13233780, What is your music routine?
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-12-18 11:22 AM
Multi-part question.

1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a streaming app, multiple streaming apps? Still rocking a personal library? Still doing CDs? Cassettes?

2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an artist/ several artists or more of a mood? Are they playlists you made, where you individually picked out all the songs on the playlist? Do you prefer to listen to music in blocks of similar songs, gangsta rap hour, new jack swing, late 90's boy bands, etc or shuffle and mix it up as much as possible?

3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

4) How do you discover new music?

5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth speakers? Internal phone speaker?

any other relevant comments/questions welcome

I usually grab an album or grab a song and make a radio station and then dump songs I like into a playlist.

I'll also find an artist and dump all the tracks I like from them into an artist playlist

I need to edit tho because it's getting ridiculous.

13233792, how is it getting ridiculous?

13233814, too many playlist and too many songs in some playlist
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-12-18 12:22 PM
13233821, yeah im not big on having a lot of playlists
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-12-18 12:26 PM
why is too many songs a problem? are you finding that you stop liking some of the songs or why wouldnt you want more songs?

Generally streaming, Spotify is the app. sometimes i'll put CDs in if i'm in the car.

Depends on where i'm listening and how long i'll be listening. at home sometimes we just call out songs to play and jam. sometimes there'll be a particular artist or album selected. sometimes it's artist radio.

>
>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

i like listening to whole albums, but it doesn't happen as often for me with streaming service unless there's something specific i wanna listen to. usually now it's shuffle an artist or artist radio.

here, my brother, friends, wherever.

at home we have bluetooth soundbars and a jbl flip3. just depends on which gets turned on. in the car i plug the phone into whatever aux option is there. in the van it's an aux cord, in my new ride it's a damn tape deck/aux adapter (i know right?). in the rolla i just sold i had a fm transmitter thing or just played cds.

haha tape deck adapters and FM transmitters were so dope before built in aux/bluetooth. so happy to have bluetooth in the ride, even if it sometimes doesn't connect.

yeah, the cds are albums. and i haven't burned one in a little while, but i would burn em so i could listen easier in the car without having to have my phone plugged into the fm adapter shit.

depends on how good the station is rockin', but i definitely skip.

i can't believe the highlander i got from my pops doesn't have an aux jack and DOES have a tape deck. it's an 06, wtf. the van is also an 06 and has an aux jack, no tape deck. the rolla was an 06 and had a cd player, no aux jack or tape deck. so weird.

13233786, Spotify. Daily mixes for everyday and Release Radar for new stuff
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Feb-12-18 11:38 AM
13233791, are those public playlists?
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-12-18 11:41 AM
or do you make playlists daily??
13233795, Spotify puts them together just for you. So not public
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Feb-12-18 11:51 AM
There are 6 daily mixes (at least for me). Each with a different flavor (southern rap, 90s r&b, current r&b, pop, etc..) based on things I've played in the past. It shuffles in new stuff every day.

Release radar puts together a playlist once a week of new releases you might like. Again based on things you've played before
13233798, ive never used spotify so excuse the dumb questions
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-12-18 11:56 AM
so you tell it that on mondays you want whatever type of music and each monday you will have a playlist for you with new songs mixed in??
13233805, Nah. Everyday there are 6 playlists to choose from
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Feb-12-18 12:05 PM
Each with a different vibe.

Everyday, the songs that make up the playlists change

I'm strictly rocking off my library, considering switching to streaming but im not sure my listening style and data plan would be too friendly for it.

Primarily listen to a big playlist with all types of music that i keep expanding as i listen to new music.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

I prefer to wait for an album to come out instead of listening to singles. Will sometimes revisit older albums but its a lot rarer than it used to be.

>4) How do you discover new music?

Primarily here, or I will randomly google "best albums of ____" sometimes I will google to see if such and such artists has released anything new. definitely feel behind the curve.

I definitely prefer to listen with headphones and get to do it quite a bit at work. At home I use headphones too when I listen to music. Same playlist when in the car.

13234084, I just rock with Napster/Google Play

>>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

Napster and Google Play. I like having any and everything I'd like to listen to.on a whim. I keep a nice, varied cache of downloaded material, but otherwise stream whatever I want at a moment's notice.

And it's lovely.

>>2) Do you usually listen to playlists?

Not unless I made it. Generally I just create an all-purpose queue for when my wife and I are in the car, but if I'm alone I tend to just stream whatever I feel. It's mood-based at that point.

>
>>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

I make it a point to listen to a few all the way through each week, but that varies. A fair amount of acts get the "greatest hits & album cuts I like" treatment. I find most of my full album listens are hip hop.

I try to give new material a listen but its rare that I find a keeper. Blankface LP was one. I found myself a sucker for Youngblood Hawke's "Wake Up" a few years ago, and that fills an occasional need forsomething relentlessly upbeat and positive.

Trust me, it's the perfect walk-off round after immersing yourself in Mobb Deep and Prodigy solo material for a week.

>>4) How do you discover new music

I check for new releases weekly on Napster and Play. For new artists, if something strikes me, I dig into the "artists like this".
13233789, spotify, all playlists, or an artist library on shuffle.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Feb-12-18 11:40 AM
some of the playlists i make. some of them are from spotify

i'll listen to an album once or twice to pick out the good songs.

usually listen in the car, or working out or just laying in bed messing around on instagram before i go to sleep.
13233790, I just let go of my CDs
Posted by bigkarma, Mon Feb-12-18 11:41 AM
I realized, while cleaning out my garage it's been forever since I actually listened to a CD. I had crates of CDs that got moved from home to home, before settling in my garage for years. I made a clean break. I called up local OKP, Tapedeck, and told him they were all his. He may be getting another call soon, as I just uncovered a box of cassettes.

1) What is your primary source of music?

I have a library of MP3s on two external drives and a laptop, but I'm finding I don't even listen to those that much anymore. Basically, I stream.

2) Do you usually listen to playlists?

I use playlists for the gym or I download a mix show.

3) Do you listen to whole albums often?

I will give an entire album a full listen when it comes out. Sometimes I will be in the mood for a classic album and I'll stream it while I work.

4) How do you discover new music?

I have satellite radio, on my car and phone, so if I hear something new I note it and once I can search it out, I do. I also get hip to new stuff here on OKP, AfroPunk and a few other sites and podcasts.

5) What's your primary hardware set up for music?

Phone, tablet and laptop. I have bluetooth earbuds, and external speakers.
13233802, i have a small collection of CDs in a box, dont plan to ever use them

I think i have like 30 gigs of music, tons of duplicates, on my laptop but i never turn it on. laptop has some issues so i dont bother. it was my primary way of listening to pick out songs for playlists and get on my phone before it started giving me problems.

It is rare that i listen to a new album more than once. typically pick out the songs i like to add to my main playlist and dont revisit the album

I was just taking a dig at the frats/sorors. You said that if more of us supported Tidal it could get the features of AM/Spotify, I'm not sure it could ever reach their levels or integration. There is 0% chance I will ever be driving in my car (with CarPlay) and say "hey Siri, play NY State of Mind" and it will work with Tidal. It doesn't matter if they have 10 subscribers or 100m subscribers, that level of integration that I'm looking for will not happen.

I used to stream a lot in like 2014, but then I stopped. I did discover a few artists from it, but it's usefulness kinda faded, because I tend to seek out new music anyway. I guess happening upon music on my own is one of those small joys in life... remembering how it happened and stuff. It's hard to explain. I'll still buy a physical CD if I think an artist is special.

Yes. I individually pick all the songs. My most listened to playlist is the one with current music I'm feeling with no genre or tempo restriction. Other than that, I have genre lists.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

Yeah. Anytime I find a song by a new artist that I like, I'll give their whole album a listen. I usually listen to new albums tho. After that, I take the songs I like most and add them to a playlist.

>4) How do you discover new music?

By living I guess lol. Youtube, Amazon, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, TV shows, movies, Shazam, etc etc. There's music everywhere if you're listening.

I refine it maybe like every month or two. Occasionally I'll discover a lot of music at once, and it'll get really large or get refined a few weeks in a row. The most current stuff on it now are songs from Planet Asia's album he dropped in January and NERD's latest.

Yeah sometimes it's youtube suggestions or an email from Bandcamp (those bandcamp follows are the business). I discovered a folksy artist named Julie Byrne recently on youtube just by typing in "relaxing" or something like that. Discovered a few actually, but I only stuck with a couple of songs by her. As you stated, sometimes I discover stuff on Soundcloud from articles, but then it continues playing songs from other artists. I discover a LOT of music like that. No Suh Foster (Hip Hop) being the most recent. Other times I'll find out about artists or albums from clicking on hella albums on Amazon. That's how I found out LeToya Luckett had a new album out of all places. I also discovered both Margaret Glaspy (light rock) and The Black Opera (Hip Hop) that way. Sometimes I'll just be in the mood to find new music, and I'll go for it somewhere. Probably tedious to most, but it's like stress relief to me lol.

13233803, I have completely given up on owning music.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Feb-12-18 12:02 PM
Which is ironic because I would have sworn that I needed to own my music if you asked me just a few years ago.

I went from ripping, buying and stealing MP3s and creating playlist in itunes and winamp to streaming all my music on Spotify.

I've got a ton of older playlist but I usually have a go to list of the hottest music at the moment which usually last me about a quarter or half a year (I keep adding songs to the list until it makes sense to start a new list).

I use the daily mixes a lot to for older hip-hop.

I've gotten the type of old where I find myself discovering a lot more new music from department stores. I've done a lot of shazaming lately.

It blows my mind that music services like Spotify can't figure out how to make real money when they have me as a captive audience for the forseeable future as I don't see how I will quit them and lose all my playlists. They are basically a utility at this point.

The business model is so hard because they have to pay so much out to rights holders.

My point though is with so many users, and the inability for users to just walk away from the service, they got to eventually figure out a way to make money. I think they should buy a ticket company and create a competitor to ticketmaster but what do I know.

i was really hyped with the google music concept when it launched. being able to get it to match my library and make it available to stream along with new music was such a dope concept to me. if their app didnt suck i would still be on it. i dont understand why they limit how many songs a playlist can have, i liked being able to buy an album from the play store and being able to instantly have it in my rotation.

i ended up switching to a different app where i could control my playlists better but then i have to download the albums i bought onto a pc then load them on my phone. i usually just end up downloading an illegal copy directly on my phone even though i bought the album just cuz its easier.

^^ I create playlists when I'm lookin for new stuff. I'll open a channel and see what comes thru the filter. Sometimes I let it rock thru a bunch of trap when I'm working out, but I may be lifted while lifting and go for that lo-fi underground shxt.

"Personal" library. I've pirated music since my late-teens, mostly due to how much of it I want to hear (or wanted to hear) and how much control I want over it. I can't justify a subscription to one of the broader streaming services so long as they look less appealing and have less information and variety on the music than my own iTunes playlist does. Plus, my iTunes library is over 232,000 tracks large, and it's been building since my senior year of high school. That's ten years of music history in there; it'd feel strange to say goodbye to it, even if it's all digital data and I own very little of it.

I've never owned a record player, but I do still buy CDs of albums I really, really like or have neat packaging. They go in a box and are rarely if ever opened since I also don't own a car.

>2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an

For the longest time I was pretty much strictly albums, but over the past three years I've really struggled to - at first - want to listen to music at all, and these days just to carve out time for music in the rest of my media diet. Every day my podcast feed gets something like four hours of new content, I really enjoy playing video games and feel guilty listening to music or podcasts while I play anything story based, I'd like to watch some movies and television every once in a while...these days, I usually carve out Sunday or Monday, days I know I have off, to writing about four/five albums or listening intently to three or four albums throughout the day.

But for most of the past year until I put that restriction on myself for the new year, it was mostly listening to playlists I made for my now ex-GF. I'm pretty damn good at making tapes with a sense of flow and story to them, and I found them really pleasurable to listen to while I was with her, and then a good reminder of my ability to be in a good, loving relationship or at least live within the appearance of one once we weren't together any more.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

Like I said above, it's still my preferred method of listening. Much less diverse than when I was younger, due to the time constraints. I'm working on covering full artist discographies I've overlooked or skipped around on or want to reappraise, also, as a way of keeping my critical mind active while also filling holes and not necessarily focusing entirely on current music. These are the last full albums I listened to intently and where they hit in my Handbook, plus the Black Panther soundtrack I'm listening to for the first time as I fill this post out:

#1242 Pitbull - Rebelution (Feb 5)
#255 Maxo Kream - Maxo 187 (Feb 5)
#1098 Travis Scott - Days Before Rodeo (Feb 5)
#1042 Travis Scott - Owl Pharaoh (Feb 5)
#304 Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (Feb 5)
#1013 Ski Mask the Slump God - You Will Regret (Jan 17)
#229 Skyzoo - Music for My Friends (Jan 17)
#142 Vince Staples - Prima Donna (Jan 17)
#451 Vince Staples - Summertime '06 (Jan 13)
#167 Vince Staples - Hell Can Wait (Jan 8)
#503 Vince Staples - Shyne Coldchain II (Jan 7)

>4) How do you discover new music?

I check the Top 250 New Torrents list on my tracker two or three times a day, I follow what my friends are writing about on RateYourMusic, I read the music writing on The Ringer, check in with Pitchfork every once in a while, and shuffle my own library. That 232,000 number means there's a lot of stuff there I haven't heard or have forgotten about entirely. It also means I might accidentally listen to a 98 Degrees deep cut.

I also log in to LiveMixtapes once or twice a day to see what's new on both the mainstream and "indy" channels; I'll download stuff from artists I've never heard of with terrible box art if there's a single production credit or feature from someone I like, and then never listen to it. But this is also how I knew about Freddie Gibbs and Big K.R.I.T. before anyone else, so I still do it.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth
>speakers? Internal phone speaker?

I have Klipsch Image x11 earbuds for out in public, though the wiring has gotten a bit frayed down by the jack. I need to get some electrical tape because they still sound glorious. I've never had to pay full price for these things, either; I've had three pair and paid as little as $80 for one pair and at most $150 for these recent ones; the MSRP is usually $350.

But I honestly don't listen to music on headphones much, I find it kind of claustrophobic and constricting. That wasn't really the case when I was a kid but more and more feels that way to me now. I almost always listen to music on my fairly basic but I think pretty good sounding Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 computer speakers. I'm sure there are all sorts of subtlties that don't come out of these things, but hey, if most music is being mastered for laptop speakers at this point is that really true? Also, I live in an apartment with terrifyingly thin walls and the fact that I'm able to get away with any kind of subwoofer-supported system is a minor miracle (and indicative of incredibly lenient neighbors who also, in turn, blast their shit at weird hours and I say nothing).

if it weren't for this job i don't think i would get to listen to a lot of music. pretty laid back workload and isolated so i can listen to music practically 8 hours a day. can't really get new music while here, i might find out about some music i want to check out but then i forget when im home.

I used to make a ton of mix cds back when i was listening to music in my car via cd. a lot of "best of" and sometimes just themes inspired by a song or mood. i kind of want to get back to this.

thats basically what i do when i want to grow my library. i will check out catalogs ive never listened to. last week i decided to listen to as much of "disco rap" that i could. basically any rap that came out between 79 and 83. that was kind of fun and i grew my playlist by like 60 sonngs. i kind of want to keep going to find albums i have missed out on in rap.

im a bit obsessed with rateyourmusic right now. im not sure if i will do reviews but im currently rating the songs on my playlist and plan to at least rate albums. i also am using it to discover music to check out. pretty much pick a year and a genre and listen to anything above a 3 rating or that intrigues me.

>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

99% I listen to my mp3 collection, very rarely I will listen to radio.

I like a playlist but I'm normally too lazy to do one. I typically will have a certain 'mood' of music I into, and will curate as my entire collection plays.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

No. In the past 10 years I've probably listened to five full albums.

>4) How do you discover new music?

TV, radio, movies, music playing around me, occasionally will go researching through youtube or amazon.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth

I listen either my computer or car speakers. I don't currently own a stereo though once I finally move to somewhere more permanent I will get one.

It's funny, I was just recently thinking about my relationship to music and how it's changed. I used to be a lot more into it than I am now, and I think it's because I view it more like art than something personal. Like, I love and appreciate it, but it's a separate entity that flows without input or inclination from me.
13233867, music is everything for me right now
Posted by mista k5, Mon Feb-12-18 01:24 PM
the last few years i think i had a big void because i wasnt really letting it be a part of my life

i didnt have the time to check out new stuff or to spend the time to make playlists. i would just shuffle all the music on my phone and would find out i had a lot of stuff i didnt really care to listen to so i kinda would get stressed.

now that i have a playlist of music i know i like im much happier listening to music and will spend time discovering more music. when i just want to relax or get in a better mood i will just throw my playlist on and its the best therapy right now.

Apple Music with occasional Pandora. I still have a boatload of vinyl and CD's but I stopped buying physical stuff a while ago.

>2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an

Pretty much albums only. I've never been into playlists or just listening to random songs. I use Pandora or Apple Music radio stations in the car when I just want something on but don't really care what, or when I just want a vibe in the background.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

Always. I mostly stay in my "Recently Added" section which is mostly new music, but I fill it in with older favorites.

>4) How do you discover new music?

I don't know. I guess I don't really. I tend to just look out for new stuff from artists I already like. I find stuff via OKP sometimes. I don't actively try and find new shit to listen to.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth

Either desktop speakers at my computer, earbuds, or in the car.

Honestly I feel like I actually listened to music a lot more when I drove to/from work. It was a block of time where I could just sit and listen and didn't have other shit to distract me. I miss that. Now most of my listening happens while I'm doing something else and I don't really fully absorb it.

>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

Primarily I keep my music on my Ipod Classic, and will never give it up until I die (that said, it had been acting wonky so I'll probably end up with a Sony MP3 player of some sort before spring is out). Most of my music is stored on my home server, and is based on a collection of ripped CDs and digital files collected over the years. I still have a large collection of CDs, cassettes, and vinyl (though I do need to hook up my cassette player and get a new turntable)

I have yet to fully embrace streaming, so I'm not on Spoitfy, Tidal, Apple Music, etc. I had signed up with Pandora back when they originally started and will go there from time to time (mainly for QLS these days), and I have used Google Play Music as of late (mainly because it came with YouTube Red and as a way to listen to podcasts). I've got a Soundcloud account, but again, don't use it too much except for the random podcast

This depends on the mood. I had a few playlists back when I had my iPod Photo (it's been a while, I know), but mainly I just keep the
iPod on shuffle, as I have a little bit of everything in my collection.Sometimes I'm in the mood for one artist, and will listen to then on shuffle if I have a few albums from them. Other times I may just want to play an album straight through, so I'll go to that and turn the shuffle off. One of the biggest reasons I stuck with my iPod so long is the whole 'gapless playback', where there's no pause between songs on an album that didn't have them. That more than anything turned me off to a lot of earlier MP3 players, and since the iPod played the album as I was used to on cassette and CD I stuck with it.

When I'm on Google Play Music I will listen to a station or list they have curated, or play my music library at random. It's not that I have anything against playlists (I've got tons of mixtapes I made in my tape bag, so I know very well how to set up a good list), but these days I'm just lazy.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?
Yes, old and new. I really believe the art of making an album is being lost, as more and more music sounds like long ass playlists. A good album is much more cohesive, like a theme is running through it. A good concept album (see Pharaoh Monch or Masta Ace) is extremely hard to do, and you almost have to listen to it straight through to get the story.

>4) How do you discover new music?
By accident. Hear something on XM radio, random suggestion from family or OKP, GPM suggestions, YouTube suggestions, that kind of thing

>
>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth

Commuting to and from work 90 minutes or so a day means I've got a lot of time listening in the car. The ride will rotate between XM radio, terrestrial radio (news and sports, mainly), iPod, and streamed podcasts. If I'm working around the house I usually have my Sony earbuds plugged into the iPod or my phone, depending on what I'm listening to. I would like to invest in a good set of bluetooth buds (especially once I get the Sony Walkman), but I haven't been overly impressed so far. Considering just about every phone is getting rid of the headphone jack, it's either that or buy a lot of dongles. I also have a component system at home that sounds great, but I need to revise a lot in my basement so I can get everything hooked up at once (TV, PS4, LP, etc)

>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

Personal library (MP3's), youtube. I'm avoiding streaming for now but I may join the revolution within a yr. I'm an 'all access' type so I'd pay for the premium stuff. As I can get particular, not sure it's worth it to have an app/service algorithm me taste friendly songs though. But I'm going to try it. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

>2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an

I have various playlist, I cultivate, based on mood, intent, etc.
High energy, kids, dance/edm/house, R&B, Neo-R&B, Artist hits, EP an album with a leak that didn't include songs that made the official release...and when I get bored of the playlist, I delete them and replace. Sometimes I want similar vibes, sometimes I want to be surprised by the order so I'll throw a bunch in a playlist and hit random.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

New releases from artist I'm interested in...yes, I'll digest an album. SOME classic stuff I'll revist (I can listen to D.O.C. No One Can Do It Better any time and never get bored of the ablum). I try not to be the 'back in my day/the 90s were the bestest' dude. My taste has evolved while keeping core tastes as well.

>4) How do you discover new music?

Variety of ways, Youtube, Itunes (yeah I know but Ipods), songs I hear on TV (Commercials, movies, tv shows...I've discovered a few Gems, both old and new just off this), radio (sometimes I'll check in during my commute), websites (OKP, artists sites, datpiff, etc), mixes (no particular DJ's, just anything I happen on where I might hear a new song I like), my kids (they sing stuff I might not have heard of)...I try to absorb from all sources.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth
>speakers? Internal phone speaker?

My studio set up is always my first choice as I'm attentively listening to the entire production there. But my home audio set up (subwoofer, sound bar, surround sound), home assistants, dock stations, headphones (sennheisers) and in the whip give me decent sound for anything I want to hear. I BT or USB connect almost anywhere if I want to listen.

>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

>personal library? Still doing CDs? Cassettes?

Lately (within the last 6 months), I've used streaming as a source to hear new music. Otherwise, I purchase mp3 albums if I'm "craving" a song or album, or just buy the CD off of amazon. I haven't done that in over a year and I miss CD digging. It was therapeutic for me.

>2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an

>you made, where you individually picked out all the songs on
>the playlist? Do you prefer to listen to music in blocks of

>bands, etc or shuffle and mix it up as much as possible?

I listened to a playlist once or twice and it kinda fell off for me. I didn't care enough to want more. The playlist was based off of genre/mood.

If I make a playlist in my iTunes, it's by theme. For example, i have a Soulquarians playlist, New Jersey hip hop, and a few more randoms.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

I do listen to whole albums about 50% of my time. Other times I put my music on shuffle until a song grabs my attention and I start wanting to listen to the album for the overall sound/mood.

>4) How do you discover new music?

Okayplayer, my friend Justin on twitter, and the artists I follow on IG may big up a different artist's new music.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth

I had a Fiio X1 entry level audiophile music player for about 2 years and used it religiously. Then, I broke it in a rage lol so I had to suffer with my iPhone for music. The quality was low and I couldn't put all of my favs on because of the 32GB storage. I have 23k songs/300GB of music.

I exclusively listen through over ear/on ear headphones. I've owned several pairs throughout the years, but now I'm using one of my favorite headphones of all time - JBL Everest 310. I love them more than I loved my Sony MDR V6!

I'd only use buds when my hair was done or if I needed to speak on the phone - using the mic was super convenient. I don't own speakers of any kind, nor a car.

was the rage related to music/the device or it was just what you had near you to break?

The device kept skipping and fast forwarding within the songs. It was glitchy as all hell and I was just done. So I threw it on purpose so it could shatter. :-/

>1) What is your primary source of music? Do you use a

Spotify primarily, Soundcloud to put me on to newer and more obscure stuff. I still buy vinyl which really only gets spun on my home system.

>2) Do you usually listen to playlists? Are they based on an

I mostly listen to playlists. I ONLY listen to playlists I create, never Spotify produced ones. I don't have any artist-based playlist. They are all either based on genre or some other commonality (like, I have a DJ Premier playlist and an Alchemist playlist, etc).

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

As I'm usually listening to playlists, I'm not peeping full albums as much but when I am it's mostly older stuff simply because newer music doesn't have as many quality albums.

>4) How do you discover new music?

I use Spotify and Soundcloud. I listen to almost everything that comes out on SpotifIy's New Releases list. If I find something I like from an artist I haven't heard before, then I even look at the related artists to see if there's new stuff there. I also follow alot of key new music accounts on Soundcloud, so it's easy to find new songs by simply scrolling my Soundcloud timeline. I also follow a lot of music sites and blogs on Twitter so I see stuff there. I have friends that are as into music as I am and put me on to stuff.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and
>earbuds/headphones? Car? Home stereo set up? Bluetooth

My primary set-up is my phone. I have bluetooth earbuds if I'm laying the bed and want to hear music. We have a bluetooth speaker in our bathroom and my stereo receiver in the living room has bluetooth. I have bluetooth audio in my car so having my phone is pretty much all I need. I also keep my laptop next to where I sit at home so I always have that for audio and then sometimes I connect YouTube to the XBox and we peep videos or whatever.
13234091, out of touch or simpy different... i am confused, thats for sure.

i definitely listen to playlist, but nearly all of it is stuff i picked out myself. it mostly depends on mood and i always try to have some sort of story or journey aspect to it.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

even tho i have to admit that the mass of music of there and the various ways of consuming def serve as a distraction

>4) How do you discover new music?

record stores

13234194, Sources/Hardware/etc
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Feb-13-18 11:26 AM

1) On the go or at work, my primary source is streaming through Apple Music: At work I use a pair of DT990 Pro (250ohms) and a Creative SB1240

2) I tend to listen to more albums than playlists, but I do check out the weekly curated PL in the "for you" section and have created a couple of myown.

3) I mainly listen to whole albums, and they're generally older.

4) I discover new artists through AM recommendations or the interwebz

5) At home my primary setup is: Sennheiser HD800s, WooAudio22 Amp, couple different DAC's, Marantz record player. At home I primarily listen to vinyl.

13234241, #1 - Vinyl. YouTube a distant second
Posted by flipnile, Tue Feb-13-18 12:21 PM
No CDs. Still have tapes but no deck to play them.

#2 - No. I pull out a bunch of records and go through them, or listen to the records that I dubbed to digital on my computer.

#3 - Yes. Old music (new to me tho).

#4 - Crate digging. The majority of "old" music is new to me, so...

#5 - Turntable/Mixer/Amp/Speakers (or Sony headphones), or the phone w/ earbuds.
13234246, spotify and soundcloud
Posted by double negative, Tue Feb-13-18 12:28 PM
soundcloud was really amazing with being able to come across new genres as they develop but its changed a bit and I'm finding it a bit harder to come across new stuf

Oh, I also go to specific BBC radio shows like Giles Peterson or Sir Spyro

Don't mess with steaming, not really of fan of that shit, I just listen to a few radio station shows that stream, and once in a while I'll go to soundcloud & bandcamp to hunt & listen to some new shit.

Nope don't do streaming sites, so no playlists or listen to others playlists.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

When I do listen to whole albums, it's usually the ones I've enjoyed over the years, not much new albums are listenable from beginning to end these days.

>4) How do you discover new music?

Thru bandcamp & soundcloud, and once in a while OKP will post an artist I haven't heard from or haven't checked for in a long time.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and

Car, home boom-boxes, turntables, laptop cd drive, etc. the usual.

At work we listen to music all day so usually when I'm home I'm listening to what I like since at work nobody likes to hear clean rap cds, house music, r&b, reggae, or jazz; 90% of the time it's usually rock (old & new), heavy metal (old & new), Johnny Cash, and new wave (which me & one other co-worker like), but that's expected when everyone you work with is white.

I've got an 16o gig iPod that I still use. Actually, I've also got a bootlegged 500 gig iPod that I sometimes use, but I don't have a protective case to go with it, so I only use it on certain occasions. I also still buy CDs and OCCASSIONALLY records.

Yes, I have playlists that I put together on my iPod. Usually multi-aritst based around a time period or region. Last ones I did were producer-based. Come to think of it, I need to start making more of these.

>3) Do you listen to whole albums often? Mostly new or older?

Yes. Almost always. Both new and older.

>4) How do you discover new music?

Here, friends, Bandcamp, browsing a record store.

>5) What's your primary hardware set up for music? Phone and

The iPod and headphones combo at work. Play my iPod through car during my commute and other drives. Have a home stereo set-up that I bought, jeez, almost 20 years ago. Component stereo with a 200-CD changer.

>any other relevant comments/questions welcome

Don't fox with streaming. I like to feel like I have some sort of ownership of the music I'm playing, whether it's through physical copy or I purchased the mp3. Stuff can disappear from streaming media all the time, and other stuff isn't available. I like to have as much obscure variety available to me when I feel it.
