to that man............George. What a voice....
13109120, Wasn't really a fan but his reach, influence, popularity were undeniable
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sun Dec-25-16 08:41 PM
53 is young, too, I know he had some health problems a few years ago but I thought he was doing well and working on some new projects.

Dude was handsome and smooth and kind of had a sexually ambiguous thing going on that was hard to pull off without being very talented.

RIP, I know this is a huge void for a lot of fans. Dude sold over 100 million records? Even more than I thought, wow.
13109121, 2016 can eat a dick

That is all
13109129, fuck, he was a hell of a songwriter

.
13109142, Generally underappreciated for his breadth of talent.
Posted by denny, Sun Dec-25-16 11:01 PM
Multi-instrumentalist and producer too. His public image doesn't reflect this and it can be frustrating hearing how people don't realize all the things he does. Casual observers tend to think of him just as a singer and he was so much more. RIP

I will also say....his reaction to the whole bathroom thing might be the most triumphant 'coming out of the closet' moments in pop history. I was so inspired and in awe of his courage given the context.

Here's the thing about George Michael. He never tried to do too much. He never attained his 'hood pass by hooking up with the popular black producer of the day or recorded with the cool kids to get that ghetto swag (hello, Justin T.). He never pulled a Pink, burying his pure love and devotion for R&B to chase a new pop audience after using black culture as a mere stepping stone. And George always championed the African-American artists that he often publicly obsessed over. Rather than simply cover say Stevie's "Lately" he dug deep for the obscure album cut ("They Won't Go When I Go").

George knew he was part of a soulful tradition regardless of his skin color. And he achieved most of this even before he went solo. Wham's "Careless Whisper" got as much play on black radio stations as some of the quiet storm gems from Luther. "Everything She Wants" became a black karaoke/shower/road trip staple....George was a pop global superstar who was embraced by black folk because WE recognized real. He transcended generic "blue eyed soul" tags. And he did so by continuously challenging himself as an artist (Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1" was miles away from "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"...His stellar songwriting remains slept on.. ). He was loved by all. Rest in power.....

I was always a big Queen fan and when I first heard Wham! I kinda thought it was Queen. anyway, one of my favorite songs ever is Queen's Someone To Love and the live version with George Michael on vocals is another one of my favorite things ever.

guess I'll drop this here too:

13109296, the cat held his own singing with Whitney,Mary J,Beyonce and stevie wonder
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Mon Dec-26-16 11:46 PM
and he was on stage or doing the studio thing in various eras and also on the Motown special back in 85 he was singing on that stage.

cowboys and Angels, or Kissing a Fool he could a torch artist

he could be campy, tongue in cheeck "fast Love" "too funky"

Last Christmas" was tight well composed Holiday song

he was suggestive however not vulgar

or he could assit as he did with Deon Estus "Heaven Help Me"

or his duet with Jody watley.

"carless Whisper" was the money track that sealed the deal.
He never looked back

13109298, He took on the Music business before it was fashionable and got black balled
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Mon Dec-26-16 11:51 PM
he made it acceptable for a Timberlake, and thicke. however he didn't roll like they did, however he made it cool and paid a price.

GM loved Black Music and wanted to respected in R&B as to just pulling a Al Jolson as alot of these cats tend to do.

GM wrote Money tracks and still had balance of the strong material during his peak and Prime.

also GM spoke out against Sony before alot of other artists dare do.
this cat was coming off of two Back to Back Multi Platinum and Hit filled albums
and told these racist record companys what time it was.

Prince, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson tipped there cap to what GM was doing.

he made big money and was cool in his skin and didn't trip on that point.

i go back to the Wham Rap Days when him and Andrew were corny
and just starting out, however "Make it Big" was the business
13109300, Great cover of "If you were there" the Isley Brothers cut
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Mon Dec-26-16 11:52 PM
Wham cut that on there "Make it Big" album and it worked. you knew he was the real deal and had harmony.
13109316, that man had some serious slow jams.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Dec-27-16 09:21 AM
i spent an entire night (and part of a morning) banging the hell out of a guy in the living room of a condo w/a spectacular view of the Chicago skyline. i stayed w/him for as long as i did in large part for 2 reasons: Maxwell's Embrya and the first disc of George Michael's compilation - the one w/the slow jams (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladies_%26_Gentlemen:_The_Best_of_George_Michael). Embrya convinced me to stay and the George Michael convinced me to screw. especially 'A Moment With You'. every time that song came on i was enthralled and i kept wanting to stop and grab the CD cover so i could figure out what the hell that song was. and so i stayed and played long enough to hear that song again (the player was on repeat).

anyway, thanks George for making an otherwise okay lay that much better. oh, and shout out to the Chicago skyline too b/c it definitely played a part.

13109363, i used to think Prince made "Hard Day".
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Dec-27-16 12:37 PM
LOL

i bet Prince would've been pissed to learn that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgWzdzSQA3M

i think it's b/c of the sped up voice he uses at the end. it reminded me of the Camille songs Prince was doing around 1987. plus the relatively sparse sound w/prominent bass and Linn drums...it sounds like som'n from Sign o' the Times.
13109370, RIP

Been listening to only his music since I heard.

Glad to see folks respecting his legacy.

13109385, Reading all the articles...I forgot how BIG Faith was
Posted by cbk, Tue Dec-27-16 01:01 PM
25 million?!??

Number one single AND album of the year.

One of those projects that pleased everyone: fans, critics, and peers (Grammy album of the year).

I can't think of a sexier album.

Iconic videos.

And reading how muting the snare track changed the whole mood of Father Figure(!!!)...

13109386, i want to hear that original 'Father Figure'.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Dec-27-16 01:05 PM
i have imagined a snare on top of the released version and it makes sense that it could be more uptempo w/that addition. but i wanna hear what George had planned instead of the percussion i made up in my head.
13109627, Me too
Posted by cbk, Wed Dec-28-16 11:42 AM
In my head I imagine that big ass snare from Sex. Kinda the same bpm's too! So like a slow, funk jam.
