he wanted to leave, I was under the impression he wanted to work on different things or just spend more time with his family. I thought everyone was on good terms, which certainly was the case for a time. I remember hub came back and played with them at one of the roots picnics after he left.

one of the roots picnics after he left"

my $.02

I thought when he got sick, that he wasn't able to keep up with their road schedule

that he HAD TO leave, because the Roots stay on the road alot

and he couldn't do both, treatment and tour

I do remember seeing him in Philly after leaving

still gigging, just local.
12964785, yeah, cause like, wasnt he on the cover of Bass magazine right after??

he pretty much said that lifestyle had was getting too hard for him so he bounced. But I always felt bad for him missing the big break. Especially since he was there through all the tough times. Plus he was fucking amazing on the bass.

who everyone said saved all his money and lived a simple life.

but doctor bills can change all that.

always thought he left because he wanted to do something different.

12965460, My dad was very simple and frugal. Multiple Myeloma had other ideas.
Posted by Jon, Fri Jan-29-16 11:23 AM
He was already struggling to make ends meet before the diagnosis, so there's that...but his dedication to simple living and frugal choices was famous among his loved ones...Then 6 years of Multiple Myeloma hit, ultimately taking his life and leaving my mother with astronomical debt.

The so-called "first world" shouldn't be this way.
12965818, Sorry to hear about losing your father and the unfortunate financial debt left behind
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Jan-29-16 10:18 PM

>The so-called "first world" shouldn't be this way.

It really is a shame. My step-mom has Alzhimer's and my dad was weary to put her in a facility which would care for her around the clock because of the financial impact to him and her pension.

People like to make Obamacare about death boards and other crazy stuff, but it's tragic to think that a man or woman can work their whole life for the American Dream to have an illness wipe that wealth away from themselves and their children.

Tragic.
12965858, Appreciate that.

Wow, these are the kind of choices nobody in this world should have to make. Its totally unnecessary. Paying for this stuff should be an afterthought at most.

Yep...the real death boards is when insurance and healthcare CEOs decide how much to charge people for care, who qualifies, and who's shit out of luck. Meanwhile my cousins in France never have to worry about any of this.
12966128, Word. More people than we want to recognize go thru this.

When he left i thought it was because he was tired of being on the road. Then right after that They got the Fallon gig which would have allowed him to not have to travel nearly as much. But Owen was already in the band at that point.

When I heard Owen was leaving I thought for SURE that Hub would come back, so when he didn't I figured there had to be more going on than we knew.
12964916, 3 sides to every story. I hope this all works out for everyone.
Posted by PROMO, Thu Jan-28-16 02:33 PM
i never did dig the Roots music as much when the band started changing members.
12965089, the roots been changing members since day 1 tho
Posted by dba_BAD, Thu Jan-28-16 04:49 PM
don't lump my man in with all that, hub leaving was a bigger deal than the more familiar rotation of players

i also didnt know he was sick, although i had my guesses when he left

if the story is accurate on its face, im just so sorry. i mean im sorry either way
12965094, I thought he left because he was doing church music....

But music deals are always more complicated than they seem.
12965124, It was posted on here when he left....
Posted by TR808, Thu Jan-28-16 06:03 PM
The story was that Hub was tired of touring so he was leaving....

Then shortly after that the Fallon gig popped up.. and all of us thought ok so Hub can come back now because they would be mainly in New York.. but when he didnt come back and started poppin up all over philly then it started looking kinda crazy...

I dont think anything shady went down with the GROUP but when MONEY is involved you never know what can happen....

12965133, 2007 was almost 10 years ago. it's sad he got cancer
Posted by ndibs, Thu Jan-28-16 06:27 PM
but doesn't mean he should necessarily share equally in what they've built 10 years after his departure.
12965135, If that's the agreement it should be honored
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jan-28-16 06:29 PM
if Hub lived up to his part of the agreement, whatever it is.
12965143, i doubt that was the agreement
Posted by ndibs, Thu Jan-28-16 06:44 PM
or else he probably would have sued them years ago.

this seems like a hail mary pass.

i'm sure they'll sort it out in court though.

Posted by ndibs, Fri Jan-29-16 12:14 AM

He's suing quest age bt, bc he feels like questlove and black thought are getting too much.

But the other guys in the band aren't suing quest and bt tho.

12966023, Questlove is the musical director on Fallon. Bt has frequent speaking roles
Posted by ndibs, Sat Jan-30-16 11:33 PM
>now you know how other people feel.

They get checks for being in the band AND their additional roles which go beyond being in the band.

That is why they get paid more and why none of the other guys in the band are suing them.

If you watched the show you'd understand.
12966087, Do you understand that Hub hasnt been a member for a while?
Posted by atruhead, Sun Jan-31-16 12:21 PM

>That is why they get paid more and why none of the other guys
>in the band are suing them.
>
>If you watched the show you'd understand.

This all boils down to contracts.

Some sort of money Hub feels he's owed. Black Thought, Questlove and the rest of the band get money as Jimmy Fallon's employees. I dont know who gets what compared to who. But the other guys in the band have no reason to sue because they're gainfully employed
12965265, I've always hoped Hub would come back.
Posted by Sepia., Fri Jan-29-16 02:37 AM

Definitely looked for him to show up on Fallon.

Posted by atruhead, Sun Jan-31-16 03:10 PM
there's no way to qualify who's a "realer" fan, especially not when dealing with issues like black folks performing for white audiences (Fallon's lead demographic)

unless you're implying white boys get to determine what's "real", which wouldnt shock me at all

my point was white fans arent as taken aback seeing black acts doing anything in the name of success

that doesnt make me any less a fan of the groups music that I love
12966291, huh? that doesnt make a fan fake
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-01-16 09:22 AM

I havent been flagrant in this post

I was quiet until

a) they stopped making music for "us" (someone's exact words from The Roots were "'...and then you shoot your cousin' isnt for yall")

b) this series of articles happened http://www.vulture.com/2014/04/questlove-on-how-hip-hop-failed-black-america.html

combine all of that with whatever happens on Fallon and that's when I started vocalizing my feelings
