A lot of commentators on the Right had been talking about galvanizing white people in the Midwest for years (which, btw, was one of the big successes of Obama's strategy in 2012).
Hillary's team was counting on circumventing white men by focusing on people of color, especially Latinos, and single/professional white women. That would work without the electoral college, but that's not the system we have, so that strategy was never smart.
