13250509, Opinions on Swift covering "September"
Posted by beatnik, Fri Apr-13-18 04:35 PM
I just saw this on twitter, I'd drop a link but the articles I'm seeing are pretty much left&right on the issue

I argue the reason she made it a country version is because she don't have the style to do a good cover of a song originally performed by Black men

I'm just laughing at the people saying this version is better or opened their eyes to the song in a new way. . . like, for real? lol

also, I love the original too much to hear some soft ass country version

What say you General Discussion?

13250520, The problem with it is that its a shitty cover

I'm not opposed to different arrangements. Shoot, I once heard a country arrangement of Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain" that was released in the '70s that was pretty good. But if you're going to set foot on the hallowed ground of one of the best songs of all time, you better come correct. She didn't.

given her voice and stylistic range I don't think it had a chance to be good

this just reminded me of that Atlanta episode from last month when Paper Boi chunked his phone at the end

13250528, It's the reason that the "Trap Music Challenge" was a thing two years ago

13250548, word?
Posted by beatnik, Fri Apr-13-18 08:24 PM
I had no idea that was an actual "thing" thing, I just remember seeing niykee heaton do it and suffering an eye-roll hemorrhage

so they really had a challenge for that shit? lol I just thought it was the evolution of gentrification/appropriation mixed with internet. . .

nah, that's exactly what it was.
13250581, That white girl on Atlanta was the first thing I thought of too
Posted by legsdiamond, Sat Apr-14-18 09:29 AM
Thing is... white folks who don’t know EWF are eating this up.
13250589, I'd wager it isn't a shitty cover to her fanbase

13250531, she couldn't pick ANY other song to cover?
Posted by kingjerm78, Fri Apr-13-18 07:20 PM
That's one of the Holy Grail of Black folx songs. Every family reunion or cookout this song gets played.

The nerve of this woman.

Hope this is all Ye needs to snap out the Sunken Place.
13250588, She's gonna cover Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" next...

TaySwift is just a big joke, shit even her label relabeled her as a pop rock artist instead of a country act.

She needs to get real people around her, cause all her managers, friends, studio people should've told her from jump this wasn't a good idea.

13251120, She kinda seems like a lightweight troll in certain ways
Posted by flipnile, Tue Apr-17-18 01:39 PM
She seems like she trolls black folks (the background dancers, jacking Beyonce, this EW&F "cover"), trolls ex-boyfriends (aren't most of her songs about how some dude she loved did her wrong?), and trolls other female artists. She's also the perpetual victim (she acts like Kanye Deebo slapped her on stage while screaming "shutup!").

She definitely seems like the type to call the cops on a well-dressed black man at Starbucks because "how does that thug get to have a better job than me and my man?"

Yeah this is how a lot of people see her, even white people are disgusted of her and her personality & music, it's like she came out the box and then they want her to be put back in her box to be never heard from again, but then you got her fans who seems oblivious to all of this and can't get enough of her music...smh.

13250533, White people won't be satisfied until they ruin everything
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Apr-13-18 07:25 PM
Is NOTHING sacred anymore????!
I refuse to even listen.....
There's a lot of blame to go around here.... Who actually owns the rights to that song? And why do they insist on letting every Peter Paul and Mary put their foot in it??
13250550, I hear you
Posted by beatnik, Fri Apr-13-18 08:33 PM

I just know her voice and that she has seemingly come no where near r&b and when the subtext said "country version" -_-

funny thing is though, I bet a Jessie Ware or Adele, shit, even Pink might do it justice

Vanilla Mantis don't have the chops to fuck with EW&F

yall can come at me for this. . .

BUT

I can totally see Vanilla Mantis doing a Janet cover and it being decent, maybe a "Time Flies" or "Pleasure Principle", but that's Janet so I'd probably still get mad lol

one more time for effect

There's probably a better country cover floating around on youtube
13250580, That's what I thought. There are a gazillion covers of great black songs

By white girls with guitars on YouTube. This doesn't stand out from that at all.

13250586, A: Oh so that's what that song is called
Posted by Adwhizz, Sat Apr-14-18 09:51 AM
B: Is this song actually for sell in some form

C: If it IS are the original artists getting paid? If so I can't be too mad at them getting a check
13250587, I just hope that EW&F and their families cake off this
Posted by flipnile, Sat Apr-14-18 10:02 AM
13250592, It's recorded and technically for sale, right?
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Sat Apr-14-18 10:23 AM
Taylor gets a cut from Spotify plays, so I'm sure she had to pay for a (mechanical?) license for the song. So they are most likely getting paid. The cover truly is awful, though.

A Korean R&B song sampled EWF's "Brazilian Rhyme" recently, and I was glad to see the the credit was included in the YouTube page's information, which means they are getting some royalties: https://youtu.be/jNqqBiIQsRQ?t=1m10s
13250596, its not for us. so why even bother thinking about it.

I absolutely can't stand when rhythmless soulless people attempt
to redo rhythmic soulful music(I'm tryna be as gentle as possible).

Respect da art. If you ain't got no rhythm or soul, you have no bidness touching our alchemy.

Respect da art.

as a Huge EWF Fan that mess sounds like some constipated person who is sluggish.

she sounds like Paula Cole impersonating a bad Phone sex Operator on the Little House of the praire field. Yikessssssss
13251058, i listened to it and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

13251077, Shit ain’t funny
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Apr-17-18 11:55 AM
It really hurt my heart when I heard the first 30 seconds. I couldn’t do anymore than that.

She doesn’t like music.

If she did she wouldn know that was a violation and stopped the recording session.
13251087, Old girl I work with said someone else called it bland & gluten-free...
Posted by Marbles, Tue Apr-17-18 12:05 PM

I was trying to avoid it but she talked me into checking it out.

Afterwards, I told her I was mad at her & wasn't speaking to her for a while.

White folks were type mad

I bet this us how they felt
13251117, some were maybe mad at that...
Posted by The3rdOne, Tue Apr-17-18 01:33 PM
but black people didn't make Run DMC a household name with white people after Walk This way.

Black people aint making Swift no household name with this excrement..at all
13251122, Lots of white folks around my way loved it...
Posted by Marbles, Tue Apr-17-18 01:50 PM

I can see hardcore Areosmith fans being salty.

But I was roughly 12-12 when it dropped, so kids my age weren't that invested in Aerosmith at the time. They loved that they could have a rap/rock song.
13251226, White folks were mad... but a month later they were dancing to it
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Apr-18-18 08:38 AM
13251115, That half-ass effort she gave makes this shit even worse
Posted by flipnile, Tue Apr-17-18 01:23 PM
Shit was bland-as-fuck. If she's anything like her music she must be awful to be around.
13251121, Shit is waaaaay better than the original
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Apr-17-18 01:42 PM
She brought the soul to that piece. Feel like sitting in my rocking chair on my porch with some moonshine looking over the farm with my dog to this piece!

Those jive turkey ain’t got shit on the highest selling artist of this generation.

They should be sending her all type of fruit baskets as a thank you for making they washed up asses relevant again.

Long live Queen Taylor!
