I get it if the job is top level and you are dealing with money

buuuuut its crazy that a dark period in ones life could make it so you dont get the job

in 2009 43% of companies were checking applicants credit scores

Poll question: Is it fair or right that potential employers use your credit score as a metric?

12919386, both. Just like everything else they use its fair game imo but it doesn't

show the whole picture.

I think its would unfair to use that as a sole reason not to hire or give someone an interview...but if you got two identical candidates and one got a 420 score...um, bye Watermelondrea

12919387, it's more fair than using race or physical or appearance
Posted by ndibs, Fri Oct-30-15 02:54 PM
on the scale of things that people use and the scale of things that people actually have within their control it's fairly fair.
12919394, even though it may correlate with some of those other attributes?
Posted by MiracleRic, Fri Oct-30-15 03:00 PM
12919398, well, it can correllate or watermelondria may have an 850
Posted by ndibs, Fri Oct-30-15 03:03 PM
so it may help those who may otherwise not have a chance.

i got turned down for an apartment, where the landlord was talking about how he had all these tenants that weren't paying rent, but they never checked my credit score.
12919400, yay for helping only a minority of a minority

12919405, I think it's stupid when jobs that don't deal with money....
Posted by The Wordsmith, Fri Oct-30-15 03:17 PM
....or anything of high monetary value that can easily be pawned somewhere require it.

EDIT: And even with the aforementioned, having a low score doesn't mean a person is gonna be tempted to steal or that they're fiscally irresponsible.

12919410, got a credit report question:
Posted by SooperEgo, Fri Oct-30-15 03:27 PM
incorrect stuff is supposed to be removed from your credit report.

but do you have any recourse for stuff that you know is legit that you still want to get off?

i been looking up pay for delete but from what i'm seeing it either no longer exists or never really did.

are credit card companies agreeing to remove perfectly legitimate items just because the deadbeat decided they were ready to pay?
12919442, There's no consistent rule for that. So it makes sense to try.
Posted by soulfunk, Fri Oct-30-15 04:07 PM
In other words offer a creditor that you will pay something off if they agree to remove the negative reporting item. Some will, some won't.

When it comes to collections you can negotiate how much you will pay to have them remove it as an active collection, but if you pay less than the full balance it will be still reported as a closed collection account that was paid off for less than the balance.

You can also dispute anything on your report, legitimate or not directly with the three credit bureaus. The creditor has 30 days to prove that the account is legit, and if they don't then the bureaus will remove it. Some collection agencies are slow with responses to disputes so they will miss the boat, and it gets taken off of your credit. Worth trying.
12919419, credit has no bearing on whether you can perform well

It shouldn't be used at all, same for criminal background checks (though I can see a handful of exceptions for that one).

They don't want to call for peace then.
12919436, doesn't show anything at all

Someone with shitty judgement and money skills can have excellent credit if they have someone willing to bail them out. Someone else may just have had a rough period financially. I know I had to explain some credit issues during a background check for my last job. It was humiliating.
12919444, NY just banned the practice I think.
