To avoid being transphobic, you have to be willing to have relations with a transgender person? Is that the line now?

13224470, I'm trying to be open minded about that point, but uh....
Posted by double negative, Tue Jan-09-18 11:38 AM
On one hand I want to get upset because it challenges my ideals and I think that I am progressive (going to play the "yes, I have several trans friends" card here) but I am not interested in having a romantic relationship with a trans person and so I am in a loop of thinking "am I a good person or not a good person?"

On the other hand I'm trying to "get it"

But, thats a weird one because as I understand it, the motivation and outlook varies widely from individual to individual. Some trans individuals want to be accepted on all levels as the gender they are presenting while others and the folks who have relationships with them love the middle ground/third gender space some may occupy
13224523, Whether or not you want to have sex with someone shouldn't be the defining

13224434, My problem with this "story" is twofold...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jan-09-18 10:27 AM
1) 5 people saying something crazy isn't newsworthy.
To even report on it at all is a tactic of legitimizing
the insanity.

2) Another specific way this story seems to be seeking
to legitimize a very small minority of insane people is
by not reporting a solid rebuttal to the idea that not
dating a trans woman is akin to not dating a black person.
At the very least, an alleged Black website should point
out how ridiculous that is... but this is what happens
when so-called "Black media" is owned by white folks.
It's not ironic AT ALL that that was the first tweet listed
on the site either.

13224663, if they printed a solid rebuttal then it would end there

13224782, I wouldn't use the word "phobic" but is of course discriminatory
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-10-18 11:03 AM
The same way that if a white person wouldn't date black they are discriminatory. Or if a black person wouldn't date white is discriminatory.

I would just say that in a lot of instances some discrimination is perfectly acceptable. I wouldn't date a dumb chick, I discriminate against dumb people. Society thinks that okay.

I wouldn't date white. I discriminate against white people when it comes to dating. Society thinks that's okay.

If a white person says they wouldn't date a black person, that of course is discriminatory, and I think a lot of society doesn't think that is okay. At the same time a white person could have only dated white people in their life and that might be their preference, and society thinks that okay.

But to say I would not date a trans woman is more than a preference since it's a categorical exclusion and is discriminatory, but I am okay with that and wouldn't try and call it something else.

13224794, It's more than a preference though.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-10-18 11:25 AM
I have a preference for black women. But if I met a bad Asian jawn I would date her. But the same wouldn't go for a white woman for me personally.

I have a preference for black women and I discriminate against white women (with regards to dating).

I think the term discriminate is so loaded that people dont' want to have anything to do with it but sometimes it's accurate and sometimes its acceptable to discriminate.

I see people doing all these acrobats to not admit that it's discrimination but if you say you would never date a certain type of person catergorically that's more than a preference and it's discrimination. but it's okay sometimes.

13224811, People run from the word b/c two definitions are used for it...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Wed Jan-10-18 12:12 PM
1.
recognize a distinction; differentiate.

2.
make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.

According to the above, it can simply be a
distinction, or it can be an unjust distinction.

From what I'm reading in your responses, you're
going with the first one, as there's nothing
inherently "unjust" about a black man preferring
black women.

Thing is, we have to know a person's motives to
determine whether their discrimination is just
or unjust when it comes to dating preferences
concerning race, and it accomplishes next to
nothing to reveal it since ppl can make whatever
choice they want to make in that regard, and that's
usually what the conversation comes down to, even
when you have a black person who only dates white
folks because they hate themselves and their people...
it's not like we can call divine law on this "injustice" lol.

Since it's ok in dating but not in something like
housing, I think definition 1 should be the only
one (as it is on dictionary.com)... even when
you look at a term like "racial discrimination"
(cool in dating but not in housing). In short,
I'm just saying people react strongly to the word,
because they think you're accusing them of an
injustice, essentially.

>I think the term discriminate is so loaded that people dont'
>want to have anything to do with it but sometimes it's
>accurate and sometimes its acceptable to discriminate.
>
13224817, NO. It's not discriminatory.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Jan-10-18 12:28 PM
If I don't want to date trans, or underaged, or hell, older than 45, or men, that doesn't mean I'm legit discriminating against them.

For the last few years there's been a push on social media and articles written about men feeling entitled to sex and attention from women (which we AREN'T that, message does need to be spread)

It's presented as a flaw of male culture, but NOBODY reacts well to being told that someone doesn't find them attractive or engage in romantic activity (Men are more likely to react violently/try to force sex to occur)

13225657, Firebrand made a similar argument that was just as ridiculous
Posted by atruhead, Sat Jan-13-18 02:40 PM
98% sure he was trolling, but he said women who wouldnt date bisexual men are bigots

I dont have statistics and I wont bother looking them up because Im sure Im right, but there are more straight people attracted to the opposite gender than gay/transgender people in the world. the majority of the human population cant be guilty of discrimination for doing what comes natural to them

as for interracial dating, I think that's more of a cultural thing. i.e. someone who grew up around blackness is less likely to stray from that
