im sure kids were doing plenty of stupid shit back in the day, it just wasnt being broadcasted across the internet

the fact that it's being broadcast on the internet and kids care so much about social media and people made famous by those platforms is significant.

add on to the fact that, in this case, laundry pods went viral 5-10 years ago when these kid parents were freaking out about the safety issues.

Further, the simple act of commenting on something in present-day is in no way "acting like it wasn't present" in the heyday of the commentator.

Also, it's not like they're drinking a glass of water. They're eating laundry detergent as a "challenge". It's extremely out if the ordinary, dangerous, and thus notable. Hence an incredulous response from adults.

The only person in the room "acting" like anything is you, as though what you said made a lick of sense in a vain effort to the the "above it all" guy in the room.

like, I saw this meme channel on Instagram post a hilarious photo of a cheeze pizza that was cooked with laundry pods on top like it was pepperoni, and the thing looked fucking disgusting when it came out, and I thought, "ha, internet does it again."

I only had one friend who was dumb enough to do it but it was fucked up. He would literally put his hands around his neck and cut off the oxygen to his brain until he passed out. I think he even had another kid do it to him. I never thought about how fucked up that is until now. What if he died? You just murdered your friend.

it was never proven to be the cause, but my best friend in middle school - and all my other friends - loved the choke-out game. Like they would just hang out and do it for thirty minutes over and over, developing techniques and one of them even seemed a little hooked on it.

Anyway, he collapsed in the hallway at school getting a drink of water and had suffered an aneurysm that left him in a coma for nearly three weeks. His mom wouldn't let me (or any other white kids) visit in the hospital, but the first place he asked to go when he got out was my house, and he wheeled himself down the street 'cause his mom wouldn't walk him over. he had no memories of me or the things we did together daily for most of our lives, he just felt compelled to come over.

I didn't really see him around much but he's learned how to drive, has a steady job, pays his bills. but his left side is still essentially paralyzed at the joints; he walks but in an awkward way where he basically swings his left leg around the front of his body.

and me personally, as somebody that never participated in the choke-out game but let those guys do it in my parents' basement constantly? I blame it for fucking up my dude's life, for sure.

I did do the electric dog collar thing once or twice, though. I was willing to be that level of stupid.

always seemed like a real bad idea.

we used to do the joint where someone would squat up and down like 10 times or whatever and they you'd bear hug em and they pass out. Stupid shit, but I'd be lying if I said we didn't used to think it was funny.

i remember one kid convulsing while he was out, then he snapped to. we were dumb ass 7th graders, so we just thought it was funny.
i don't know what became of most of them, but i would imagine it could cause some serious damage

i remember thinking i was just gonna fake it before anything actually happened. i came to with a bunch of people looking down on me. my friends trying to hurry me to get up before teachers showed up.

it scared the shit out of me. some kids were doing it all the time

growing up it wasnt a black kids vs white kids thing

groups were mixed in the north and east sides

so I remember doing it with MexicanBlackSamoanCambodian kids

we were smoking weed, drinking and fucking by the time we hit 13 anyway so...it was just a lead up to the real shit.

i grew up around black and white kids... but we never did that choke out game.

maybe they did it without me but most times if someone was getting choked they were losing a fight
