12926143, I am finding a lot of people who carry guns are cowards.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Nov-11-15 11:28 AM
I was talking to this dude, cop and ex-military in UTAH (I'll repeat UTAH).

He had a conceal weapon permit and he was telling me he takes his gun everywhere. And he was saying he wouldn't go to such and such a place (I take it the "bad" (maybe even black) part of Utah) without his gun.

And I was just wondering, why are you so scared? A lot of us live and walk through rough neighborhoods all the time without thinking we need guns to successfully travel through such neighborhoods.

Such a weird scared of the world type of way to live IMHOP.

they get all their fear from the news...

when I lived in KY there was a young white girl who said she was a Steeler fan..

I asked if she has ever been to the city and she said she drove past it once fast as shit because she was scared of getting car jacked.

i mean fuck that guy, ya thats what i meant
12927147, Have you ever been off the grid?
Posted by flipnile, Thu Nov-12-15 12:12 PM
I don't mean Central Park or parts of New Jersey, I mean being out in the woods in the mountains of West Virginia camping or something similar. I did, pre-mobile phones and one thing you realize rather quickly is that you are 100% responsible for your own safety out there. No phones, no lights, no paved roads, no bystanders, just nature. If someone runs up on you out there, people may never find out what happened to you. Fall and break your leg and you better walk out the woods through the pain because ain't no ambulance coming.

Anyway, out there a sidearm is a good idea if you're alone 12 miles from the nearest town and there's three random dudes walking towards you. Just saying that there are quite a few instances where carrying a gun makes sense.
12927187, you used being out in the woods alone as your example.
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Nov-12-15 12:40 PM
think about that for a second.

ok.

does that have anything to do with this post or what BuddyG said in his reply?
12927270, exactly

12927282, Utah has a lot of rural areas. Buddy G. used Utah in his example
Posted by flipnile, Thu Nov-12-15 01:42 PM
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/Carte_Utah_population.png

Utah is, overall, a sparsely-populated state. Everything I mentioned about the forest applies to large portions of that state (again, the state that Buddy G mentioned).

>I was talking to this dude, cop and ex-military in UTAH (I'll repeat UTAH).

You seriously don't see the connection, or are you and lfresh just being dense?

Are you also aware that most of the US west of the mississippi river isn't as densely populated as this country's urban centers?

Think about THAT for more than a second.

Have YOU ever been out of urban areas in the US before?
12930920, I can understand *needing* a weapon if you're in the sticks
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Wed Nov-18-15 11:23 AM
The cops could easily be 30+ minutes away and you're going to have to handle a situation by yourself.

Even with vastly more people, I think they're largely unnecessary in urban areas and cause more problems than they could solve.
12927269, yep leaning in this direction

12926305, A middle-aged female customer at a store I worked for told me...
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Wed Nov-11-15 02:10 PM
.. She "believes in killing people " while gesturing towards the
piece in her purse. Up til that point I'd been humoring her small
talk on the way to showing her the aisle containing what she came
there for. She told me she just retired, and how she once prayed for
a dolphin to appear for her grand daughter while they were sailing in
the gulf of Mexico and god answered her prayers... The whole time I
was looking at her like o_O Then she dropped the killing opinion and
I basically pointed her in the direction she needed to go and booked
it back to my register.
12926322, would she believe in killing people if she had to do it without a gun?
Posted by BigJazz, Wed Nov-11-15 02:22 PM
pullin a trigger is one thing.

but to stab a person?

or choke them?

or beat them to death?

whole different ball game...

12926362, Probably not I'd wager.
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Wed Nov-11-15 02:44 PM
I've had to carry/use weapons (non-firearms) in the past. Never did my
thought process involve possibly killing someone even at my most
scared/angered point. I don't get people who have seemingly
nonchalant attitudes about guns like they're just any other weapon...

but a. she's been in several life or death situations
and has had to fight for her life in the country and in cities

she's 5ft (now she's 4"11)

she'll use a gun and whatever else
but she doesn't threaten people unnecessarily

but it escalates quickly if she feels you are inappropriate
for example
flashers on the train
she's taken out knifes and "cleaned" her fingernails
or does the sawing off motion to those dudes

12926392, Overreaction, but you don't approach strangers in a parking lot
Posted by J_Stew, Wed Nov-11-15 03:00 PM
People do shit all the time that they don't understand can rightfully generate fear in the other person. If someone is walking and you pull up on them to ask for directions, how in the world does that person know that you mean them no harm? Asking for a light, asking for the time, these are good ways to initiate an encounter that enables the attacker to get into the victims personal space.

If you're against street hollers and how they make a woman feel in danger, you should also be conscious of other situations that could be a precursor to an attack. Because, you know, no one ever got raped or robbed in a parking lot!
12926718, Well.....
Posted by quikfit, Wed Nov-11-15 11:58 PM
This was in the middle of the day, with lots of people around, and they didn't get within 10 feet, and this woman was more scared then she'd been in her ENTIRE LIFE? She's 67.
I don't smoke, and even I'd say it's fair to ask someone for a light in a parking lot from 10 feet away and not have a pistol pulled on you as you RUN AWAY.
She's talking about "how are we supposed to defend ourselves?" From what? That's just a yes/no question. She yelled she was going to kill them!
12926725, I said she overreacted, but a lot of the commentary
Posted by J_Stew, Thu Nov-12-15 12:15 AM
about how someone "just did _____" in a dismissive way are also things people do as a distraction before attack someone. I'm obviously not advocating being paranoid or trigger happy, but there have been countless people in similar situations where they were oblivious to possible pre-contact cues and paid for it.
12927277, okay agreed
Posted by lfresh, Thu Nov-12-15 01:40 PM
people truly don't seem to understand that the atm machine
at the cash register
while i'm digging in my bag

NOT a good time to be asking me about for for anything
i'm straight up hostile
i wouldn't be flashing guns at anyone
but i'm not nice in those situations

doesn't make her actions right, but this society is fucking people's heads up -- to the extent that it's hard to not at least speak to it.
12927154, Wasn't "self-defense," it was "brandishing"
Posted by flipnile, Thu Nov-12-15 12:15 PM
Self-defense would imply that she was being attacked. Rather, she brandished her firearm at someone.
