13054098, HOLY FUCK
Posted by hardware, Fri Aug-05-16 11:43 PM
i just developed my own color film
you dont even know

ordered the kit
i had some film lying around but decided to just shoot up a bunch of it so i could maximize the amount of time i have

finally had enough and got ready. got everything lined up
mixed up the stabalizer
but completely fucked up the blix. i didnt read the pack and mixed the dev with blix B.
so i had to order another kit
shit came today and i was determined. had a shitty day so i needed some meditation time

got everything set again. started mixing blix A but when i was trying to put the pack down so i could use both hands, started spilling the powder all in the sink. :(

but luckily i still had the pack i never got to mix so i started over

start pouring it in, but the spout of my funnel is so long, it dips into the water, wetting the powder and clogging the exit. i had to get a toothpick and try to loosen it up and angle it so it goes into the bottle. it took like 5 minutes but it seemed like 20. finally got it going and the rest of the mixing went smooth-ish

the developing went fine, but apparently my tank is SUPER leaky so i had to stick to agitation

and it worked.
my god.

soo much effort for this.

now i have to decide whether i want to continue my medium format portrait series in B/W or color
13056511, some results
Posted by hardware, Fri Aug-12-16 08:52 AM

Posted by madwriter, Sat Aug-13-16 10:29 AM
color chemicals are really toxic and folks would say not to do it at home. and i mix them at my job since we have an ancient color machine for printing but we don't allow color film developing

Posted by PuertoNico, Sat Aug-13-16 01:18 PM
Been lookin to get into instagram, as i'm only using flickr right now and paying for it!
But it seems like such a struggle to upload the pictures in a nice way: adding a white bar for the right proportions, wanting to work from the computer and not mobile, the pictures are displayed really small and the image quality seems to suffer pretty bad. so how do ya'll approach this ? (talking bout dslr-pics of course)
13057033, You're super overthinking it
Posted by hardware, Sat Aug-13-16 11:31 PM
It depends on whether you're using iOS or Android. If you have Lightroom mobile, Dropbox, or an Eyefi card, it's pretty easy to get them on your phone.

If you go the card route, editing with Snapseed or Lightroom mobile, and VSCO will be enough.

If you insist on working on the desktop since that's where the sausage is usually made, just export it so it's no bigger than 8mb or so so you don't kill your phone.

Instagram no longer forces you image to be a square, but it will appear cropped in you gallery. If you wanna get around that, you can use a photo framing app like SquareSize.

Other than that, use the small size of insta to your advantage. Because of the resolution, you can post those ones that you like that aren't tack sharp enough to print or post full res; no one will be able to tell. This also means you can use it as a space to be a little more relaxed and experimental. It doesn't have to mirror your portfolio. Create material specifically for Instagram, which is probably gonna be less boring.

13063447, #FujiFam // FlashQ Triggers
Posted by hardware, Wed Aug-31-16 09:57 AM
was about to upgrade from Rebel status into the big leagues.

had to shoot an for an event i was supposed to only be doing
all i had was a 400d so i bought a Sigma 17-50 off ebay
managed to come out ok but it was a terrible experience
camera just couldnt cut it
and i didn't even make enough to cover the lens i bought
so i sold all that shit and got crazy deal on a barely used Fuji X-E2

EXTREME upgrade. I played with one when it came out and it was aight.
but with the new firmware, its basically an XT10 in a different body
I'm on vacay next week so i'm probably gonna get out before sunrise and play with it a few days

//

So i also bought a EZ540 speedlite (which ended up being useless). I'd been using it for studio (read: living room) portraits and product stuff on the Bronica and playing with it on my other 35mm and the Pentax Q, but the problem was, i didn't have the money for a trigger.

Has anybody used the FlashQ joints? I looked at some reviews and ordered a set.

Posted by magilla vanilla, Fri Sep-09-16 12:06 PM
Those boards in the foreground steal focus, but if you crop them out, it's a lot stronger, with the man at the "power point" of the frame, and you get more of the scene.

But then, I like to use negative space, as the last image here can attest (NSFW): https://kcampbellshoots.wordpress.com/fine-art/
13066679, i fell in love with those boards. never even thought to remove them.

13066687, a couple camera questions
Posted by double negative, Fri Sep-09-16 12:23 PM
I have a trust 40d which I've had forever.
With it I tend to really like shooting with short prime lenses.
I've found that as much I loved shooting I really really REALLY hated dealing with getting files off the cards.

Now, I do understand that the 40D is an older model and uses the old CF card standard. I found it to be glacially slow when uploading. At this point I tend to shoot and shoot and NEVER EVER edit anything because I hate waiting and hour or two hours to get the goods.

So, for myself I want something that offers up an aps-c or above sized sensor + manual modes + excellent night shooting + fast uploads + comes in a smaller form - I love the way the 40d feels in hand but its pain in the asshole to carry

I'm open to mirrorless/m43/rangefinders/etc

Second thing is potentially wanting to buy a camera for my girlfriend.
She is an instagram addict. Is there a camera out there thats the next step above an iphone that is small in size that offers up quick image sharing via ibeam cards or the like?

13066691, sticking my toe in the DSLR waters... Got a question on a body
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Fri Sep-09-16 12:32 PM
I've been shooting with my bridge cam (Fujitsu S4500) for a while now and I'm about ready to go to DSLR (I used to shoot with an EOS RT I copped for the low at a pawn shop back in '92 and sold in '96).

However...

I ain't about to spend a grip of cash on it. I'm looking at some older bodies to get a bit more "serious" with photography before I decide to go at it hard and buy a new joint. I'm looking at Canon EOS 10D and a few others around $70-$80 on ebay. Any of y'all got suggestions?

does really well in low light. so does d300. nikon d70 if you're not concerned with that. all are old models and are likely low priced but the latter two don't do video, but i think the d300S does. do you have canon lenses still? these models can use / meter old nikon lenses going back decades.

>models can use / meter old nikon lenses going back decades.

I've never really been much for Nikon. In the 80's I had a Pentax then a Canon joint my stepfather gave me. I also had a Kodak point and shoot joint that I actually took most of my best pics with it, just like now with my Kodak C913 point-and-shoot over the Fujitsu joint. I actually still have two 35MM point and shoot cameras from the 90's, one of which still has a roll of film in it I've been meaning to get developed. For that matter... I have probably 5 or 6 disposables I've been meaning to get developed too... Might actually do that next week.

The lenses went with the camera. Figured I wouldn't have much of a use for them anymore once I sold the body, so they went with it.

I don't care much about being able to record video with it, just take decent pictures. Low light might be an issue though, and I think these days I'd be open to Nikon stuff more than years ago as long as the price is right. Also, I'm not caring about resolution as much with it but I think 6MP is gonna be my cut-off.

an old $70 DSLR aint gonna really showcase anything a DSLR can do these days

i vote for a D90 or a t2i or something to test out or check out LensRentals or Borrow Lenses

but i mean, if you shoot more with a P/S and getting what you want, you may wanna just upgrade to one of these CMOS mirrorless joints. Aint really no point in getting a bulky expensive camera you're not gonna use much if you aint making no money off of it. its not much difference other than the crop factor.

unless i'm mis-reading. you looking for features or are you just trying to see if handling a body feels right? if thats the case the i guess get one of those cheap old ones

13066806, ok then..maybe a Canon 20d..its 8 megapixels..goes for around 150 on CL

i'm always afraid to rock the dslr (even if it's a piece of shit) cuz i don't want to draw too much attention.

13107807, I heard the same. nikon dslr
Posted by PinkTaurus, Tue Dec-20-16 01:15 AM
Then I've also read that dslrs arent at risk of being stolen like Iphones are.

The samba school was in the hood. But the folks in there dancing were used to tourists with cameras. Now when we were chilling outside having a beer, the young lady that showed us about the samba school told me to keep it in my bag.

we were there for 10 dys and this was the only place I felt comfortable shooting people with my digital cam and not my camera phone.
13107814, It sucks because Pelourinho is so photographable.
Posted by GOMEZ, Tue Dec-20-16 02:35 AM
Not worth getting stabbed up for though. I had a few run ins already even without the camera to scream tourist to the locals. Street photography opportunities are crazy nice there though. I might get a shitty film camera just to fuck with in the city.

Countryside is more chill though and I didn't stress having the camera there.
13107895, Dang. Sorry that hsppened.
Posted by PinkTaurus, Tue Dec-20-16 10:40 AM
When I was there I didn't want to pull out my dslr at night. The daytime I just felt like a goofy tourist with the thing sometimes. I didn't feel in danger though. It really just depended on my mood and how I felt about my surroundings.
13107796, dope

13125599, I think I want to give my wife a photo shoot for her 40th Birthday
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Feb-15-17 10:30 AM
And I am not talking cheesy kmart photos or mall glamour shoots.

I am talking magazine quality celebrity profile type of shots. I think it could be cool and fun.

I want 30 years from now for my grand kids to see how much of a bad mama jamma their mom was.

Anybody got ideas where I to look for a photographer for something like that in New York who won't break the bank.

Dope idea for a gift too btw!
My wife hates taking photos....she'd climb up on a table, lay down on her side, and glare at me for 10 minutes straight if I laid that sort of gift on her.

making a zine to put out in the summer
working on getting an exhibition in the fall.
13142997, Just copped a new lens. Nothing fancy, a 35mm f1.8
Posted by flipnile, Sun Apr-09-17 04:32 PM
Loving the color saturation and the ability to stop up more than the kit lens for better low light shooting.
13143228, Coming up off the kit lens is like getting a black belt

that's a freakin dangerous thought for the loving camera-owner, talking about taking the camera to the beach or dessert. any of ya'll with some experiences?
Anyways, it all turned out well (taped a lens hood on a zip-up bag) and my recent Morocco-trip was a joy. Some impressions are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/puerto_nico
