005, Yall sure Jay-Z done with the nets?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jun-20-18 07:45 AM
This popped up accross the street from Barclays (the net's arena) this week.

13268025, It makes sense to buy ad space by a basketball arena
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-20-18 08:27 AM
not sure this is anything more than a smart marketing move.

13267609, Puma tried and failed before at this..I think they even had the NBA apparel
Posted by silenttype, Tue Jun-19-18 06:41 AM
contract 1 year back in the late 90's/early 2000's.

I actually used to hoop in the pair Vince wore in the late 90's
They weren't bad, but I'm a Nike guy so that was off Vince's
star power/influence alone

That said, Hov would be the greatest influencer EVER
if he could get cats to rock Pumas to hoop.

Ayton and Bagley aint the guys to do it- they'll need a
Trae Young or someone more marketable as a flagship brand ambassador
13267611, Ionno man. Bagley is good.
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-19-18 06:57 AM
13267687, So is Steph....
Posted by Heinz, Tue Jun-19-18 10:09 AM
There was an uptick in sales at some point but culturally.....nobody gives a fuck about UA shoes overall or even his shoes.

It really doesn't matter about how good the player is....that just one part of the equation. Ultimately its up to the brand and their business, marketing, design, technology, etc. This is Jay-Z 2018 not 2000's. He's not exactly the same cultural inspiration for fashion that he once was. Nobody out here trying to dress like Hov. The only thing people want to inspire to be like him is be married to Beyonce and have his bank account LOL

Could this a good thing? Sure weirder things have happened. But the chips are stacked against both parties. This is no different than Blackberry getting Alicia Keys or Swizz involved in their business. Cash grab for one.....big home run swing for the other.

IG @h_n_z
13267928, Hov will attract players because athletes want to be rappers
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-19-18 05:26 PM
and those players will help push the brand.

I don’t think Puma will ever grab a significant share of basketball shoes.. but they still have a cool factor in the hip hop community and I can see their athletic wear having an impact.

It really comes down to how they look. A nice looking shoe will sell.
13268039, 10-15 years ago....maybe...now...idk...Jay isn't their arbiter of cool
Posted by ambient1, Wed Jun-20-18 08:51 AM
their = kids under 25-30
13268047, He's Beyonce's wife. He's good
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-20-18 09:04 AM
Isn't Cole still signed to Jay?

I'm sure he will find a way to get in these dudes ears.

13268306, Jay may not be their arbiter of cool but Roc Nation Sports' roster...
Posted by Creole, Wed Jun-20-18 05:30 PM
is growing year over year. There are a ton of young guys, like Leonard Fournette, who wanted them Paper Planes in their sphere. His name and influence have to be accounted for.

http://rocnation.com/sports/

13268314, Again nobody said he doesn't have influence
Posted by Heinz, Wed Jun-20-18 06:34 PM
Not sure why you keep making that argument but it's no where near what it once was. Good enough business man to get younger athletes signed to Puma sure that is possible. That doesn't equate to Puma ever getting popular or better at making ball shoes lol UA with Steph, Harper and The Rock is evidence of that. Ugly shoes are ugly shoes no matter who is wearing it. Look at Ye and his line, not all his shoes hit like the first release with Adidas.

13268317, Hmm

We haven’t seen the shoes yet.

but y’all keep saying Jay ain’t what he once was... but he has shown he can connect with the youth so I don’t see this as a bad move.
13268368, These aren't ugly tho

Then they put out that low all white one that hypebeasts went overboard about how much of a “dad shoe” it looked like, and everyone else wanted to feel in on the joke.

Now two years later those same hypebeasts are all about “dad shoes”.
