13193786, iPhones aren't a 'techie' thing. They are pretty dumbed-down
Posted by flipnile, Tue Sep-12-17 10:35 AM
Folks that own iPhones don't give shit about technology. Go ahead and randomly ask someone with an iPhone what system they are running, what it's built on or even the specs of their device.

It's like calling someone with a stock Civic or Prius a "car enthusiast"

13193812, A computer that one can actually code on, like a desk/lap top

Something like Raspberry Pi: https://www.raspberrypi.org/

But definitely not an expensive smartphone that doesn't even allow users to directly upload their own music.

The Android phones aren't 'techie' either. No smartphones are.

Loading music on your phone takes up so much space.

13193832, unless you have unlimited data that's a terrible idea
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Sep-12-17 12:02 PM
I use spotify premium..

I just download a few playlist for the road and stream over wifi
13193839, I stream all the time on Sprint's unlimited data
Posted by flipnile, Tue Sep-12-17 12:44 PM
Only thing is the network is janky, so sometimes the stream doesn't load right or you get delays. But yeah, since I'm paying for unlimited I'm on YouTube all the time just to play music.

Second to YouTube, I dub vinyl to .wav files and load them onto an old android phone that has VLC on it.
13193890, if I had unlimited data I would stream more often
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Sep-12-17 02:04 PM
but still, I like the idea of not having to worry about connection speeds, etc when I go offline.

A better car analogy would be Porsche PDK - its still fast, its still a sports car, you can still get that ass in hot water quick but the car will upshift and downshift quicker than you could even think of doing and it can be argued that automating this part of driving makes for a better experience. To that point think of all that technology and development that has gone into the PDK.

Non iphones are more akin to manual sports cars - everything mentioned above is true but you are instead in this case rowing your own gears. You have an added dimension of the driving experience to think about.

I work in tech. I've always tinkered and for me I give zero shits about the limitations of the iPhone. Is it better than everything else? No and not exactly, its just offering up a different user experience - its one where you want things to work with a minimal amount of additional input using a limited set of options. Further, most of the developers I have worked along side through the years use iPhones - I bring this up to counter your point that only non tech people use them.

Wanting a ton more customizable options on an iPhone is like complaining that you can't get the pancakes breakfast at the burger spot when you really wanted to go to the greek diner that has the pancake breakfast AND a burger special on the menu.

13193836, using iOS is more like driving a car w/all the nannies
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Tue Sep-12-17 12:28 PM
i.e. traction control, stability control, etc

Some find those nannies intrusive and limiting while most don't mind because it makes the machine easier to use.

13193841, The comparison to consumer cars is apt. Apple sells a lot of phones

Over 41 million phones in Q3 of this year: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/01/apple-iphone-sales-q3-2017-41-million-iphones-sold.html

Just like Toyota and Honda sells copious amounts of Prius' and Civics.

I'm not saying Apple's hardware or software isn't solid, but it just doesn't appear to give much room to do anything outside of what's Apple-approved. Nothing even remotely interesting about the new features of the phone (unless you REALLY value keeping people from unlocking your phone): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/09/12/iphone-x-everything-know-apples-new-flagship-smartphone/

I'm a C/C++/C#/Python programmer that grew up during the era of building your own 386 computer and mail-order shareware, so admittedly the bar for "techie" is pretty high for me.

just like a lot of folks don't buy a benz for the performance. iphones are like other 'luxury' or high-end items. some folks feel special just from owning them. there's an exclusivity to iphones that android hasn't been able to match yet.

Part of it is that I bought a 7+ outright when it came out less than a year ago. But also, I'm not really excited about it at all. And I'm a tech/gadget whore early adopter type. The iPhone X though, I've already seen all that. In Android phones. 4 years ago. It looks like a very nice phone, don't get me wrong. But I couldn't really care less about getting one right now. More excited about iOS updates. Will probably get the new Apple TV though.

Posted by Kira, Wed Sep-13-17 04:07 PM
The 5.8 inch increase means it's almost unwieldy in one hand and the notch does not blend in with the Apple's well known design aesthetic. Facial recognition doesn't give you the legal protection of a passcode meaning you'll be forced to unlock your phone if required by an authority.

It's a very bad value proposition for the average person as you pay for an advanced front facing camera with portrait lighting, HDR 10 content support, 1 million contrast ratio, neural engine, redesigned touch subsystem, and dramatically increased screen to body ratio. Around the 50 second mark you'll see mention of a redesigned touch subsystem that makes it more responsive to touch gestures:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4wEI5zhHB0&feature=youtu.be

We're talking $1,149 off contract not counting tax. At that point you might as well buy a $329 iPad, get a Skype subscription, get a textplus subscription, and spend $495 a year for data on Straight Talk wireless. AppleCare+ is $200 for the iPhone X vs the standard $129. The actually cost of the 256 gb model counting Applecare is $1349 not counting tax. That's MacBook territory so let that sink in...

The iPhone 8 is worth it for anyone coming from an iPhone SE through the 6S. You get wireless charging, higher max brightness setting, a neural engine for AI, wide color gamut, wide color capture for photos and live photos, four LEDs with true tone flash for image capture, 4K video recording at 60 fps, 1080p video recording vs the 720p on both SE/6S, wireless charging, and fast charging.

I want the 8 personally but refuse to beta test an Apple device at launch. Wait until Christmas, New Year's day, or February to find quality deals for the all the devices. If sales are slow then you'll see incredible deals.
13194313, i'm gonna scoop an SE after Xmas.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Sep-13-17 04:34 PM
maybe a refurbished one at that.

the 8 is just too damn big. i need a phone that'll fit in my front pants pocket. i have a 5 now.
13194317, If you need it get it then but if you wait...
Posted by Kira, Wed Sep-13-17 04:47 PM
... Apple will upgrade the SE around March and by then Gen 2 iSE should see a $50 to $100 price drop. The Xperia XZ Compact is the android equivalent of the iPhone SE so look at that if you want an android device in the same size.

If the phone starts getting unusable pick up a Moto E4 from Wal-Mart for $40 to get you through. The E4 is an entry level basic android smartphone without a compass, NFC, and the rest of the flagship features. It comes with Nougat and won't be updated to Oreo even though it went on sale this year.

Plenty of get you through until you have the bread for an iPhone options exist in Android world...

13194335, I agree with everything you said there except...
Posted by Vertigo, Wed Sep-13-17 07:08 PM
the pondering about if sales will be slow. There is ABSOLUTELY no way sales will be slow. This is apple after all. They could dust off an old 3GS and put an X logo on it, and it'll sell.

The X will sell out for months on end (because they can only produce so many of them from what I read)--and therefore a lot of people will get the 8's--either because of X availability or the redic X pricing as you pointed out. Christmas will be the peak of the hysteria.

All that said, no way I'm copping that X unless a carrier runs a deal so good you couldn't turn it down--but to do that they'd be taking a big loss on the HW, 'cause you know Apple is going to charge them the same for it regardless.
13194775, no, I'm coppin that Note 8
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Sep-15-17 12:07 PM
because I had a Note 7, the S7 Edge I've been using since as the main was a placeholder, and Samsung is giving me over $400 to trade it in.

but as for the iPhone X... an Apple product taking this much risk is ONLY for the early adopters IMO

if I were a long term Apple user I'd cop either an SE, 6-7 (on resale) or a 8.

it's cool though.

13194807, phones too damn expensive, in general
Posted by GROOVEPHI, Fri Sep-15-17 01:45 PM
I remember when all you had to do was be eligible for an upgrade, pay 199 or 299 for the device, and stay with your carrier for 2 more years.
now, all that paying full price shit is ridiculous. We were paying an extra 70/month for 2 iPhone 6's. I swore I wasn't buying another phone unless I HAD to. I've used my phone insurance to replace my phone twice, so I don't have insurance anymore. So, the only way I would get a new iPhone would be if something happened to my phone.
13194809, I'm gonna have this SE forever b

like trying to explain why a phone is the way it is

yeah part of it is marketing, but a lot goes into these things. I mean, Samsung somehow fit a Cintiq in your pocket for under $800 in 2012. Apple jams all this tech in here and then makes it easy on top of it, that's the crazy part.

i get it if you don't need what its offering, but idk what the hand wringing is about.

>hand wringing is about.

We're in a recession with a President and an administration that is pushing for austerity thus forcing our economy to tank while the rich benefit.

$800 is a lot of money when wal-mart has a smartphone for $40. $800 is rent in some places like expensive ass Seattle *gets mad thinking about this high ass rent*. $800 is car. $800 is car payment. $800 is enough money to build a desktop computer or buy a laptop. Technically it costs $975 with taxes for me so it's even worse. This ain't $20 we're talking about here...

Some of it are people that look at android and at the cheaper price. You can buy a used LG G6 and an Xperia X Compact for the price of an iPhone 8 256 Gb with taxes.
13194864, it's not the same thing...
Posted by Vertigo, Fri Sep-15-17 07:03 PM
because no car company has the profit margin of apple. Apple has 80% of the global smartphone profits, despite only having 15% of the market share. Think about that for a second. And they are DOWN...last year they made 92% of the profits with only 20% of the sales.

That's why all the hand wringing--it's not that apple makes a bad product or anything like that, it's that compared to the norm for the industry they are WAY overpriced. (you could argue, the industry norms are unrealistic, but that's a different conversation)

The closest car analogy would be if Tesla charged Bugatti prices for the model S.
13194952, its not overpriced tho.
Posted by tariqhu, Sat Sep-16-17 09:40 PM
its market priced and people keep buying them. the market price hasn't gotten too high for apple to be concerned enough to lower the price. even with android phones selling way more devices, apple is still in great shape.

I really don't think apple wants everyone to buy their devices. if everyone has them, they're not exclusive anymore and lose the luxury aspect.
13194958, Just because people buy them...
Posted by Vertigo, Sun Sep-17-17 06:52 AM
Doesn't mean they aren't overpriced. It just means they know what the market will bear.

Whole Foods sells a lot of food, but it doesn't mean they aren't overpriced relative to other grocery stores.
13212666, if the market can bare it,
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Nov-14-17 07:15 PM
it's not overpriced. the pricing is part of the appeal. its expensive as shit to me, but enough folks see that as one of the reasons to buy them, along with the functionality they provide.
13194867, SMH, my 6s charger port is jacked up
Posted by DJR, Fri Sep-15-17 08:31 PM
It's a 5 minute process to get the charger in just right so that it will charge, and getting worse by the day.

Shits basically becoming an old school landline phone/miniature desktop computer because I don't want to unplug it once I got it so it's actually charging.

I hate buying new phones, but it's time.

All this to say.....maybe. I'll look into the X, that's for sure. If I can get some kind of trade in that knocks a couple hundred off the 8 without them realizing the port is jacked(because, fuck Verizon), then that's probably what I'll go for. But the X is at least going to get a look.

Next year Apple gets rid of Qualcomm so this purchase makes even less sense. I absolutely refuse to get caught in between a battle between Qualcomm and Apple while spending $1349 plus tax.

Negatives:

iOS 11 is the Ice Cream Sandwich of the apple world as it sucks.

NO HEADPHONE JACK

Glass back makes it prone to breaking and god forbid you refuse to drop $200 on AppleCare to get it fixed.

Notch is uglier than shit and not Apple-like at all.

Costs more than a MacBook after tax.

No VR support

Positives:

The device costs $357 to manufacture so Apple gets to the bag every time you buy a device.

Animated emojis.

Arguably the most powerful mobile chipset in any device.

Front facing camera is the best available.

tl;dr If you want this buy it

It's not enough for me as it doesn't meet my spec requirement.
13212836, COPPED. And after two weeks with it, I LOVE it.

People who bought smartphones in the past are finding all kinds of stupid excuses not to get it. But truth be told, this phone delivers on everything Apple said it would.

Period.
