13212151, Either this is most punk rock example in trap or I'm late Posted by double negative, Mon Nov-13-17 12:21 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYhXJaEbw7c
fuck it, don't even watch the video. The visuals completely ruin the song.
So I was listening to the rap caviar playlist on spotify just hitting skip song after song and realizing NO ONE is saying anything fresh until I found this song.
I listened to this at least 3 times in a row.
I thought I happened upon some undiscovered gem but I later realized I was late as fuck to this.
Its a crazy mix of shit that oddly really works together and TBH it reminds me of a young black Lil' Ugly Mane.
The angry inflection The way over the top boasting The messy amateur sounding flow The lo-fi and "cheap" sounding beat
If dude didnt have a rap sheet I would think he was joking but he is unfortunately serious as fuck about that life at 17.
I felt like John Cusack in High Fidelity when he finally listened to the demo from the band of kids who were always talking shit to him
9/10 chance this dude burns out quick like all the other one hit rappers

13212173, Based on the video and his crew Posted by Adwhizz, Mon Nov-13-17 12:38 PM
I would have thought he was some lame kid perpetrating(and he still might be, even with whatever charges he caught)
|
13212176, he's implicated pretty thoroughly in 2 murders Posted by dba_BAD, Mon Nov-13-17 12:43 PM
and some other crimes
surveillance footage and all that (allegedly)

13212187, So I have two questions... Posted by double negative, Mon Nov-13-17 12:50 PM
1. is there an uptick of rappers who are tied to criminal activity? It seems like we're seeing this happen a bit more these days - then again...Slick Rick, Snoop & 'Pac
2. Has this topic been explored?
3. Has the topic of art imitating life/life imitating art in hip hop been explored?
|
13212196, I think it's cause it's easier to make songs and put them out there Posted by Adwhizz, Mon Nov-13-17 12:59 PM
due to technology.
Back in the day you would have NEVER heard of this dude because he didn't have a label to put his stuff out there.
There were probably a GANG of would-be rappers back in the day who got locked up before they had a chance to record anything.
Also there's probably more people in general trying to rap now since it's proven to be a lucrative job, so I guess it would make sense more criminals are getting involved.

13212228, yes Posted by bearfield, Mon Nov-13-17 01:58 PM
>1. is there an uptick of rappers who are tied to criminal >activity? It seems like we're seeing this happen a bit more >these days - then again...Slick Rick, Snoop & 'Pac
the bar for making rap songs is extremely low these days (not judging, just stating a fact) and there are a million kids and young adults making beats that they put out for free on YT and SC, and some big name producers are willing to sell top-tier work to enterprising young trappers. bars are hastily strung together over a beat. a eager-to-work videographer is hired and shoots a video in the trap house/complex. video goes up on YT and it gets a few million views. touring commences. merch gets sold. money gets washed. maybe a transition to actual rapping fame happens

13212231, I was in LA this weekend and industry heads were having this convo Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Nov-13-17 02:09 PM
YT has changed the game.

13212167, Hiphop is in an odd, post punk phase right now. Posted by Adwhizz, Mon Nov-13-17 12:35 PM
Like a lot of the rappers popping over the last 10 years would have been been laughing stocks in the 90's/early 00s
There's less of an emphasis on hardcore rhyming and more sing-songy verses that sound like choruses.
It's hard to describe, most music now has sort of grey-ish/blue-ish tint to it.

13212174, Most things sound like Ren & Ten from Brown Sugar at this point Posted by double negative, Mon Nov-13-17 12:40 PM
>Like a lot of the rappers popping over the last 10 years >would have been been laughing stocks in the 90's/early 00s > I totally agree with this, but at the same time, I think the metric has changed and rap fans I assume are checking for some other thing (style?)
>There's less of an emphasis on hardcore rhyming and more >sing-songy verses that sound like choruses. >
Yup

13212183, Not that it's a bad thing Posted by Adwhizz, Mon Nov-13-17 12:47 PM
I think Kanye West made it OK for mainstream rappers to be awkward/nerdy as fuck.

or any of the weird cross over shit from Lazer Sword, Sarah Farina, Machine Drum, etc?

13212209, there are some stark similarities and differences Posted by dba_BAD, Mon Nov-13-17 01:21 PM
similarities being lo fi, lack of musical aspiration or technical mastery etc. plus the anti-establishmentism, even "anti social"ism
key difference being the vanity, boastful, pretty boy, capitalistic shit both in terms of the content as well as the medium
|
13212211, pretty much Posted by double negative, Mon Nov-13-17 01:23 PM

13212210, The DIY feel of it. Its not polished and its raw. Posted by double negative, Mon Nov-13-17 01:21 PM
like the Ramones
it owns everything it is
edit:
there are "low fi" rappers like say Bushwick Zombies, but even they have a level of polish through the grit. This is just rawness on another level
|
13212224, mainly a disregard for tradition + a raw, stripped down sound Posted by bearfield, Mon Nov-13-17 01:51 PM
similar to how the raw, stripped down sound of punk rock was partially a reaction to the insanity of meticulous, over-produced, and operatic 70s rock. replace guitar solos with intricate rap verses and you get "punk" rap like the south florida guys and criminals washing their money (21 savage, nba youngboy, tay-k)

13212219, Punk wise its more Blink 182 than Sex Pisols Posted by Innocent Criminal, Mon Nov-13-17 01:40 PM

13212382, for me, getting old, it'll prolly always be Pill's Trap Goin' Ham Posted by Nodima, Mon Nov-13-17 11:49 PM
with time it's proven to be pretty conventional in terms of sound and fidelity, but man if this video and the content of the song didn't feel like it was challenging everybody me and people like me (white, suburban or midtown rap fans) felt about trap music aside from our knowledge of the real world problems of the Gucci/Jeezy beef.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z42Wxd-_drg
still disappointed what wound up happening with this dude.
