This plus "Another Victory" back-to-back is one of the illest 1-2 punches on any album ever.

Was "Mortal Combat" aimed at someone specifically?

Probably my favorite ever. So many great lines in this track. Just listened to it today actually.

"Chris Tucker ain't around, it's your Friday, it was good
I wasn't salty she was with them boyz n the hood"

I mean...dude.

"And the circle mad/MAAD, ain't got no choice but to fight
ain't none'a y'all mothafuckas got a chance on the mic"

Just wiped out the whole crew easy with one line.

Man I loved this era of Common. Like, 96-99 he was just on another level.

Largely unknown because it was a b-side for the group's second album. and it was about Hammer, who no one cared about anymore. But it's an epic takedown; they took it places that Bay Area cats would appreciate.

Pac barely said anything/his verse was like 26 seconds. The Outlawz are terrible. At this point I hate the beat and as soon as it comes on anywhere I try and change it.

May be a personal thing but I just never understood the hype around it.
12867692, it gets by on "I fucked your wife"

and his shit talking at the end
and just Pac's passion when he spits

but you're right that it suffers from the Outlawz verses which are just boring and forgettable.

i think it's a bit overrated, but seeing people champion that neck rolling passive-aggressive sing-along drake diss in that other post ("ooh he went IN!") makes me long for Hit 'em Up

Especially the end. Naturally it looks amazing next to what passes for "battle rap" now but ... still, in the pantheon of the great 80s 90s and early 00s diss tracks, Hit Em Up is near bottom for me. Seriously.

But yea - like you said, he gets by on his passion for this track. And honestly I think that's how his *career* gets by, other than the martyr thing. I mean I love Pac, I really do. But lyrically he's nowhere near where people used to place him for the years immediately proceeding his death.

And I can agree with those who criticize the quality of his targets, but he had a battle mentality for obvious reasons, and was probably better at the art of dissing people than anyone lyrically. He did what Nas did with Ether every time out and really drove into the person's soul. Took any possible negative about that person's career and ripped it apart. I do wish he had gone after at least *one* worthy opponent, but he always had a thing about saying anything negative about legends, which would pretty much cut out any of his contemporaries on the mic. But anyway:

Nail in the Coffin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc_hziEFBfs

"Vanilla Ice, spill the beans and rice
I'm eatin' you alive inside, Jesus Christ
if you're that much of a gangsta, put the mic down!
you should be out killin' mothafuckas right now!"

"You're a fuckin' joke
if you was really sellin' coke,
well then what the fuck you stop for, dummy?
if you slew some crack, you'd make a lot more money
than you do from rap"

Then that ending...ruthless.

"here, lemme slow it down for you, so that you can understand if I say it slower:
Let it go dogg, it's over"

The Sauce
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_cQ_IZxDHY

"No more Source for street cred, them days is dead
Ray's got AKs to Dave Mays' head
every issue there's an eight page Made Men's spread
would somebody PLEASE tell whoever braids his head..."

That "braids" line always cracked me up.

"No wonder you're sore now
lord, or you're bored now
I'm pushin' 30, you're kickin' 40's door down"

Then literally the entirety of the last part from "But you know that you'll always see me, on your TV..." is just fucking insanity. My god does he rip that up.

I Remember
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS1WUXXp6GY

Man he even got at Mariah and Nick Cannon hilariously on that The Warning track he did in like 2009 or whenever it was.

Like I said, say what you will about his choice of targets but for my money no one made me laugh more than this dude on diss tracks.

Though I thought it was corny how he'd diss boy bands or moby, just to do it.

But he rarely hesitated to just annihilate anyone who dissed him. I wish his main albums were even half as good as the stuff he did off of them. Some of it's amazing.

I actually meant to say that while I understand people criticizing him because of his targets, he really only attacked people who came at him first. Just so happened they were shitshows like Benzino and Everlast. Haha.

But yea - the pop figures he went after, those were mostly uncalled for. Though Moby came at Em first I think, in an interview, so it's similar to Benzino/Everlast. Just disrespect. Plus it birthed the "nobody listens to techno" line which still cracks me up to this day even if it turned out to be incorrect years later.

Go To Sleep was my jam... fucking reckless.

That Hail Mary cover was something too...

You ain't no killer, you a pussy
That Ecstasy done got you all emotional and mushy
Bitches wearing rags in photos, Ja's words being quoted
In The Source, stealing Pac's shit like he just wrote it
You loud mouths pray to god hoping no one's listening
See 50 coming for me, Oh my god ma, my position
No one will pay attention to me
Please Gotti, here I go, give me this pill
Ecstasy done got me feeling so invincible
Now all of a sudden I'm a fucking madman who screams
Like I'm Pac but I'm not, enemies, Hennessey
Acting like I'm great, but I'm fake, I'm crazy
Sweat drip, get me off this trip, someone stop this train
Some say my brain is all corrupted, fucked from this shit
I'm stuck, I'm addicted to these drugs, I'mma quit
Saying motherfuckers names before somebody fucks me up
Ain't no pussies over here, partner, see you in hell, fucker

Then 50 comes in with guns BLAZING:

Lil' nigga named Ja think he live like me
Talking 'bout he left the hospital, took 9 like me
You live in fantasies nigga, I reject your deposit
When your lil' sweet ass gon' come out of the closet?
Now he wondering why DMX blowed him out
Next time grown folks talking bitch, close your mouth
Peep me, I take this war shit deeply
Done seen too many real niggas ball to let these bitch niggas beat me
Black, you's a motherfucking punk and you can see me with gloves
Quit scaring them fucking kids with your ugly ass mug
And you can tell them niggas you roll with whatever you want
But you and I know what's going on
Nigga payback, Tah, I know your bitch ass from way back
Witnessed me strapped with Macs, you know I don’t play that
All these old rappers trying to advance
It's all over now, take it like a man
Irv looking like Larry Holmes, flabby and sick
Trying to playa hate on my shit, man eat a fat dick
Loving this shit that's how you made me
Feeling like I got you niggas crazy
Against all odds, hoping my thug motherfuckers know
This be the realest shit I ever wrote
Against all odds, up in the studio getting blow
To the truest shit I ever spoke
21 gun salute

You think it's gotta be done, but then BUSTA goes fucking dumb:

I've been one of the most humble, rep the streets to the core
Hey JEFFREY, what the fuck you come involving me for
It's been a long time coming, like a bless and a check
You see 106 and Park fans don't even fucking respect you
It's kinda funny, wannabe Pac, wanna fake like you thug
Running around talking shit that he ain't capable of
Now let me off this cocksucker whilst we handle you, nigga
If I recall, Violator use to manage you, nigga
Then took a closer look and realized you was an impostor
There's never been a Violator on a Murda Inc roster
Dumb ass, now who's shooting?
Ah made you look
You said Bus singing the same old hook, you stupid
If y'all shooting
I take a look at your man, the bitch shot himself in front of Def Jam
CHEDDAR BOB ASS N***A start adjusting your plan
You let the streets down n***a, 'pologize to your fans
Watch you pull a little stunt like we ain't know what it was
Little faggot desperate trying to re-establish a buzz
I know the shit is driving you crazy, you wondering how
The streets ain't never want you BEATRICE, what you gonna do now
Now if you wanna beef with me, then I'm beefing with you
I think about the game and what it's like and what would it be without you
I'm finished, I ain't trying to repeat this

12867759, I used to fuck with my L.A.homies all the time over that track
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jul-30-15 02:35 PM
Back in Summer of '95, when the song dropped, I was working at a Blockbuster in Oakland. One of my main homies who also worked there was this serious g-shit from LA, and he kept on insisting that the song was wack. So every time I'd see during a shift, I'd say, "For your nation... Yeah.... For your nation... Yeah..." And he'd get pissed and say, "Fuck that. That shit sucks."

Then I went back to school, and the L.A. born and raised co-host for my radio show would try to pop the same shit and big up "West Coast Slaughterhouse." Nope.
12867957, I had never heard of it until about 3 years after it came out.
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Jul-30-15 05:01 PM
When some guy we knew from Atlanta brought it up in a conversation how Common Sense destroyed Cube on this track. I remember the lines on the WSC album but never knew the backstory. I still don't think I actually heard it until 99 or so

It's a great diss track, but it's weird to me when people to credit it with having any kind of real effect on Cube's career I'm sure it stung, but it was pretty off the radar for most people I knew.
12868081, See, I also heard it YEAAAAAAAAAAAAARS later.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jul-30-15 07:19 PM
They NEVER, never ever ever EVER ever (c) Smokey, played it on L.A. radio, not once. But as said above by Mr Hood, the radio was trying to prop up Westside Slaughterhouse. And I remember Cube on the Westside Connection album remix of "Hoo-bangin" saying "I'm bombin, on Common Sense! Chicago is mine, nigga hit the fence!" and I thought that was hard bc he sounded hype saying it.

But yeah. When I heard it, it was too late to really make impact on me regarding Cube, but I can see it being vicious, especially for a rapper such as Common. I know he said he feared for his life after making it.
12868189, Yup. practically no on had heard that shit
