13263377, Every song sounds the same Posted by Innocent Criminal, Mon Jun-04-18 06:21 PM
You can almost take the lyrics from any one go-go song and put it to a different one and nobody would be the wiser.
|
13263378, you could say the same about 90's dancehall right? Posted by The3rdOne, Mon Jun-04-18 06:30 PM

Trash music Trash aucoustics It doesn’t knock It’s not clean in my head phones Chuck Brown is held in sacrosanct I heard the Roots do a gogo cut and it was better than any band that does it for a living They still record it on cassettes It was ingenious and organic when it started but now it’s the same It’s the soundtrack to metro pcs on a weekend DC folks can’t dance so they keep everyone else from dancing by playing gogo.

I remember this chick at Howard complaining that all the non-DC dudes stopped dancing when the gogo came on in the party. I told her it was a bamma check.

13263392, Those corny, repetitive drums Posted by flipnile, Mon Jun-04-18 08:45 PM
They only got one conga pattern for the whole genre?
Some of the older shit I can rock with (like Trouble Funk), but a lot sounds too repetitive.

13263481, We don't know what we hear? How does that work, bruh? Posted by flipnile, Tue Jun-05-18 08:55 AM
We've heard the music, and many of us don't like it. How we don't know what we are talking about?
If we gotta be at a block party w/ live bands battling back in 1987 to appreciate the music then it's just not be as popular to as many people outside of nostalgic DC folk.
|
13263627, to say that there is only one conga pattern is ignorant. Posted by kinetic94761180, Tue Jun-05-18 12:14 PM

13264729, Yo, I was serious bruh. Put me on. Anyone else too. Posted by flipnile, Thu Jun-07-18 05:36 PM
I grew up in Philly, so while go-go was at almost every party back in the day, it seems like the same songs w/ similar beats. Also the pace is a bit slower than the house/disco/b-more club that got a lot of burn up here.
The vocals & call & response are FAR better than club music, tho I like do really like the beats (even though BMore club seems like the same two samples recycled over and over again).
I think most dancehall sucks, save for some of the smoother cuts (I hate that harsh yelling shit).
House is my shit.
I need guidance. I want to like go go.

13263448, I LUH the Go-Go Music Posted by tully_blanchard, Tue Jun-05-18 06:59 AM
It's one of those things either it speaks to you or it all sounds the same.
Same with House...which I also LUH
I gave up tryna explain it a long time ago, lol.

13263455, this is a real bizarre thread for me. Posted by shygurl, Tue Jun-05-18 07:38 AM
Like, you don't have to love go-go, but it's really black people who don't like it?
Ya'll don't like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2ElmMFc8w0 or this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsOHywuPmVI or this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s-oSJ60Q14 (I have no idea what this video is but I'm cracking up)
Go-go isn't my favorite genre of music, but damn, you gotta at least appreciate it. I'm not even from the DMV but I fuck with it. It's fun music, it's cookout music, type of music you can throw on around the older folks in your family and they won't start complaining. This sentiment is a bit odd to me.

She absolutely HATES 99.9% of Go-Go.
Chuck sounds like a bad Las Vegas lounge act to her.
The rest is a bunch of folks holl'n over the same beat to her.
But House??? Shiiiiiit...I mean, she's from Chicago, so it's kind of a cheat...but she can listen to (good) House 24 hours a day.

|
13263527, This breaks my heart. What happened? Posted by Overqualified, Tue Jun-05-18 10:02 AM
>club is dead
Amidst the bullshit, that was one of the best things about growing up in Baltimore in the 90s. Club music belonged to US. Going to Inner City Records, Metro 2, or any flea market for club tapes as soon as they dropped. Legendary DJs - Shawn Marshall, Boobie, Shawn Caesar, Mike Crosby...shit, Pumpin Paul. Nothing but club music at parties.
Everyone was trying to be a club DJ. But you had to be nice on the 1s and 2s or get embarassed. I'd put a tried and true Baltimore DJ against any DJ still.
Those were some good days.

13264806, born and raised in DC Posted by MiracleRic, Fri Jun-08-18 06:44 AM
and never really liked it
it's much better live but was moreso an excuse to dance up on chicks when i was young
it's actually got an interesting history and evolution as a genre but the music itself has never really been great to me...it's not great music for studios, it's often derivative to the point of a lot of it feeling like remixed cover bands...it's repetitive...
a lot of these things aren't unique to go-go bc there's a lot of local dance genres that share some of those traits
|
13265122, *stands in this line* Posted by spenzalii, Fri Jun-08-18 02:56 PM
Born and raised in SE before moving to Suitland (SE with grass, basically). While I respect a lot of the older groups (Chuck, Trouble, Lil Benny, Junk, Back, Essence, etc) I could never clap to it like most of my family. You pretty much summed it up
|
13264928, Grew up in PG County and I was always lukewarm on it. Posted by WarriorPoet415, Fri Jun-08-18 10:27 AM
Like at parties and stuff it was cool, but I'd rarely listen to it on my own.
But if some people had it on. Cool. I might have asked for some dubs of really good tapes, but that's it.
I doubt go-go would make up even 5% of my music collection, lifetime.
BUT....I could always groove to some Chuck. ______________________________________________________________________________

13263649, i'm from bmore and i love go-go Posted by GROOVEPHI, Tue Jun-05-18 12:49 PM
Wasn't really until I went away to school and saw how the PG/DC girls danced to go-go that made me love it.
but I fucks with the drums and the horns. Seeing go-go performed live gave me a better appreciation also. Saw Chuck Brown a couple of years before he passed. He brought out EU, RE, BYB, NE Groovers, and they jammed like shit.
|
13263656, my wife is from DC and hates it. it's grown on me enough that i can Posted by Government Name, Tue Jun-05-18 01:02 PM

13265056, Cowbells and horns and cowbells and horns and cowbells. Posted by Shogun, Fri Jun-08-18 12:50 PM
all at the same time. It just sounds like a bunch of people beating on percussion instruments, and doing horn stabs all at the same time.
Chuck Brown was cool. But I can only take about 10 minutes of it.
|
13265115, Go-Go is like Soca in that it only works in the element. Posted by adg87, Fri Jun-08-18 02:38 PM
It is absolutelly amongst some of the worst driving music, ever. Outside of that, when I'm chilling wit my DC folks and it's mad honeys around, I love it!
|
13265120, I can see and respect that...never went to a legit shonuff go-go Posted by ambient1, Fri Jun-08-18 02:55 PM
was always told that and makes all the sense in the world
bmore club kinda was like that after a while...
like when I was in HS...it was ok to listen to and cop all of the club mix tapes from the DJ's Overqualified referenced above(DJ Boobie Track #8 is classic...used to listen EVERYDAY on the bus lol)...it was ok to ride around cranking it... then sometime in the late 90's and beyond...it was kinda like...keep it in the club or listen when you pregame
but yeah...I always wanted to see a gogo when that tiddyball dance was poppin
|
13265422, just a good damn time Posted by adg87, Mon Jun-11-18 12:06 PM
Same with that Soca. I've never been to a Carnival, but I can imagine I would love Soca to death that day! LOL!

|
13267053, Jill was a for sure Go-Go song, DC folks claim it. And the Janelle Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Jun-17-18 05:09 AM
Was a Go-Go remix by a DC DJ and band

the same exact bounce and feel as the Janelle remix or Jill track...most folks wouldn't put "1 thing" on an actual Go-Go mix. I've never heard it on one, at least.
|
13265574, music is about feeling Posted by atruhead, Tue Jun-12-18 08:16 AM
I've been to DC maybe 20 times or less in my life, but gogo is amazing
I know a dope melody and rhythm when I hear it.
its the same as seeing an attractive woman walking down the street
|
13267005, go go is meant to be heard live Posted by undeniable, Sat Jun-16-18 04:38 PM
gogo was popularized back in the 80s and 90s. It's like asking somebody why they don't like New Jack Swing. shit is antiquated style of music.
and what's that shit they play in new orleans? zydeco? you could ask the same question.
|
13267017, RE: go go is meant to be heard live Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Jun-16-18 05:42 PM

disagree, but whatever.
|
13267290, To the uneducated ear it all sounds the same Posted by bigkarma, Mon Jun-18-18 11:57 AM
The same could be said of several niche genres.
I enjoy dancehall reggae, but my wife isn't into it, so when she's riding in the car with me and I'm listening to all dancehall, she complains that it all sounds like one long song.
I feel like that when my kid is playing EDM.
